Quote:
Earthworks Microphones were introduced to me in San Francisco during a two week session with Drummer, Jim Keltner. I loved the Earthworks clarity and sound and Jim liked me. A great session I’ll long remember on both fronts. I loved these Earthworks so much, I took a chance and introduced the Earthworks sound to Steve Gadd while recording his “Life and Times” documentary, and now Steve endorses Earthworks. Jerry Marotta, Aaron Comes, Lenny White, Harvey Sorgen, Rick Gratton, Chris Gartmann, Pat Mastelotto, and the list goes on with the great drummers and Earthworks in place. I’ve recently started applying Earthworks to all my Steinway Piano recordings and these microphones are really great. Thank you, Earthworks! RK: Roman Klun – Record Producer / Mixer / Songwriter

GRAHAM ROCKINGHAM
THE HAMILTON SPECTATOR
(Jan 30, 2010)
When Stoney Creek native Roman Klun's name is read out at the Grammy Awards in Los Angeles tomorrow, he'll be at the opposite side of the country doing what comes naturally -- getting the best sound possible for the artist he's recording.
Klun, who built his first recording studio when he was still attending Orchard Park Secondary School, received a Grammy nomination for sound engineer of the year on Leslie Mendelson's soft-rock album, Swan Feathers.
"I got the invitation (to the Grammys) in the mail about a week ago, the free ticket, all the parties and everything," Klun said in a recent interview from his parents' home in Beamsville.
"I almost booked my flight ... but I've been asked to produce an album with a jazz-hip hop band called New York Electric Piano in New Jersey. Because of the players involved, it's a nightmare scheduling sometimes. It's got to be done."
Klun now lives in the United States and has a home and studio near Woodstock, N.Y., and an apartment in New York City.
During his 20-year career as a sound engineer and producer, he's worked on albums by a varied array of artists including Sarah McLachlan, Anthrax, Pete Seeger, Tony Levin, Maestro Fresh Wes, Ornette Coleman, Gino Vanelli, Joan Osborne and the Holmes Brothers. He's also recorded three CDs of his own as a singer-songwriter.
He has won a Genie Award, worked on several Juno-award winning albums and has been honoured by the Audio Engineering Society, but this is the first time he has been nominated for a Grammy.
Klun realizes he's up against tough competition, especially veteran soundman Al Schmitt, whose illustrious career stretches back to the '50s working with people like Frank Sinatra and Sam Cooke.
"For me the victory has already been won. It's just getting the nomination," he says.
Still loyal to his roots, Klun returns home to the Hamilton area several times a year, working with Ian Thomas on his Lunch At Allen's projects, and at Dave King's Barn Window studio with blues guitarist Steve Strongman.
Klun is one of several world-class producers and engineers who learned their craft in Hamilton.
The list includes Daniel Lanois, who is also nominated in two Grammy categories this weekend for his production work on U2's latest CD No Line on the Horizon. Lanois' Grant Avenue Studio also apprenticed star producers like Mark Howard (Lucinda Williams, Tom Waits, Chris Whitley) and David Bottrill (King Crimson, Tool, Mudvayne).
Klun's entry into the local music scene was through Ian Thomas, a Dundas-born songwriter who has had songs recorded by Santana, Chicago, America and Manfred Mann. Through Thomas, Klun met Hamilton guitarist Bill Dillon, a studio magician who has recorded with some of the biggest names in the business, including Robbie Robertson and Joni Mitchell.
Dillon convinced Klun to spend some time at the Lanois team's Kingsway studio in New Orleans in the late '80s. Instead of applying the time to recording other people's music, however, Klun ended up writing his own songs there.
That music stayed tucked away in the back of his mind until last year, when Klun recorded his third solo album. It's called Kingsway and contains an impressive backing band of A-list musicians, including Tony Levin and Jerry Marotta (Peter Gabriel, King Crimson) and members of Levon Helm's band.
"I don't want to be known as just 'a good engineer,'" Klun says. "I'd rather be known as a guy who can do it all, write a good song, make it sound great and produce it. I'm trying to fill as many of the departments I can."

