"CD Review: Rodger Delany"

RODGER DELANY – MOMENT OF TRUTH (no label) Simplicity can often be the best approach. On Moment of Truth, the first full-length solo CD by Philadelphia/South Jersey-based singer/songwriter Rodger Delany, it’s often the songs with the simplest, stripped-down arrangements that yield the greatest impact. Through the disc’s 16 tracks, Delany utilizes mostly simple arrangements of acoustic guitar, piano, harmonica and voice to convey his myriad of thoughts and emotions. This enables Delany’s raw voice to directly communicate the emotion behind his compositions, and the intensity of his guitar picking and strumming to compliment that emotion. His bare-bones style frequently hints at Harvest/After the Gold Rush-era Neil Young, as well as the more stripped-down sides of Tom Petty and Bruce Springsteen. On the title track and album-opener, “Moment of Truth,” Delany shares his point of self-realization, while his sullen tone on “New” reveals his coming to grips with getting older. His gentle guitar and vocal tone express humble, heartfelt appreciation on “So Proud of You,” and his contrite tone admits vulnerability on “Catch Me When I Fall.” On the other end of the emotional spectrum, stormy relationship issues bare their fangs on Delany’s angrier rants, “Blind,” ”Without You” and “Second Guessed.” Delany throws a twist into the presentation with three piano numbers; his ode of longing “Coming Home,” the remorseful “Mischief” and the appreciative “Still Love America,” which closes the disc. Delany’s presentation is honest and from the gut; his words are delivered like he would express if he were seated next to you at a bar or café. The production and mix are appropriately simple, letting Delany’s minimalist performances do the talking with few, if any, major studio enhancements. For fans of basic, heartfelt emotion and music that gets directly to the point, Rodger Delany bares his soul on Moment of Truth, a moment of true person-to-person musical power. "Rodger Delany, Moment of Truth"

Rodger Delany’s all acoustic Moment of Truth has a hypnotic quality throughout. The album eases you up and down and back and it’s a good trip to be on. It has a nostalgic feel in some places and completely brand new feel in others. Delany gives the listener a wonderfully full experience without the pomp flash and circumstance of electronic manipulation. - That Music Magazine

"Rodger Delany - "Moment of Truth" CD Review by Martin Franzen"

Rodger Delany’s solo album “Moment of Truth” is one of those singer-songwriter efforts that hits you right in the face with emotions—longing, desperation, anger, deception, patriotism, love, loss—with a bare-bones approach that makes you feel as if you are in the songs, too.

Mostly acoustic guitar-driven, the songs traverse personal awakenings (“Moment of Truth”), aging(“New”), the pressure to do the right thing(“Out on the Edge”), love (“Every Time,” “Catch Me When I Fall”) and maintain one’s sanity (“Somebody Like You”). But the piano-based songs are the ones that really stand out. The longing expressed in “Mischief” is more pronounced with a solo piano and Tom Petty-like voicing. “Still Love America” offers plaintive piano, making it ripe for a 2012 political campaign’s video background.

Elsewhere, the album jumps out at the listener with anger (“Blind”) over a break-up (and its equally angry guitar work), with love (“Every Time”) in an upbeat change-of-pace and with eternal love (“Afterlife”) beyond the life we know.

Sixteen songs with sixteen raw emotions. Delany’s “Moment of Truth” CD requires the kind of attentive listening that used to come with LP purchases, when you couldn’t leave the room.

"Mount Laurel musician goes solo to communicate intimacy"

Posted: Thursday, May 24, 2012 1:51 pm | Updated: 4:07 pm, Thu May 24, 2012.

By Geoffrey Y. Guthe Staff writer | 0 comments

After performing in a band for more than 20 years, Rodger Delany took his first steps in a new direction in November 2010.

He was playing at Philadelphia’s Tin Angel, his first singer-songwriter show since high school. The 45-year-old Mount Laurel resident joked that the show was his "coming-out party" and led to his new growth as a musician.

Delany was the lead guitarist and a songwriter in the pop-rock band Mother Redcap, which is now the Steve Oakley Band.

At the Tin Angel, in front of “a sellout (crowd), completely packed full of friends, family, co-workers, and former Mother Redcap fans,” Delany said that since he “never had been a front man, my main concerns were in regards to what to say between songs."

He said he learned that, “oftentimes we tend to talk when you have nothing to say. It is something as a performer that I have been working on.”

Since then, Delany has found much to say, including on his latest release, "Moment of Truth," his first all-acoustic album.

“I feel like I am growing more now in the last year and a half than I did in 10 years,” said Delany, who grew up in Maple Shade.

“(Growth) isn’t something that ever truly ends. It is like being born again as a musician. It happened again that I grew as much again musically in the last three weeks as I did in the previous 10 weeks.”

Others have noticed Delany's growth.

“(Onstage as a solo performer) the question of ‘will my music come across?’ was effortless for Rodger. When he plays, he has a presence that is genuinely Rodger. He is truly himself,” said Patrick Keating, a musician and promoter for TBH Entertainment in Philadelphia.

On “Moment of Truth,” Delany worked and reworked all 16 songs many times. But he said his goal was to make them feel emotionally raw and honest.

“For me, it was (the song) 'Mischief' that struck me. It is one of the most powerful songs he has ever written. It almost brings a tear in my eye every time I hear it,” Keating said.

“I wanted to record the songs so they sounded like they were written 10 minutes before getting recorded,” Delany said.

He said he sang right up against the microphone to help get that intimate feeling. The music was purposely mastered to sound as if he used only one microphone in one room to communicate intimacy.

“I guess it's not unlike a beautiful man or woman getting older but still wanting to be beautiful. It is pretty clear now that I am not going to be a rock star. It is just not about me anymore. It is literally all about the music.”

Delany plans to record another album eventually and has been considering writing a Christmas song as well.

He is performing at various venues in Philadelphia and New Jersey, including shows at Hebe Music on Mill Street in Mount Holly on Friday and World Cafe Live on Walnut Street in Philadelphia as part of the second annual Mid Summer Classic on July 28.

Delany's music can be found at iTunes and CD Baby. For more information, visit rodgerdelany.com.

Bio

After years as a lead guitarist, Rodger Delany put down the electric guitar and dusted off an old acoustic starting on a path to find his own voice.  The journey began by performing at numerous open mics where he was mentored by veterans and soon developed his own style. Rodger performed his first solo acoustic show at a sold-out Tin Angel in Philly in November 2010.  By mid 2014, Rodger had performed on acoustic guitar, piano or as full band electric at venues such as World  Café Live, Legendary Dobbs,  The Record Collector, Dewey Beach Music Conference, Millennium Music Conference, Musikfest, Cape May Singer Songwriter, Liberty Music Festival, Hollystock, The Queen Theater and House of Blues  in Dallas and Los Angeles.

Late in 2014, Rodger Delany travelled "two thirds of the way across the country" to "find a better life in Texas."  He now calls Texas "home" and can be found performing from Denton down to Austin.
