Other Voices has a habit of unearthing a Northern gem for each festival. Soak made the trip down from Derry in 2012, and this year Rosie Carney made a seven-hour journey from Donegal for a 20-minute set. It’s worth the effort.
Carney has a bluesy, winsome charm about her that’s uncommon for a 16-year-old. Here, some nerves in the live broadcast situation are evident when she gets on stage but once she starts playing, the songs take over and her short set takes charming, elegant shape.
Playing a cover in this situation is always a risky business, but Carney takes something as familiar and funky as Michael Jackson’s Thriller, decouples the groove and turns it into a haunting, shimmering thing. It pays handsome dividends. - The Irish Times.
Ireland is a treasure chest full of up and coming artists, trying to make it in the music industry and here at Culture Seek, we want to share with you some of the home-grown talent that we find.
Rosie Carney is an 17 year old, singer/songwriter originally from Hampshire, UK but moved to Downings, Co.Donegal at a younger age. Along with being able to play both piano and guitar, Rosie has written and performed over 20 of her own songs.
Rosie's voice is a distinct and unique one which has been described by the Metro Herald as "Adele, only better" and from listening to her work, it's hard to disagree with that description.
"The tiny thing is dwarfed by the guitar she commands, while she herself in turn appears to be an instrument mastered by some unseen player, with a magically effortless voice tuned to perfection", the Metro continues.
Rosie performed on the highly acclaimed RTE show "Other voices" last March. During the show she performed her own, unique version of Michael Jackson's mega- hit "Thriller" and to put it one way, she nailed it. Her cover of the song is eerily beautiful and changes the whole dynamic of the song.
Rosie is definitely an up and coming artist to look out for in the future and Culture Seek would like to wish her the best in her career. If you want to check out some of Rosie's work (and I highly recommend you do) you can do so through her soundcloud account and on YouTube. - Official Culture Seek
