""...Rose Wintergreen’s beautiful songwriting style is a true treat to listen to and her stunning vocal ability warms every cockle of the heart...""

Within the debut EP of Sydney’s Rose Wintergreen, a small description states that the tracks that are to follow represent “…warm chocolate mud cake in musical form.” That would have to be the most accurate description of Warm Chocolate Heart possible, as the entire set of tracks are warm in tone and sweet in style, especially with the use of delightful instruments like the ukulele and violin.

Lonely Planet, the focus track on the EP, contains a strong female vocal harmony, layered over soft, ukulele picking and occasionally adding some cello and violin unison to intensify the depth of the track. Wintergreen’s vocals unfold the story of travelling the heart of another. With only 3 different lines throughout the track, it may seem like a lack of creativity was used when writing, but in fact, the repetition adds another element of desire that the composer wished to convey.

A personal favourite track would be the opener Box, which expresses the story of a break-up from the “dumped” female perspective. Wintergreen uses satirical and audacious phrases throughout this track, which adds an amount of humour to add a silver lining to the dark cloud of relationship issues, “I know I’m mad, but I’m the best sex you ever had.” Although the song is written about a stereotypically sad event in ones life, Wintergreen has manipulated the situation to sound positive and happy through the use of sudden, bright, bouncing chords played on the ukulele and melodica within the verses and chorus of the track.

Rose Wintergreen’s beautiful songwriting style is a true treat to listen to and her stunning vocal ability warms every cockle of the heart and proves within this 5-track EP why she is such an asset to the growing Australian independent music scene and should continue to create such masterpieces as seen within Warm Chocolate Heart. - The Dwarf

"So sweet"

So sweet and so soft. Simple melody, genuine lyrics and a great overall sound. This one has me rocking in my chair and keeping me from writing - because it's so easy to get caught up into and forget what you're doing! - Dirty Rooster

"A gorgeous voice."

A gorgeous voice. - Clare Bowditch

"Deeply touching emotions underpin lush vocals"

It’s with great pleasure that I thoroughly recommend this gorgeous EP, which is a great accompaniment to reflective Sunday afternoons. Warm Chocolate Heart is simply chock-a-block full of lush, emotive songs. Box is a ukulele-driven, cutesy number with the classic line, “I know I’m a bit mad / But I’m the best sex you’ve ever had.” Butterfly has an eerie feel with heart-wrenching lyrics about a suffocating relationship. Take Me To The Place is a slow-paced, melancholy tune with aching vocals. The EP’s first single, Lonely Planet, steals the show with its quirky, relatable lyrics and plucky acoustic sound. Demons is wonderfully melodic, with Wintergreen’s rich vocals shining over a mix of uncomplicated guitar and soaring strings. It’s all rounded out by the haunting a cappella vocals in This Place, which lasts for just one short verse. - Victoria Nugent, Rave Magazine

Bio

Rose Wintergreen is an enigmatic, softly-spoken powerhouse of a woman – a songstress whose unsettling directness and incredibly moving stories are fuelled by a complicated personal history, a fierce set of principles and a strong empathy for the suffering of others.

Her debut EP ‘Warm Chocolate Heart’, was produced by ARIA Award-winning legend Magoo and inspired by the sense of wellbeing generated by timely indulgence in the ultimate comfort food, warm chocolate mudcake. The metaphor sits well with her music, with soothing melodies and cathartic lyrics providing warmth and character to her minimalist, intimate arrangements.

Wintergreen’s songs are honest and deeply personal odes to survival and the discovery of unexpected strength – confronting, yet positive, and punctuated with quirky twists that testify to her determination, passion and sense of humour.

‘Warm Chocolate Heart’ is out on 14th October 2010, available digitally through most official online outlets including iTunes. You can also buy the CD via www.rosewintergreen.com. Best enjoyed on a cold winter’s night with a glass of red and a warm mudcake chaser.
