Skin (for Avalon 2011)

They say “Clothes make the man”
But I don’t think they can
Clothes don’t do much of anything at all
They just hang there on their hangers
Or sit meekly on a chair
Or lie scrunched up on the floor in a ball…
So if you don’t know what to wear
You might consider going bare
If it wasn’t for cold weather, we wouldn’t need clothes at all…

Because we have skin…
Keeps the dirt out and your insides in
It’s breathable and stretchable
Waterproof and washable
Renewable and strong, yet thin…
And it fits you like a glove
Was given you with love
Lasts a lifetime and doesn’t cost a thing
-- Yeah we’re talking about skin….

Adam and Eve in Eden
Had no clothes -- they didn’t need ‘em
The Garden was climate-controlled…
They only started wearing leaves
And other things to beat the freeze
When they were kicked out in the cold
So fashion started with foliage from a fig
And then Eve asked Adam,
Is this too short?
Is this too long?
Does it match my eyes?
Is the color wrong?
Does this snakeskin hat need a feather or a twig?
And do these fig leaves make my butt look big?”
And Adam begged to be back in the Garden, like in days of old...

Just wearing skin…
Keeps the dirt out and your insides in
It’s breathable and stretchable
Waterproof and washable
Renewable and strong, yet thin…
And it fits you like a glove
Was given you with love
Lasts a lifetime and doesn’t cost a thing
-- Yeah we’re talking about skin….

You can lotion it or oil it
Tan or fan it but don’t boil it
Personalize it with some cool tattoos
Ooh, foxy...
It goes where you go
It grows where you grow
Whether up or out is down or up to you…

Skin comes in a many colors
Earth-tones and reds and yellows
From pink to white as bone and black as tar
Now, I don’t know about you
But I’ve not seen green or blue
Except for Smurfs and those folks in Avatar…
But if you watch CSI
Then you’ll know as well as I ... do
That beneath the epidermis we’re all human – that’s what we are…

And we have great skin…
Keeps the dirt out and your insides in
It’s breathable and stretchable
Waterproof and washable
Renewable and strong, yet thin…
And it fits you like a glove (well, mostly...)
Was given you with love
Lasts a lifetime and doesn’t cost a thing
-- Yeah we’re talking about skin….
-- Oh skin....
-- Gimme some skin
-- Oh skin....

Trouble

Trouble by Roderick Deacey © 2010

Oh, we live in a world full of trouble
Stands to reason, some will end up with you
And when it comes to dealing with trouble
Here’s what will carry you through…
Look trouble in the eye, and it soon will pass by
Bad trouble, big trouble or small
And every cloud has a silver lining
You just have to find it, that’s all…

Ch.: So don’t worry, don’t worry – everything will be fine
Tomorrow it’ll seem like a dream
Take a leaf from the book
Of the old babbling brook
It’s just a ripple in the stream

Sometimes there’s a good side to trouble
Like knocking down two birds with one stone…
If it don’t kill you, it makes you stronger --
Builds character and muscle tone
And speaking of that, that guy that you hit
Has been looking for you all over town
He says his dental work will cost $15,000
He’ll drop charges if you pay for his crowns…

But your credit card’s maxed
You left your laptop in a taxi
That stalker is out on parole (oh no-o-o!)
They outsourced your job
Someone kidnapped your dog
And your wife’s run away with a girl
Oooo…
They repo’ed your car
And that girl from the bar
Is having twins with your DNA (Yes A-A-A!)
You’re losing hair in handfuls
These are prime examples
Of how trouble will try to spoil your day

Ch.: But don’t worry, don’t worry – everything will be fine
Tomorrow it’ll seem like a dream
Take a leaf from the book
Of the old babbling brook
It’s just a ripple in the stream

So don’t you go looking for trouble
There’s quite enough headed your way
If you’ve time on your hands, you should make plans
For how to keep trouble at bay
When you’re watching a movie in your easy chair
Eating Chinese with a big ole glass of wine
Hear that knock at the door – Yep, that’s trouble
Trouble is always on time...

Ch.: But don’t worry, don’t worry – everything will be fine
Tomorrow it’ll seem like a dream
Take a leaf from the book
Of the old babbling brook
It’s just a ripple in the stream

Oh, there’s no doubt we could all use some trouble
Helps us tell the good times from bad…
Ice cream’s a treat on your birthday
Ice cream all the time, who wants that?
And speaking of food, if life’s a bowl of stew
And it’s tasting like nothing at all
Trouble is your salt and spice and pepper
Puts a little zing in the bowl…

Ch.: So don’t worry, don’t worry – everything will be fine
Tomorrow it’ll seem like a dream
Take a leaf from the book
Of the old babbling brook
It’s just a ripple in the stream
Take a leaf from the book
Of the old babbling brook...
It’s just a ripple in the stream
