Biography

By the age of 17, Rob Montone was already a veteran, having written songs and played in bands since he was 12. But it wasn’t until his years in the college town of Scranton, Pennsylvania that he came into his own. By the end of his first year, he had already earned a loyal following of fans, drawn to the coffee houses and open mic nights to hear Rob’s folk-based repertoire of heartbreaking ballads, ethereal instrumentals and amazing guitar picking.

Classmates memorized his songs, called out requests at Friday night happy hours and impromptu outdoor jams, and took the memories with them. Rob’s music was like the soundtrack behind their college experience.

Through word of mouth, the circle of Rob Montone fans has continued to spread ever wider, through the neighborhoods of Buffalo (home to another independent singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco) and well beyond.

A wider audience surely deserves the pleasure of hearing the music of Rob Montone…

Sunshine

Written By: Rob Montone

Sunshine
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

The sunshine is breaking through the clouds today
An old friend who wants to come out to play
And I smile…

Green grass laughs at the snow that’s gone away
It feels good to know that summer’s on the way
And I laugh…

Look out – I think I see a thunderstorm
Coming up over the hills
Can’t trust the safety of the norm
It never will last – never will fulfill…

But the sunshine is breaking through the clouds today
An old friend who’s never seen the darkness stay
And I sigh…

Ways of Nature

Ways of Nature
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

Did you ever look into a river –
See the motion and the cloudless sky?
Did you ever feel the joys of living –
Feel the sorrows and then wonder why?

Did you ever listen to the lyrics
Of a song that played a different tune?
So it is in the ways of Nature –
A lesson difficult to learn

It is a mystery
And it’s beautiful
It is a tragedy
But it suits me well…

Everyday the sunlight says “good morning”
Every evening, moonlight says “good night”
Ever airplane in the clear sky, soaring
Imitates the eagle’s gift of flight

It is a mystery
And it’s beautiful
It is a tragedy
But it suits me well…

Southern Star

Southern Star
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

I met a girl some years ago –
Sweetest girl I’d ever seen
To this day there hasn’t been one as
Beautiful as she

We shared the seasons one fine year-
A blossoming of hearts.
We sang and danced in youth’s romance-
A complicated art.

Then it went as fast as it had come
And left behind the scar
Of a love that was and still could be
If she were not as far
As the faintest southern star.

Now as the waves do kiss the shore
And move back out the same
This ocean never changes
It’s just a lonely game

I know one day our paths will cross
And our love will be
Just like the separate streams of time that
Always reach the sea.

But it went as fast as it had come
And left behind the scar
Of a love that was and still could be
If she were not as far
As the faintest southern star.

Brown Eyes

Brown Eyes
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

My little brown-eyed girl you
Seem so far away you’re
Always on my mind I miss you
My brown eyes.

My little brown-eyed girl I
Miss the way you sing my songs I miss
The way you made me love you –
I love you.

But now you’re far away and I only see you in my dreams
You seem so far away
I dream of you at night I know I’ll never see you here
You live so far away

My little brown-eyed girl I’d
Love to hold you close to me I’d love
To be with you, my baby –
My brown eyes.

But now you’re far away and I only see you in my dreams
You seem so far away
I dream of you at night I know I’ll never see you here
You live so far away
Dreams of you are golden where I lay
I miss you like the night misses the day
Dreams of you are golden where I lay

My little brown-eyed girl you
Seem so far away you’re
Always on my mind I miss you
I love you.

Only You

Written By: Rob Montone

Only You
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

All my life I’ve waited for you
All the empty streets I’ve walked alone
Seems like years that I’ve been lonely.

And all my life I’ve waited for a man
Someone like you to take me by the hand
And dance with me – to my empty song.

So long I’ve waited
And now you’re here
You know that I love you
And that I’ll always be here.

I’ll love you – forever I’ll love you
And you and I could own the universe
You and I could own the universe

And I’ll love you – forever I’ll love you
You touched my soul and took away my heart
Now I am yours – I am yours for eternity

So long I’ve waited
And now you’re here
You know that I love you
And that I’ll always be here

Only you –
Only you could fill my empty heart.

It's Been So Long

It’s Been So Long
(c. 1987, Rob Montone)

It’s been so long since I’ve talked to you
But the seasons still changed, the sky is still blue.
It’s been so long since you kissed me last
It’s still raining hard – but I know the clouds will pass

And I just want to let you know that I love you and I always will.

And I just want to let you know that every song I write will be for you.

So say goodbye to winter, baby
Say hello to spring
Let the sunshine warm your heart
So we won’t be torn apart
Anymore.

It’s been so long since you looked at me
Are you changing – or is it me?
And it’s been so long since I’ve looked at you
Do you love me still? I still love you.

I just want to see your eyes tell me that you love me and you’re mine.
I just want to taste your love and never let it slip away again.

So say goodbye to winter, baby
Say hello to spring
Let the sunshine warm your heart
So we won’t be torn apart
Anymore.

Repeat Refrain