Roman Klun's 'Kingsway' an Impressive Collection -- WITH AUDIO
ARTIST: Roman Klun
ALBUM: "Kingsway" (Innsbruck Records)
Hurley resident Roman Klun is known internationally as a recording engineer, vis a vis his work with Sarah McLachlan and others. With this spectacular release, "Kingsway," he now emerges as an artist.
Klun wrote, played, produced, recorded, mixed this CD and uses some of the best musicians on the planet including Steve Gadd and legendary locals Tony Levin, Pete Levin, Jerry Marotta, Gerry Leonard, Joey Eppard, Jesse Gress, Steven Bernstein and Erik Lawrence.
The expansive "Stairs On The Hill" features the to-die-for rhythm section of Levin/Klun, while "Whisper Kiss" holds some sinister synths and a hypnotic groove; here Klun clearly conveys emotion without overtly emoting. Klun climbs into "Red River" pushed along by Levin's ominous quarter notes and Gerry Leonard's lushly layered guitars.
Klun wears his influences on his sleeve here, from the pervading Peter Gabriel vibe, the bigger than life "Something You Said" which recalls Simple Minds; while "More Than This" has underlying U2 overtones. Steve Gadd's ultimate groove pushes "New York Lady," the pensive "Street Artists" is a highlight.
With "Kingsway," Klun has crafted an elegant, impressive collection of songs and moments in time. Maybe that's why they used to call them "records."
Selected tracks from "Kingsway"
1. "Stairs On the Hill"
6. "Love Your Radio"
8. "Nigel"
9. "Between the Lines"
11. "Street Artists"

Roman Klun TV Guest Appearance on “Title This”
MHN Management is pleased to announce that on Friday, September 5th, 2008, Roman Klun will be featured as a musical guest on the famed “Title This” – a game show where art critics and celebrities compete to name paintings from world renowned artist and composer, Mark Kostabi, for cash awards.
As Lisa Paul Streitfield’s review in NY Arts of Thomas McEvilley’s new book: The Triumph of Anti-Art: Conceptual and Performance Art in the Formation of Postmodernism: stated, “…[watch] Mark Kostabi’s cynical conceptual art performance piece on his Manhattan cable television show where he invites critics to title his non-art objects (which proclaim their sole importance in not being painted by the artist).”
Roman Klun will be performing two songs from his newly released album, “Kingsway.” Klun is a multi-platinum award winning engineer (Sarah McLachlan) and award winning producer and now emerges as an exceptional solo artist backed by legendary locals, Gerry Leonard (guitar, vocals), Daniel A. Weiss (keys, vocals), Chris Gartman (drums, vocals), Daniel Grimsland (bass, vocals) and Pam Sue Man (vocals, keys).

Roman Klun | Kingsway
(Innsbruck Records)
by M.R. Smith
November 2008
Roman Klun has been one busy guy. As a recording and mixing engineer and producer, he’s been behind the desk for numerous projects for such luminaries as Sarah McLachlan, Pete Seeger, Gino Vanelli, and Tony Levin Band, as well as locally based groups Mechanical Bull, Murali Coryell, and the band 3. Somewhere between those sessions, he’s managed to record this, his third full CD of material in twelve different studios in the U.S. and Canada, after having written those songs in New Orleans, Toronto, the U.K., Paris, Austria, the Ukraine, and New York City. The man gets around.
And it’s a stellar cast helping out here. Though he himself is an excellent drummer (and guitarist), Klun enlists some of the very best to help on the skins: Steve Gadd, Jerry Marotta, Aaron Comess. The legendary Tony Levin anchors the bass chair, and other contributors include Jesse Gress, Gerry Leonard, Harvey Jones, and 3’s Daniel Grimsland and Joey Eppard.
The results are a surprisingly cohesive group of songs that wears its influences on its sleeve with pride. The CD’s title, Kingsway, is based on inspiration gained from a visit to Grammy-winning producer Daniel Lanois’ (Peter Gabriel, U2, Bob Dylan, etc.) famous New Orleans studio, and so, in many ways, are the songs and production styles. Swirling guitar and synthesizer atmospheres twist around above fluid bass and motoring drums, songs make unusual and often interesting shifts, and Klun sings his arch lyrics in his lower range, sounding much like gruff Lanois on his Acadie CD. Sonically, it’s densely packed and radio ready, though word-wise nothing quite rises to the anthemic quality the music suggests, though “Stars On the Hill” and “Angel” make a good shot at it.
