"Fans pick tracks for Robert's gigs"

FRENCH musician
Robert Lauri values
his fans so much that
he wants them to
become involved in the
production of his
music, writes Simon
Yaffe.
The 53-year-old is
asking them to choose
their favourite Lauri
songs through his
website as part of the
Concert à la Carte.
Robert was born to
Algerian Jewish
parents who emigrated
to France just after
the Second World War,
as Algerian
nationalists sought
independence for their
country.
He recalled: “We
were not a religious
family, I would say
more of a traditional
one. We kept the major
festivals.”
He describes his
latest album, The
Other Side of Robert
Lauri, as taking his
music in a completely
new direction.
Robert said: “Each
title of the album
takes the listener to
another world.
“There are lots of
instrumental
arrangements that
convey sensitivity and
emotion.”
Two songs from the
album, Hong Kong Café
and Houston Day, were
released this week.
Robert’s career
started when he moved
to London in the late
1970s, where he worked
for Elton John’s
publishing company,
Dick James Music.
It was the music
company which put
out his first album
and, in the following
years, he put out 12
more, working with
the likes of Elton
John, Bob Dylan and
Donna Summer as well
as writing an album
for Starsky and Hutch
star David Soul.
Many French Jews
have emigrated to
Israel over the past 10
years and Robert said
antisemitism is a
problem in the Fifth
Republic.
He explained: “My
three children have
suffered verbal abuse
in Paris. It is difficult
for them.
“It is not easy being
Jewish in France.”
Up until 1989, he had
never written or
recorded any songs
with a spiritual
element.
But that all changed
one night when, he
claimed, his recently
deceased mother came
to him in a dream and
told him that he
should sing songs for
God.
He then began a
mystical phase and
formed the band Alef,
in 1989, whose songs
consisted of hardhitting,
topical
arrangements with
texts from the Torah.
Robert, who plays
the piano and guitar,
said: “My family has
always been artistic
and one of my older
brothers was in a
famous French band in
the 1960s called Black
Sock.” - Jewish Telegraph Manchester

A découvrir. - ANNY DIMELOW <anny.dimelow@chello.be>

Chantal Allon, Claudine Maroussek ,D. Barbelivien, JP.Dreau,, E. Rodagyl.

"Listen to Liberté"

Listen to LIBERTE

If you haven’t figured it out, yet, most of the VDT View music reviews focus on music you may have otherwise not heard of. Not all of it, but definitely the majority of it. There’s a couple reasons for this: One, everybody knows that Metallica, for example, has released a new album, and almost everybody has something to say or write about it. That doesn’t mean we may not have something to say about “Death Magnetic,” but, if we don’t, it doesn’t mean you won’t hear it and about it from hundreds of other outlets. Two, people send VDT View e-mails touting some new album; we ask them for a review copy, no matter who it is, and if they send it, we review it. Robert Lauri’s “Liberte” is a case in point. I had never heard of Lauri prior to receiving an e-mail about his latest music, but have come to learn that he is a French musician, well known in France, who brings something of a Philip Glass-like composer’s reach to his disco-pop-rap jives. He sings in his native French, in a riveting voice. For “Liberte,” he sings while an earnest female voice translates the words into English, which doesn’t quite meet the desired effect of deep thoughts on the contradictions of liberty, but rather comes across as so serious, it is almost anything but. Yet, the package that contained “Liberte” included Lauri’s “Tant s’aimer tant se hair,” which is a truly mesmerizing piece of music, powerful, challenging, and, unless you understand French, its words will remain a mystery. But that’s OK, you don’t have to understand the words to appreciate Lauri’s voice on this CD.

2009 :
2009, a new album will be released by Autumn : The Other Side of Robert Lauri An array of innovative melodies drifting over various continents and cultures. Each title releases its own emotional force and takes us into “another world”, where atmospheres are created by remarkable instrumental arrangements of astonishing chords that are ideal for conveying emotion and sensitivity. Robert Lauri makes us discover the range and diversity of the creative force of a tunesmith who deserves to be discovered by the general public. Robert Lauri offers us strong and astonishing musical atmospheres. Each title takes us into another musical world with various musical genres and rhythms, such as country, meditative, and classical styles mixed with pop, electro pop, soul, and so on and so forth. Certain melodies also evoke some captivating pieces of film music; others open up a haven of peace and meditation. Still others invite us to move. But even if the compositions float in their own magic, a common theme is guiding the weft of these creations: dream and relaxation. When listening to the instrumentals, you leave the ground to glide in your own world of emotions and imagination. A first extract from the album offers the public two titles (Hong Kong Café and Houston Day). The single is available at all the main sales sites in the world. In 2009, the artiste launched his MyConcert2009 programme (Concert à la Carte), which also contains a part allowing the public to participate in the production, and some sponsorship.

About Robert Lauri
Ambitious, without being career-minded, Robert Lauri blends his life and work.

Born into a family of musicians and artists, it was almost inevitable that Robert Lauri would become involved in the arts in some way. As a young boy he learned to play piano and guitar. Not content with just performing, Robert was soon composing great melodies to accompany his lyrics. Throughout his career, Robert Lauri has always been an original, remaining true to himself and his creative drive, unfettered by the ebb and flow of fads and fashion.

In 1976, a number of top names worked with him on his first album.

Published by Dick James Music, Elton John’s publisher, produced by Mitchel Hiller and Kay Kaplan, arranged by Robin Miller, this LP was recorded at the Olympic studio in London and distributed in Britain and Italy.

Back in France, Robert Lauri signed with WEA Filipachi in 1980.

A very fine album came out of his work with JP Bourtayre, B. de Bosson and D. Rousseau. The lead song, Je jure, marched up the hit parades and soared quickly to number one, where it stayed for several weeks. Chantal Allon,Claudine Marousek-Dornhakl, D. Barbelivien, J-P Dreau, E. Rodagyl, other writers also worked with him on other hits.

Some years ago, Robert Lauri began a mystical phase and created the band ALEF.

This was an original concept that consisted of mixing hard-hitting, topical arrangements with texts from the Torah. Success was immediate on the airwaves.

Some great performance venues, such as L’Olympia, Le Zénith, Le Palais des Congrès and others staged their concerts in front of enthusiastic audiences.

After winning over audiences in Europe, ALEF conquered Canada and the United States, where their gigs included an appearance on the US Telethon.

In parallel to all this, he continued to write music and lyrics for numerous other bands and individual performers.

1998 saw Robert Lauri return to his first love. Composing country tunes produced songs touching on sensitive areas in a changing society at the dawn of a new millennium. For the artist, the year 2008 has been marked by the realization of several substantial projects. During the past year, Robert Lauri has recorded and released four albums. The album “Liberty” has been recorded in Paris and New York. Two capitals whose cultural richness and musical diversity permeate this new album.
