Bio

Since the completion of the Rocket Suit line up earlier this year, the outfit has already made an impression, supporting acts like Damo Suzuki at the Noise Bar in February and headlining at the Fitzroy Music Festival in April. Rocket Suit is currently gigging round Melbourne, and has completed an EP to be released in August.

Rocket Suit’s is fronted by female singer/guitarist/songwriter Xen, who initially began performing as a solo artist around Melbourne in 2007. She has a background in classical training and opera and is highly influenced by the Japanese culture, medieval music, 70’s progressive rock/pop bands, improvisational jazz and world folk music.

Xen began looking for band members in 2008 and met Stewart Peters (aka MR Mitosis) who is an accomplished guitarist/songwriter. Stewart has perfected his ethereal signature sound over years of playing in the Melbourne and London music scenes, and is influenced by rock/pop bands such as Radiohead, Nirvana and the Pixies.

The two immediately felt undeniable musical/songwriting chemistry and began the band that has now become Rocket Suit. What makes their combination so unique is that while they are naturally complimentary, they are diametrically opposed both in their songwriting and playing styles. It is this unique fusion that makes Rocket Suit so different to other bands. Their sound cannot be pinned down to any one style of music. With each song the group transforms into something completely new and equally as exciting. It is nothing short of an unpredictable trip that takes sound and vision to the extreme with every tune.

The duo met bass player Vincent Rungo in late 2008. Vincent has fronted avant-garde original bands in the eighties and nineties such as SPINIFEX and SO KLEEN. As a bassist and guitarist, he’d combined the song crafting of Bowie and the anthemic eclecticism of King Crimson. In the nineties Rungo designed a tunable Djembe and formed his now successful company ‘Rungo Drums’.

After playing with two different drummers, the trio met their current drummer Pete Cave who balances a combination of pounding beats with a command of unusual timings and tempo changes. Pete has been in several pioneering bands over the years having been signed to Mushroom Records' label Suicide and sharing the line up with acts such as Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. Pete is also a master of video production techniques and special effects.
