Biography

Have you ever had a dream? Did you follow through with it? Will you look back in 50 years and regret not persuing that dream?

Growing up in Canso, Nova Scotia, Rob remebers being in attendance of the 1st Stan Rogers Folk Festival and being in awe of the music and songwriting. From that point on he was hooked.

2008 saw Rob coming full circle as he got to play on the Little Dover Stage during Stanfest as part as the Sherbrooke Songwriter's Showcase.

Although a late bloomer musically, Rob began to seriously write music and lyrics at age 27 with influences of JP Cormier, Dave Gunning, Ron Hynes and others always present in the back of his mind. Now at the tender age of 28, Rob is now completing his first EP and is starting to promote his songwriting and music locally.

Back to the dream part....Rob probably wouldn't be following through with the performance side of his music, but attending the Sherbrooke Now Songwriters retreat changed all of that. Collaborating and learning from first class musicians and songwriters such as Jason Wilber, Rose Cousins, Dave Carroll and Clary Croft lit the flame so to speak under Rob.

2008 to date has seen Rob on stage at the Saltscapes Expo, Music Nova Scotia open mic and at various coffee house events.

Away from home

Away from Home

In a hotel room, at the end of a long day
On an uncomfortable bed here I lay
Longing for the voices on the other side of the phone
That’s being away from home

I wonder if you think of me the same
I miss your voices, not hearing you play
I’m not there to tuck you in at night
That’s being away from home

Chorus:
The hands on the clock, don’t move when I’m away
So I’ve looked at your smiling face for the 5th time today
Wouldn’t it be good, if you only knew?
That I was looking at you

You know I never leave food on my plate
But I’ll tell you something, I left some today
In a room full of people, I feel alone
That’s being away from home

Last night I had a reoccurring dream
Tossing and turning, sweating in my sheets
Looked for your picture and realized it’s gone
That’s being away from home

Chorus:
The hands on the clock, don’t move when I’m away
So I’ve looked at your smiling face for the 5th time today
Wouldn’t it be good, if you only knew?
That I was looking at you
That I was looking at you

Skyline

Skyline
Rob Richardson © Socan

Pillars of concrete and steel
Essential to the city appeal
They come in different shapes and size
With no place to hide

Rising above clouds of grey
Across the horizon they survey
Unaware of what’s happening below
Oh if they could only know?

Someone’s looking for some shade
Homeless are begging for some change
Someone’s flagging down a cab
Someone’s in the alley getting stabbed

Chorus:
Skyline……..Skyline
You block the midday sun
Illuminate the sky at night
With a sea of people inside
Skyline

Window washers in mid air
Where you pray you don’t have to take the stairs
You fight for your parking spot
And hope for a cool breeze when it’s hot

Overcrowded streets
Where cars overheat
A man is having a fit of rage
Along side a woman stuck in labor pain

Chorus:

Bridge:
Someone’s writing on a wall
Someone’s on top about to fall
While inside business deals gone awry
As the office cuts in to family time

Chorus:

When I close my eyes

When I close my eyes
Rob Richardson © Socan

When I close my eyes, this is what I see
Safe and open arms, a world that sets you free
Oh that moment of calm and tranquil peace
Or is that wishful thinking
Or is that wishful thinking

When I close my eyes, this is what I dream
People give their word, and that is all you need
And nothing in between
Or is that wishful thinking
Or is that wishful thinking

This is why I write
My truth to re-ignite
I gonna bring my dreams to life
Or is that wishful thinking
Or is that wishful thinking
Or is that wishful thinking
Or is that wishful thinking

When I close my eyes, this is what I see

Lost for Words

Lost for Words
Rob Richardson © Socan

Another hollywood airhead in trouble with the law
Every where I looked that’s all I saw
Is there nothing better for news?
I’m lost for words

Global warming on the tv
And the celebrities arrive in their SUV’s
Do as I say and not as I do
I’m lost for words

The offices of our elected officials
Name calling, overpaid superficials
But don’t forget to vote
I’m lost for words

Background deals, under minded schemes
Are the backdrop of many corporate scenes
We’re barely scraping by
I’m lost for words

If it bleeds it has to lead
Previous rating to exceed
If we don’t air it someone will
I’m lost for words

Rush hour traffic your car breaks down
And you’re the subject to some explicit nouns
You get the finger instead of a helping hand
I’m lost for words

I don’t think it will ever end
Tired of shaking my head
Nothing surprises me anymore
I’m lost for words

Set List

Would be ideal for an opening act at this stage of career. A 30-45 minute set with lots of stage banter. Would also work well within a songwriters circle format.
