Working together for a better world

Written By: Roger Courtney

Working together

1. We know it won’t be easy to turn the world around
We know it will take time to climb to higher ground
There’s nothing we can’t do if we really believe
There’s no barriers to the things that we can achieve

Chorus: we’re gonna work together for a better world (x4)

2. All the way through history you can see it’s power extend
It gave the vote to woman and brought slavery to an end
It was the power of the people that made apartheid fall
It was the power of the people that brought down the Berlin wall

Chorus

3. And now when half the world doesn’t have enough to eat
And in the cities people sleeping on the street
You can feel the wind of change blowing through the land
Change is gonna come it just needs a helping hand.

Chorus

Oscar

Written By: Roger Courtney

OSCAR
His name was Oscar, he was only a child
He lived on the streets, but you should have seen him when he smiled
With his shiny white teeth and a sparkle in his eye
When he asked you for money, it was hard to just walk by

He became an orphan at the tender age of eight
When he came into this world, no-one could have guessed his fate
His father had left home before he was born
And when his mother died of Aids, there was no-one there to mourn

Chorus
Oh, oh Oscar you loved to play the clown
Oh, oh Oscar I know we let you down

Everyday he went out and searched from bin to bin
But on this day like most days the pickings were pretty slim
With an empty belly and hunger spinning round his head
He walked into the nearest shop and stole a loaf of bread

As he tried to escape it didn’t matter how he’d run
‘Cos somebody had seen him and followed with a gun
In only 30 seconds young Oscar was dead
The life of a child for one small loaf of bread (Chorus)

The police investigation was over in a week
No-one said that they saw Oscar gunned down in the street
When they buried young Oscar - still no-one there to mourn
no-one to protect him from the day that he was born (Chorus)

Each day somewhere in the world, the some scene repeats
Another child is killed, just to clean the city streets
When I recall the face of Oscar that day when he smiled
I can begin to see the world through the eyes of a child (Chorus)

This Train is Gone

Written By: Roger Courtney

THIS TRAIN HAS GONE

I was in love with you I know
But that was very long ago
You were a big part of my life back then
But I’m not going back there again.

Chorus
You better sing a different song
‘Cos the journey here has been so hard and long
Going back there would be wrong
This train is gone

It was just so hard getting over you
I had thought your heart would be true
Do you think that I’ve forgotten when
I had to rebuild my life again.

Chorus

Yes, it’s true I often think of you
And I admit I’ve thought about it too.
If we now play let’s pretend
We both know how it’s gonna end

So turn around and walk out that door
I’m not in love with you any more
I might regret it when your gone
But I know that feeling won’t last long.

Chorus

You can't tell your heart

Written By: Roger Courtney

YOU CAN’T TELL YOUR HEART WHAT TO DO

My friends kept telling me that he wasn’t going to stay
That he was sure to break my heart some day.
I knew they were right when they said he’s not for you.
But you can’t tell your heart what to do.

Each time I think it’s different, that it won’t be like the past.
I feel that this time it’s really going to last.
But that’s how love is, whenever it’s new
But you can’t tell your heart what to do.

Bridge
You can look for advice. You can listen to your friends.
You can logically think it all through.
But the truth in the end, when all’s said and done
You can’t tell your heart what to do.

At the beginning things seem to go fine
Then I find out he’s been spinning me a line
In affairs of the heart I don’t seem to have a clue
But you can’t tell your heart what to do.

Time after time it’s always the same
I know that I only have myself to blame.
I keep choosing men who make me feel blue
But you can’t tell your heart what to do.

Shoes

Written By: Roger Courtney

ONE MORE PAIR OF SHOES

When I’ve had a good day and I’m feeling really great
I’m so pleased with myself I want to celebrate
I don’t want to drink champagne or eat caviar,
or pamper myself or go for a spin in the car
I won’t book into a spa, or go on a cruise
I’ll use my flexible friend to buy one more pair of shoes

And when my head is swimming with all the world’s ills
and I’ve just run out of my happy pills
and I start to worry that I’ll never again be kissed
then I fall in love with my therapist
It’s time to get off the coach - I know how to beat the blues
All I really have to do is buy one more pair of shoes

Bridge
I’ve been gathering shoes since the day I was born
Some don’t even fit and some have never been worn
There’s shoes with sequins and some that are plain
Shoes for the summer, and shoes for the rain
When you look in my wardrobe it’s not hard to see
That Imelda Marcos has got nothing on me
Shoes with straps, shoes with ties
Boots to my ankles and some right up to my thighs
Should I buy more Prada or perhaps some Jimmy Choos
I just have to buy just one more pair of shoes

I’ll soon be out of rehab and I know I’m cured
There’s just one last session that has to be endured
Well getting to this point has been a hard old climb
And I know that I must take just one day at a time
If you ask me to go shopping, I know I can refuse
After I have bought just one more pair of shoes

There’s nothing so exciting that can give you such a thrill
Someone should find a way to put it in a pill
I really can’t help it and I’m sure I’m going to hell
It’s the touch of the leather and that intoxicating smell
It’s got to be better than sex and more fun than booze
The overpowering thrill of buying just one more pair of shoes

Extra verse
So I’m starting a support group for other women just like me
Who have reached the end of the line and want to be free
We will get together on Friday nights and provide mutual support
For many of the women it is their last resort
For me I know that I can stop just whenever I choose
After I have bought just one more pair of shoes

The Pollen of Peace

Written By: Roger Courtney

Chorus
Let us spread the pollen of peace throughout our land
Let us spread the pollen of peace throughout our land
Let us spread the pollen of peace and make all hatred cease
Let us spread the pollen of peace throughout our land

Oh Christ has sown the seeds of love
Oh Christ has launched the winged dove
let us make the flower grow and let the peaple know
That Christ has launched the winged dove

Chorus

All it needs is our love to make it grow
All it needs is our hopefulness to show
And tell those who are choked with fear that the prince of peace is here
All it needs is our love to make it grow.
