"Grup Rock & Roll Bali, Rollfast, Siap Tur Konser Jepang September Mendatang"

- Rolling Stone Indonesia

"ROLL FAST OR DIE"

Rollfast came on stage at The Beat Room a couple of Friday nights ago and swayed their way nonchalantly into some classic hard hitting, but strangely laid back, rock music that knocked most folks in the crowd out of the ball park. Their infectious sound and laconic antics had the crowd reeling for more, so much so that we needed to find out who the heck these dudes were as soon as possible. David Trauts sat down with Agha Praditya from Rollfast to find out what makes this young and exciting band tick.

TB: Tell us something about yourself
Agha: We are Rollfast. We’re a rock/psychedelic band from Denpasar, Bali, formed in mid 2011 and the band consists of me, Agha (vocals) Bayu (guitar) Gung Wah (guitar) Arya (bass) and Maurits (drums).

TB: And who are you?
Agha: I’m Agha, I’m from Denpasar and I’m 18 years old.

TB: Do you still go to school?
Agha: I just finished high school about a year ago, and I’m currently going to college.

TB: Studying what?
Agha: Architecture…

TB: What’s the band’s main influences?
Agha: Hmm I don’t know, it’s just a mix of everything that came out of our heads but it would be a lie if I didn’t mention Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd and a little bit of Led Zepellin I guess..

TB: When you are on stage it seems like the band has a kind of drunken sway going on – what’s that about? Is that the band’s normal style?
Agha: Like everything it just flows hahaha… Yeah we enjoyed the atmosphere there at Pyramid last night and the crowd was very enthusiastic. We were also a little bit wasted hahaha.

TB: I like it whatever it is.
Agha: Actually the normal style would be something like that but last night was like *boom* And thanks.. Good to hear that you liked it!

TB: What are your songs about in general?
Agha: Hmm, something from the life of the marginalized I guess.

TB: Who is writing all the music for the band? Music and lyrics?
Agha: For the music we usually just jam in the studio so there’s no real writing, just pure jamming. And for the lyrics, I write them.

TB: How did you first start singing?
Agha: Back when I was in 5th grade elementary school. It was because of the game “guitar hero” hahaha. At first I didn’t have any interest in singing, I wanted to start a band and play guitar, but there wasn’t anyone else in our school that could sing so I had to learn to sing for the band.

TB: So has singing come to you naturally or has it been hard work?
Agha: It took a while to get the feel at the beginning, but after knowing a few tricks it worked out quiet well.

TB: What do you do in your spare time?
Agha: I just study and go to classes and on the weekend I’ll go hang out with my friends or sometimes go to the woods.

We’re not sure what inspiration Agha gets in the woods but make sure, if you like a little left of centre psychedelic rock, to get down to The Beat Room at Pyramid next Friday April 11 to find out exactly how good they are. - Beat Magazine

"PSYCH INSIGHT: NEW MUSIC, LIVE AT JIZZ STUDIO BY ROLLFAST"

One of the utterly fantastic things about the Psych scene is it’s global nature. In the past year I have written about great music from all five continents, and am always excited when I hear of musicians in another part of the world tuning into this amazing music. That I why I was really interested this week to hear from Bali, Indonesia from a band who are clearly ploughing a really interesting furrow which, for me, lies somewhere between Kikagaku Moyo and the Black Angels.

According to the band’s Facebook page: “Rollfast is a psychedelic-rock band from Bali, Indonesia, formed in 2011. The five-piece is currently consists of vocalist Agha Paraditya, bassist Aan Triandana, drummer Ayrton Maurits Willem, and two guitarists Gungwah Brahmantia, and Bayu Krisna. They define themselves as loud and energetic rock performers, with a blend of psychedelic, blues and jazz music at some point. During live set, the band mostly experiment on sound effects, improvise, and play sound that can be heavily haunting.”

This seems to be a pretty accurate, and I really like the band’s sound which feels both heavy and languid at the same time, laid back yet somehow urgent. This is music that really needs to be listened to in a smoky basement club late at night as you drift also with the riffs and grooves. This is music that really gets down and dirty, and it is music that really infiltrates you mind and demands that you be dragged along by it.

From the two tracks shared here (‘Baby 69′ and ‘Untitled’) there is a lot more to come from Rollfast, and I hope that we will be seeing them soon in the smokeless basement clubs of Europe. - Backseat Mafia

"Interview: Aan and Agha from Rollfast"

Psychedelic rock is an international phenomenon that transcends all cultural and linguistic boundaries. It’s face-melting guitar riffs, rumbling basslines, and relentless drums hammering out powerful rhythms are cosmic ambassadors urging listeners to free their minds.

From its humble beginnings in the 1960s, it has spread to all corners of the globe and evolved into a massive underground scene championing walls of feedback and altered states of consciousness.

