Bio
Robyn Springer is a professional vocalist whose richly diverse musical background includes a debut R&B solo album (Makin' Moves, Virgin Records/Cardiac); featured vocal performances on albums by such artists as contemporary jazz saxophonist Najee to Fugees' alternative/rapper John Forte; and various live tours from London to Greece, where she appeared with such legends as George Benson, Herbie Hancock, and Kirk Whalem. A native of New York City, Springer has also recorded on such labels as Atlantic, Transparent and Verve/Forecast . Springer, a first-alto, boasts a versatile and sultry style known to transport audiences from church pews to Delta juke joints to downtown jazz cafes.
BORN TO SING
After hearing a 3-year-old Springer sing, her grandmother taught the toddler a song to perform at church in front of the congregation. Ive been singing ever since, Springer says.
OLD SOUL
Although Springer loves music, she says that rap isnt her thing . I grew up on Anita Baker, Luther Vandross, and Stephanie Mills, she says. There was a large transition into hip-hop, and thats when R&B started to die out. But it didnt die in me.
THE ROOTS
Although she has crooned her own compositions in the past, she says fans like to hear selections from familiar artists, especially since many of the greats, like Phyllis Hyman, are gone. I like to dig into that bag of what made me feel good and what made me want to sing, she says. I try to bring back the music that we love so much.
NEW-SCHOOL NOTES
She encourages aspiring singers to look at the music industry in a different light. You can still be a part of the business and be fulfi lled, she says. Of course, our aspirations are to be giant superstar pop artists. That doesnt mean your gift cant fi ll peoples souls and inspire them.
A SONG FOR YOU
Shes currently working on an album of classics that has something for everyone. There will be tunes from The Jacksons, Bette Midler, and maybe even Joni Mitchell. The best part of [my career] is being able to sing what I want, she says. Its very hard for artists. Most of the time they arent given that freedom.
