Bio

Rory Grubb has been active both on the Irish circuit and internationally for the past 5 years. He played his first gig in his second year at college in Dublin, and one year later was offered a deal to record an album at the newly completed Viva Music Studios in Limerick. Quitting college to focus on recording and producing this debut album (Joining The Dots, 2005), he bravely decided to follow his music, rather than a safe career in architecture.
The album’s 10 songs featured intricate guitar playing and softly-sung, modern lyrics. Following recording was a year of intensive touring which circumnavigated Ireland several times and sent him to North By North East, Canada’s biggest music festival. The album was received well both in Ireland and Canada, and sales earned him just enough cash to buy some basic studio equipment.

With wanderlust he packed his bags for London, and following a random ad in the paper he landed in a house full of professional musicians, fortunately injecting him directly into an underground music scene and giving him access to a wealth of musical talent and experience.
While in London he began to produce experimental recordings, and worked hard innovating acoustic guitar techniques, sending his music in a new and interesting direction. He played solo on the London circuit in whatever bars would pay him. Meanwhile his guitar playing was made use of by other bands which took him to play all around the UK and later in Spain.

After an intensive year in London - due to a lack of funds - he decided to move back to Ireland, landing in a derelict stone cottage in Co. Offaly. Together with a group of artists, he set up a creative community in the wilderness and renovated the house into a studio. Here his experimental recordings and guitar style continued developing into an intricate panorama which he now weaves through his self-penned songs.

24 year-old Grubb is now regularly performing this music, and his multi-instrumental live shows employ live sampling and stunning musicianship to share the songs that have grown over these travels. This year has already seen fine performances in Dublin (Whelan’s, Boom Boom Room, Balcony TV), Kilkenny, Inishbofin, Tralee, and a brief Spanish tour. Grubb will be playing at the Green Gathering Festival in August and the Fringe Festival in September. His self-recorded second album will be released later this year.

In recent years it seems anyone with a note in their head and some self-esteem has jumped upon the great songwriting bandwagon, leaving Ireland awash with legions of singer-songwriters and sub-genres of essentially similar acoustic music.
But in this landscape you’re blessed if your work differs from the overbearing norm, giving you an identity outside an isolated scene.

Rory Grubb is a modern musician and goes far beyond the open-mic style singer-songwriters that Ireland cultivates. His experimental approach offers a unique and intriguing live performance that pushes the boat out in terms of present day folk music.
