The best kept secret in music

Boom & Birds: an acoustica / hip hop / inverted folk hybrid that startles with its originality and summertime breeze. Roberto Carlos fills the fatbacked rhythms with melodic elements, processed guitars and intricate shimmers, aided and abetted by Adam Heathcott. 'Sometimes too lucky' maintains this connection to 'real' instruments - a lonesome guitar rides a rich bed of vibes, like an after hours jam led by the Compass point All Stars. 'Serpent Regular' opens with a Sun Ra-ish moment, then again the stringed instruments come into focus, offering a reflective, cannily poised composition, a song. 'Yellow Kite' has to be the highlight here, like a long lost Tom Tom Club dub, out and out balearic heaven. The vinyl version also comes complete with a killer remix from Botanica Del Jibaro's latest signings Climber - making waves and for all the right reasons. This is a peach of a release, and shows the forefront of Miami music reaching out into new areas - right in the midst of the uk leg of their european tour - its just great to hear something so genuine and original. Really excellent stuff, and suffice to say - great packaging every time. Killer. -

Feeling a bit camera shy

Sonic beds of minimal and curious electronic layers lead by guitar, Arp synthesizer melodies and vibraphone arpeggiations. Musical influences include South American 60's & 70's rock, Sun Ra, Cluster, BDP, Gabor Szabo and Brian Eno. Breaking free of the typical band idea, Boom & Birds collaborates with a new artist each record. The idea is to let go of any comfort and let the musician's relationship create a musical dialogue. Boom & Birds has been featured at the 2004 Sonar Advanced Music and Arts Festival with the rest of Beta Bodega Coailtion in Barcelona, Spain, the anti-Winter Music Conference Infiltrate and a live improvisational performance for a motion painting by David Ellis.
