To Save My Soul

Written By: Robert Sokol

TO SAVE MY SOUL

Hard, hard faces
Smiles have all dropped away
Hard times comin’
Dues I’ve yet to pay
Hard, hard voices, icy cold
Hear them say:

Go have your blues, child
But go have them away
Go have your blues, little child
But go have them away
‘Cause you know them blues is catchin’
And you know, yeah, you know
I just can’t stay

Soft, soft fingers
Once they softened up the night
Soft, soft lovin’
Now love’s bark turned into bite
Soft, soft people
turnin’ hard, turnin’ hard, turnin’ hard
And turnin’ out the light

Go have your blues, child
Have them this very day
Go have your blues, little child
Else they’ll never go away
Cause them nighttime blues is catchin’
And you know, even for you
I just can’t stay

Hard, hard darkness
Just can’t chase away that cold
Hard luck stories —
seems like all of them been told
Such a hard, hard time, Lord
When you’re tryin’ to save your soul

Go have your blues, child
It’s the only way
go have your blues, little child
Let them chase theirselves away
And if I find them blues is catchin’
Well, you know, yeah, you know
I just might stay

Hard, hard darkness, hard, hard darkness,
hard, hard darkness
Just can’t chase away that cold
Hard luck stories —
seems like all of them been told
Such a hard, hard time, Lord
When you’re tryin’ to save your soul

Such a hard, hard, hard, hard time
Tryin’ to save it all…
A hard, hard, hard, hard time
Tryin’ to save it all…
A hard, hard, hard, hard time
Tryin’ to save it all alone.

Let It Fly

LET IT FLY

The sky is blue, there ain’t a patch of gray
Weatherman says it’s goin’ to rain today
But my corns ain’t tingling, ain’t a creak in my knee
Birds ain’t makin’ a raucous in the tree
So I go for a ride in my convertible car
And when I’m bailin’ out water like from a reservoir
I sigh, let it fly
me, oh, my, let it fly

Today I’m soakin’, tomorrow I’ll fry
The ground’ll parch, all my plants’ll die
But the sight of that lady raisin’ dust on the road
Brings a knot to my stomach and a lump to my throat
And tho the sun’s blazin’ white in the noontime sky
we both feel the joy of clingin’ where we lie
I sigh, let it fly
me, oh, my, let fly

Good God, it’s no lie, if you just let it fly
A laugh’s a great high, but so’s a good cry
Crack your face with a smile
Crack your soul with a cry
Let your woes fly on by
I sigh, let it fly
Me, oh, my, let it fly

Angels can do it, so can crows in the sky
balloons and buffoons with cloth wings soarin’ high
When the gray years approach me and they say to lay down
I’ll chase ‘em off with a swipe and then go paint the town
And when me and this world got to say our goodbye
I’m gonna raise my eyes skyward, say, “God, let it fly.”
It’s too far to walk, it’s up so damn high
I sigh, let it fly
Me, oh, my, let it fly
let me fly
