"Neal Thompson on Rob Montone's Music"

About the songwriter…

When I met 17-year-old Rob Montone in college, he was already a veteran, having written songs and played in bands since he was 12. But it wasn’t until his years in the coalmining, college town of Scranton, Pennsylvania that he came into his own. By the end of our first year together, he had already earned a loyal following of fans, drawn to the coffee houses and open mic nights to hear Rob’s folk-based repertoire of heartbreaking ballads, ethereal instrumentals and amazing guitar picking.

Across the next three years, Rob infused the culture of the school with his words and music, appearing regularly at talent and variety shows; local bars and impromptu amplified outdoor jams on summer afternoons. I watched as classmates memorized Rob’s songs, called out requests at Friday night happy hours, and then took those memories with them. Rob’s music was like the soundtrack behind our college years.

In subsequent years, many fans have called on Rob and his guitar to replay those beloved songs at their weddings. Others badgered him for tapes or CDs of his songs. Rob then used his self-taught arranging and producing skills, and his basement recording studio, to add orchestral accompaniment to his strong guitar playing and began selling self-produced CDs at local shops. Through word of mouth, the circle of Rob Montone fans has continued to spread ever wider, through the neighborhoods of Buffalo (home to another independent singer-songwriter, Ani DiFranco) and beyond.

A wider audience surely deserves the pleasure of hearing
the music of Rob Montone…