We recently caught up with Balinese psych-rockers Rollfast to get the latest vibes from the scene in Bali. Bassist Aan Triandan and vocalist Agha Praditya were kind enough to give us a look into the underground world of Rollfast and the general state of music in Bali.

BNU: So I’m curious, how did Rollfast begin?

Aan: Me, Agha (vocals), and Bayu (guitar) were in a high school death metal band, while the rest, Gungwah (guitar), and Ayrton(drums) were playing rock music in high school talent festivals and such. We all ended up having the same interest in classic/hard/psych rock music which brought Rollfast together. After covering music by Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and so on, we decided to just jam and write our own stuff.

BNU: Oh, nice! Yeah, The killer guitar work on Baby 69 reminds me a lot of Black Sabbath…

Aan: Yeah definitely! Black Sabbath has been one of our biggest influences, not to mention bands like Pink Floyd, Graveyard, Swans, and many other 70s Indonesian psych rock bands. We also listen to a lot of world music, jazz, and just rock in general.

BNU: Very cool, so how do you guys write your music?

Aan: We started composing beats and riffs from just random jam sessions and then we discuss the overall character of how we want the music to sound like. Finally Agha will fill in the vocals with lyrics he think suits the song best.

BNU: Where do you guys practice? Do most musicians in Bali practice at home or in a studio?

Agha: We practice at home. But most of our friends practice at a rental studio. We’re really lucky that Gungwah (guitar) has a studio.

BNU: Judging by your Facebook and Instagram, you guys seem to play live often, is there a big psych rock scene in Bali?

Aan: I think Bali has a massive underground scene for death metal and punk music. It’s kind of unfortunate, but I think the market is slowly expanding for us as our crowd at shows keeps getting larger. We’re definitely not the first band to play this kind of music here, but it’s alway exciting to see the crowd’s reaction listening to our music… it’s like they’re discovered something new to listen to and try to blend into it.

BNU: Do the punk and death metal crowds seem to enjoy your music or are the scenes very separate?

Agha: Yeah, everyone seems to enjoy everyone else’s music. At first, people didn’t seem to understand what we were doing, but after some time people are starting to enjoy our music.

BNU: So where is your favorite venue to play and why is it your favorite?

Agha: My favorite would be Twice Bar, mainly for the ambience there… So much energy. A lot of legendary Balinese bands were born there. It’s like Bali’s CBGBs.

BNU: I also saw you guys were featured on the WANITA mixtape in Australia, how did that come about?

Aan: We actually opened for Empat Lima (organiser of the mixtape) during their tour in Indonesia, and got an email the next few days or something like that about being featured in the WANITA mixtape, which we are excited about. Honestly, we thought our music didn’t make the cut because we never heard back after the conversation via email.

BNU: Do you guys plan to do any international touring anytime soon?

Aan: We really hope to visit Australia sometime next year. The psych scene out there is getting massive and we can’t wait to play our music to a different market. Get out music out there so we can get our Australian tour planned out!

BNU: I see you guys recently finished recording a new album? When is that coming out?

Aan: The album was recorded last year in Jakarta. We chose to do a live recording just to get that intimate feeling with our music. All the songs are in the mixing and mastering phase so hopefully it’ll be done sometime this year.

BNU: Are there any other Indonesian bands you guys like?

Aan: YES! Navicula, The Hydrant, White Shoes and the Couples Company, Seringai, Deep Sea Explorers, Komunal, and heaps more! Its such a pity that music from our side of the world is kinda left out, but hopefully someday in the future! - The Beige Baron

Bio

ROLLFAST is a psychedelic-rock band from Bali, Indonesia, formed in
2011. The five-piece is currently consists of vocalist Agha Paraditya,
bassist Aan Triandana, drummer Ayrton Maurits Willem, and two guitarists
Gungwah Brahmantia, and Bayu Krisna. They define themselves as loud and
energetic rock performers, with a blend of psychedelic, blues and jazz
music at some point. During live set, the band mostly experiment on sound effects, improvise, and play sound that can be heavily haunting.

Their musical style evolved through from recent years, yet still based
on their main influences the Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Pink Floyd,
and basically any other classic rock artists. Despite the band’s main
influences, Agha’s heavy vocal style changed from metal into the storm
rider, The Doors, while Aan’s musical believe has converted more darker
like Swans and the Black Angels. Gungwah and Bayu’s guitar riff comes
from classic rock bands, as well as modern psychedelic echoes, and
Ayrton’s hardly-knocked drumbeat, and powerful performance comes by
worshipping the Zeppelin.

Together, they picture their live
set as a life cycle, where the intro starts from slow-jam progression,
into heavy guitar riffs. Prior to their final set, the music sound
almost like an electric execution, shown by instrumental noises, and
suffering vocal scream. Death, or the end of the set is when the delay
stops. Fatality is a beauty; if you hear closely to the echoing rhythms
crawl.
