Ron Anthony Interview

It’s time to put the LIVE back into performances and ROMANCE back into R&B and leading the charge is Ron Anthony, one of the hottest, most talented new singer/songwriters to hit the scene. He is ready to take the world by storm with his live performances with his big band, romantic lyrics and a voice that Luther Vandross anointed as the next crooner!

With his powerful vocals and signature sound, Ron Anthony is poised to usher in a new era of sexy soul. Ron comes across as a talented and humble artist who is destined for big things.

What have you been doing lately?

We’re working on a soundtrack for a film with Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe. There’s a possibility that I may have a role in the film but that will be discussed nearer the time.

When did you begin writing your own songs?

When I was about 7 or 8 years old! I haven’t recorded any of them though…

What was it like going to the same school that Barbra Streisand went to?

It was the same music program that was around in her time; it was definitely a great experience for me. I think it’s very important that people study music to broaden their horizons to see past the black and white of music because music is colourless.

How did Luther Vandross come across you?

I was doing an off Broadway Show “Born To Sing” and I had a bunch of solos. He came to my dressing room and said how much he enjoyed my performance and that I was a great new talent. He watched me for a few shows over many years and after one show where I was singing background he signed me.

How much did his death have an impact on you?

I was devastated and relieved at the same time because he was a very independent person and after the stroke he had to rely on people to look after him. Although I knew I was going to miss him very much I knew he would be free from being encaged from a body that wouldn’t respond when he wanted it to.

I know that you appeared in a musical, would you want to do more in the future?

It would have to be a major thing for me to do it because right now I’m working on my music and the album to make it successful. People have put in a lot of work so it would be better to focus on that right now.

Linda [Berk] managed Ashanti who won a Grammy, how did you hook up with her and do you think you will be as successful?

I was singing at an open mic night in a bar and she was one of the attendees that night, I guess she thought I did well! With Linda’s expertise I know I’ll get that far, she makes stars.

How important do you think it is to sing live?

Very important I think. Live performances will dictate how good an artist is. It’s about presentation and to show you’re a real artist.

What will you be working on now?

The album’s almost finished; we’re going to get it mastered soon. We want the release to be a big deal. The soundtrack we’re working on will be released nearer the film release date which won’t be until 2007. There are a few shows coming up at the Sugar Bar (where Linda saw me perform), some dates in Chicago…just keeping it going.

Will you be doing any collaborations in the future?

Yeah, I definitely hope so. With this soundtrack project there may be people such as Alicia Keys and Anthony Hamilton that will get involved, we’ve written the songs with those kinds of artists in mind.

BIOGRAPHY
Ron believes it’s time to put the live back into performances and romance back into R&B music. As one of the hottest, most talented new singer/songwriters to hit the scene, he is leading that charge, ready to take the world by storm with his energetic performances, live band, romantic lyrics and a voice that Luther Vandross anointed as the next crooner! One of the lsst things Luther told Ron was "if you believed in yourself as I believe in you, heaven would be your audience and the stars would be at your feet!"
This Brooklyn native’s roots are in the church. A natural performer, he started singing at the age of 3 in a gospel choir where he discovered the power of music and his love for live performances. Ron spent his summers with his grandparents in North Carolina where he delighted the congregation with his rousing and evocative solos. He graduated from Erasmus Hall High School of Performing Arts, the training ground for multi-talented artists Barbra Streisand and Stephanie Mills. It was here that he developed his distinctive sound and five-octave tenor. Ron then studied with the famed artistic director Harry Poe at Mindbuilders Creative Arts Center where he triple majored in acting, musical theater and dramatic arts.
In 1992, Ron won a lead role in the touring production of “Mama, I Want to Sing”, spending several years performing in the United States, Europe, Japan and Taiwan where he made a name for himself as a live performer. He also began to build a solid reputation as a background singer, working with Phoebe Snow, Chico Debarge and Amel Larrieux.
Through these shows Ron caught the attention of the one of the greatest R&B vocalists of our time. Luther Vandross saw several of Ron’s performances and recognizing his undeniable talent, signed Ron to an exclusive deal to his production company. He spent the next year singing backgrounds with Luther off and on and recording and writing his music while performing private gigs and club dates.
Since then, Ron has been captivating audiences with his charismatic vocals and dynamic stage performances. Ron’s focus is reintroducing smooth lyrics and seductive melodies to today’s R&B and soul music. He signed with Notable Entertainment, the manager behind the phenomenal success of multi-platinum Grammy winner Ashanti and headed to the studio, crafting the heartfelt ballads “You and Me” and “You Are My Love Song”, the party song “Ay Oh!” and the tribute to his son "My Little Boy”.
“My music is multi-generational,” explains Ron. “I write songs that everyone can relate to – an eclectic mix of old school and the new.” He counts soul pioneers Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and Marvin Gaye among his influences, but it was the poetry of Maya Angelou that inspired him to develop his talents as a songwriter. His music explores the themes of love, respect and social responsibility.
Ron’s talents extend beyond the studio. He is a skilled actor who has appeared in the musical “Aint Misbehavin’” and shared the stage with CeCe Winans, Regina Belle, Shirley Caesar, Vanessa Bell Armstrong, Stephanie Mills and Isaiah Washington.
With his powerful vocals and signature sound, Ron Anthony is poised to usher in a new era of sexy soul.

Ron Anthony called his debut album "RA". RA stands for Ron Anthony but you can easily translate these capitals to Romantic Anthony. On the fifteen tracks we find on the album Ron brings the romance back into R&B music.
The woman has a leading role on Ron Anthony's efforts to achieve his goal. She's somebody precious and beautiful and daddy Ron knows how to treat hear as we find out in the song "I Got What It Takes". But she's more than a body to Ron, she's also a rock in a stormy sea, a creature to adore and cherish like we hear in "You Are My Love Song".
Ron Anthony has a warm voice and his capability to switch between the notes brings variety in his songs. Of course this variety also depends on the producers he is working with like Diablo and Kidd Kold.
"One Love" for example is a soulful song like the O'Jays used to sing. But Ron Anthony is also a contemporary R&B singer which in his approach of his music might make you recall someone like Montell Jordan. Also the family man in him which is crystallized in "My Little Boy" might be very much appreciated by the ladies.
The laid-back R&B in the song "You And Me" is so sweet and sure feels good. Yes, smooth R&B is how you might call Ron's music although it gets rocky sometimes. The vibes are right and the romance is definitely brought back in R&B on "RA" by Ron Anthony.(TA)

Ron Anthony and Linda
Berk coming at ya

You may not know who Linda Berk
is but she is one of the few kind and genuine women in the business

mom Tina. She was with Ashanti
for 10years, from when Ashanti
was 13.She got Ashanti's deal for her at Jive and Noontime/Epic Records. She's a hard-working
woman.

Linda called while Iwas
In New Yorkfor me to come

Luther Vandross before his
untimely death. Ron was Luther's
protege. Although Linda isshopping

The showcase was at Joe's Pub, an intimate Lower

While there, Iran into Wyclef

with her.

I'm wishing Linda and Ron the
