Feeling a bit camera shy

There’s something instantly comforting about the name, once you meet the woman. It could be the name of a fighter, if you didn’t know. Instead, it’s the name of a singer, a fighter only in the sense that she cares about the sort of world we live in, and the sort of music she brings to people.

The music. Well, the name doesn’t fit the music. This is, after all, music that rarely punches. It sneaks up and captures your imagination and your emotions and your heart. Somehow, it’s not the music you expected.

Rocky Gaines comes from Texas, a big place, and full of many different cultures. As one songwriter put, “Texas is more than a state of mind.” It is also a place where you sing country if you’re country, or the blues if you’re black.

Well, this woman is black. And she’s country, blues, and folk, too. She’s from a small town outside of San Antonio. But her music is something else – warm, acoustic, intuitive rich songs.

It is music that’s been forged by experience and by time and by travel. Rocky’s the daughter of an Air Force family, and she’s lived in Cape Cod and Hawaii. She sang her way through university and has electrified clubs in Washington D.C. and back home in Texas, where she’s made her way through most cities, towns and festivals.

She now lives in California, but for some time made Canada her home. If Toronto offered a colder climate, it also offered a degree of seclusion that allowed her to devote her life to music. Her downtown apartment, high above the city, became a greenhouse that helped her music flourish and grow, and took her to performance in clubs, Sunday bars, coffee houses – and even to Germany, where a club tour gave her the first chance to take her music outside North America.

Along the way, Rocky Gaines adds more and more of her own songs to her list – and they make compelling music that helps people relate to themselves as well as to the woman on stage.

Rocky’s a singer. A songwriter. Someone who cares about her music.

And for the people who hear her, she’s a friend.
