Bio

APRIL 11, 2009 -- ROB THRAN TOOK SECOND-PLACE TROPHY IN THE COWBOY SINGERS' COMPETITION AT THE COLUMBIA RIVER COWBOY GET-TOGETHER.

Rob Thran is a popular singer, guitarist, and songwriter who makes his home in the beautiful Methow Valley of north-central Washington. A lifelong working cowboy, Rob sings with an authenticity that springs from a life in the saddle.

Rob was born in upstate New York. That might seem an unlikely origin for a cowboy, but Robs father was a horse trainer and bronc-rider on the professional rodeo circuit. Horses and cowboy songs were woven into Robbys life by the time he was old enough to walk, and certainly by the time he could ride.

Heading west when he came of age, Rob spent several years in the high country of the Colorado Rockies. He worked at both the Paradise Ranch and Crystola Ranch, and eventually joined forces with Hank Cramer, Bill Paschall, and Tom Gregor to form a folk-rock-country fusion band known as Dakota. They cut their first vinyl LP, The Captain & The Outlaw, in 1982. It received national airplay and good reviews, and the band worked a wide circuit throughout the mountain towns of Colorado.

Rob later moved on to California, where he became foreman of the Wild Horse Valley Ranch in Napa and a popular solo performer in the Bay Area music scene. He also became an accomplished luthier, turning out some beautiful guitars and banjos, as well as doing some masterful restorations of old instruments.

Music and horses eventually drew Rob north to Washington State, where he now makes his home. Rob recently released his first solo CD, Saddle Up and Ride, with most of the tracks being his original compositions. He was a finalist in the songwriting contest at the 2001 Tumbleweed Folk Festival.

Rob has mastered a wide repertoire of songs beyond the cowboy genre. He is an excellent blues guitarist, plays Irish jigs and reels on hammered dulcimer, and is in wide demand as a show MC and host for jam sessions and open mikes.
