Bio

Cuban rap artist, music producer and DJ, known in Cuba as DJ Compadre, is the founder of Q’Ba Music Productions in California.

One of the pioneers of Cuban Rap in La Habana, he was co-founder of the internationally known group Obsesión. With this group he came out with the first Hip Hop album released in Cuba, “Un montón de cosas” (1999). After coming to the US in 2001, he continued to build his musical profile by building an in-home studio and writing beats and music for local hip hop groups. His musical styles include Cuban Hip Hop as well as a fusion of different Caribbean rhythms with Hip Hop.

In Cuba, he performed in many venues, including La Casa de la Música, Café Cantante, Teatro Nacional, UNEAC (National Union of Cuban Artists and Writers), ICAIC (National Film Association), and in three consecutive Cuban Hip Hop Festivals (1996, 1997, 1998) where he performed with the group Obsesión, winning second place (1997) and first place (1998) awards for their innovative style and lyrical creativity. He has collaborated with Alain Fonseca, prestigious jazz artist and producer of “Un montón de cosas”. Before leaving Cuba he produced a compilation album with the Hip Hop groups such as Justicia, Explosión Suprema, Tercera Roca and MC Mariana.

Besides being recognized as the first Hip Hop DJ in Cuba, he has appeared in two classic Cuban films, “Mi socio, Manolo” and “Un hombre de éxito”; as well as performed in Cuban theatre in “La morena de las clavellinas” and other plays.

In the US he has performed at Lehigh University in Pennsylvania, at the Boricua Heritage Festival in Philadelphia, at the University of Illinois, Urbana Champagne during Latino Heritage Week, in Los Angeles at UCLA and in Santa Ana, Ca.

His current projects include working with Cuban artists and musicians in the US, such as renowned violinist Gerardo Aguillón, and the production of three albums. The first is his own album, “Sin pelos en la lengua (No Holding Back)”, a fusion of Hip Hop beats with Caribbean rhythms and sounds; the second with Cuban Hip Hop MC Lil Laroye, “Aquí viene Laroye”; and the third is a fusion of Latin Hip Hop featuring Reggaeton “Cuba sabrosa”.
