Biography

Root Road's Christian pop sound blends melodic vocal harmonies, with familiar elements found in both past and present popular music to create a unique and uplifting sound.

The band’s self produced sophomore EP entitled “I Am Here” is reminiscent of an earlier era, with familiar influences from popular artists of the 70’s. In keeping with their upbeat music, the group chose to write optimistic songs that provide a refreshing alternative to popular music that is normally birthed out of negative feelings, broken relationships, and selfish behavior. In direct contrast with this trend, Root Road’s heartwarming, God-inspired lyrics convey a positive outlook on life with songs about unfailing love, hope, peace and answers to life’s many problems.

All brothers, the members of Root Road were born into an interracial family; thus their multicultural look. The band believes their global look has allowed their music to transcend racial lines. In a world of different cultural interpretations, the band feels the need to share their music with anyone who will listen, as opposed to conforming to one ethnic group or another.

Family has and continues to be a strong influence on their lives and songwriting. Originally from Lorain, Ohio, the brothers grew up in a musically oriented Christian home where singing, songwriting and performing were all seen as an expression of love and worship to God. The youngest three of seven siblings, each member of Root Road makes their own unique contribution to song development creating a fusion of rock, pop and soul in their music and style.

John, the oldest of the three, plays rhythm guitar, shares lead vocals and introduces modern rock influences to the mix. Anthony supports the group with backup vocals and catchy keyboard, piano, and organ. Nathanael, the youngest, plays harmonica and tambourine and injects everything from a retro soul to a playful pop. He also shares the lead vocals with John.

The brother’s musical journey as a group began early in the 2000’s when under the management of their father, a former professional entertainer; they formed a band called G3 BAND. Their band initially performed at local festivals, schools, and regional events including performing at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland as a finalist in the Northeastern Ohio Christian Talent Competition.

After each of the band members completed college they decided to take a step in faith, and relocate to Nashville, Tennessee under the new band name, Root Road. This move would allow the band to transition into a full-time ministry which would broaden their audience and reach out to more than those in their hometown.

The name Root Road is derived from a couple of elements. Literally, it was the street that all of them grew up on, but to the band it has become more than just familiar stomping grounds. To them Root Road symbolizes the spiritual quest to find connection, security and life.

Lyrics

By Your Side

Written By: Anthony, John and Nathanael Gilkes

Verse 1: Here’s my fortune take Your portion of my life today/ I don’t care if I loose it all cause I’ll gain it back someday/ The things of this world are fading but I know You’ll never change/ Chorus: I want to be by Your side/ I want to be the vessel in which you reside/ I want to hold Your hand and walk quietly/ Together You and me/ Verse 2: I’m not worthy of Your mercy/ But You still call me a friend/ And though the heavens were unreachable You died to let me in/ I didn’t ask for this great love/ But You gave it so freely/ Chorus:// Bridge: What exists without You/ That can make me feel the same/ And when I feel I’m empty/ I’m full when I call your name/ Chorus Out://

Someone

Written By: John, Nathanael and Anthony Gilkes

Verse 1: When I wake up in the morning I feel so good/ Want to take a stroll around the neighborhood/ I am someone/ Yeah/ I am smiling all the time/ I feel that I am on cloud nine/ I am someone/ And I want to say Chorus: Hey yeah yeah/ Yeah yeah yeah/ I am/ I am someone/ Verse 2: People try to judge how much I’m worth/ But based on my looks and my pocketbook/ I am no one/ I’m a child of the Most High/ Because God sent His Son to die I am someone/ And I’ve got to say/ Chorus:// Bridge: Although some may think I’m vain/ I will do my best to explain/ Because God gave me worth/ I can say that I am now someone/ Chorus Out://

Masterpiece

Written By: Root Road

Verse 1: There are times I feel no good/ and unworthy of Your love for me/ I start to think about my past/ and how I broke Your heart before/ But then I hear your voice inside/ You tell me I am not who I used to be/ You say
Chorus: You are My masterpiece/ I made you specially for Me/ for Me/ You are My workmanship/ You I am so proud to see/ because I made you for Me/
Verse 2: And when I hear your soft sweet voice/ I know I will be okay/ Because I know You never lie/ I know You mean it when You tell me/ Chorus://
Bridge: Nothing could ever separate you from My love/ Not height nor depth not anything/ I love you as if you were My only child/ I promise I will always be there/ Chorus Out://

Time

Written By: Nathanael Gilkes

Verse I:
It's twelve o'clock start to look at my watch/ I'm still laying in bed/ Oh its 2:22 I've got nothing to do and I'm feeling like lead/ Well it's 4:24 I start to head out the door I'll be late to my job/ Well I hope and I pray for an easy work day as I'm turning the knob/

Chorus:
Time, Time, Time/ Is passing me by/ Bye, bye/ I go day to day/ I throw it away/ And when I loose it's gone, gone, gone/ I gotta make up my mind, mind, mind/ I can't hit rewind/ no, no/ Will spend my hours smelling the flowers or making them grow/

Verse II:
Driving down the road I got stuck/ I called a man in a truck to come tow me to town/ We had friendly conversation about our life's occupations and our different home towns/ he said boy you look young/ you've got room to have fun but don't waist too much time/ He said take it from me/ last week I was 23 now I am/ I am 49/

Bridge:
Tell me why oh why do I try/ to slow down the hands of time/ I can't be afraid to live/ I got things to do I gotta life to live oh/

Christmas Time

Written By: John, Anthony and Nathanael Gilkes

Verse I:
This Joyous season comes round every year/ It makes us want to sing/ Peace on earth and good will to all men/ Why can't this feeling stay/

Chorus:
Come on it's Christmas time/ Yeah it's Christmas time/ It's Christmas time again/ Whoa Oh It's Christmas time/ It's Christmas time/ And everything is jingle all the way/ Have a merry Christmas/

Verse II:
Colored lights hung up around the square/ There's goodness in the air/ Even though the snow is chilly here/ I'm warm when you are near/

Chorus:
It's Christmas time/ Yeah it's Christmas time/ It's Christmas time again/ Whoa Oh It's Christmas time/ It's Christmas time/ And everything is jingle all the way/ Have a merry Christmas/ (Repeat)
