Bio

Born and raised in Richmond, VA, Douglas Powell –artistically known as- Roscoe Burnems has been writing all his life, but didn’t start to share his work until his senior year of high
school. Inspired by hip-hop, Burnems has always had a desire to impact hearts
with passion and a knack for public speaking. He since has been alongside some the worlds’ most popular poets and artists from Talaam Acey to John Blake. Performing everywhere from North Carolina,
to New York to California. Making his biggest success as a “Slam poet”, Roscoe B
has competed nationally, both individually and with a team, with Slam Richmond and
helped his team place 3rd at a southern regional competition, affectionately called “Southern
Fried” (2009). He has done a brief college circuit through the Virginia area: Virginia Union University, Virginia State University, VCU, and Virginia Tech.
At the end of the day it’s about the message. Roscoe speaks with the perfect blend of common sense, eccentricity and passion. His poetry is designed to make people question tradition, become more tolerant of our differences, lift self-esteems, and provoke thought. He constantly places his vulnerable moments on stage as an example that you can overcome anything from failures to suicidal attempts. "I know what pain feels like, especially as a youth, I don’t want others to go through what I went through.” Roscoe is the next generation of poets who feel they can literally change the world.
