"Van Stom managing Royal Chant"

++Van Stom managing Royal Chant++

Justin van Stom's Artist Mgmt have added Port Macquarie garage folk indie act Royal Chant. "It's rare to find great poetry combined with great music,” van Stom says. Royal Chant formed this year out of the ashes of sickboy. Guitarist singer Mark Spence, from Georgia, USA, chased an Aussie girl around the world and settled in NSW in 2005.

"Royal Chant: ROXFAM Charity Gig + "Somedays" Video Clip"

Royal Chant, the indie/folk garage band from the wilds of NSW, will be bringing their overdriven songs to help out and headline an Oxfam charity night at the Excelsior Hotel entitled ROXFAM. Used to being the CAUSE of a disaster, the boys from Royal Chant are quite frankly stunned that their passion and poetry can be put to some good use for once. They look forward to sharing the stage with the other acts, including Johnny Zoch, Bastian, and Eli Wolf. All the acts are donating their time and talent free of charge for the night, with ALL proceeds going to Oxfam. It all happens on Thursday, August 20th, at the Excelsior Hotel in Surry Hills, Sydney.

In the days following the event, Royal Chant will be staying in Sydney to shoot the music video for “Somedays”, their second single produced by Wayne Connolly. After their debut single “Coughing Fits” garnered a few spins on Triple-J, “Somedays” took things one step further by getting added to regular rotation, just in time for a series of shows that will see them playing alongside Bluejuice, Roger That, The Protectors, and a full saddlebag of acts at the inaugural Blueprint Festival (VIC) in September.

Royal Chant: Frozen, Filthy, & Filmed….

Royal Chant, the garage band that doesn’t know when to quit, is keeping the fuzzbox ball rolling out there from the wilds of NSW. After happily freezing their collective Tingling Naughty Parts off at this year’s inaugural Blueprint Festival under the crisp Victorian Spring nights (read: FREEZING), they huddled back into their Tarago and trekked back to the warmer surrounds of Albert Studios to splatter some sonic face paint with producer Wayne Connolly and come out with two 2 new singles, both which are set to appear on their upcoming Right On/Write Off EP.

Curious punters can catch a glimpse of the new sounds when the boys take the stage at the Annandale Hotel as part of the all day Filth Fest happening on Saturday, October 10th. Royal Chant are appearing near the end of the evening, amongst a line-up that includes Calling All Cars, The Protectors, Red Ink, and many, many more.

And finally, for those who have NO idea who or what we are talking about, they can get a cinematic sampling by viewing the newely released debut video for “Somedays”. A joint collaboration between Triple-J Unearthed and NIDA, the song was given visual life under director Netta Yashchin. - Music Feeds

"Sickboy Finds Cure"

Sickboy is a terrific three-man Aussie band we've featured on LV a couple times in the past. Royal Chant is an equally-terrific three-man Aussie band...well, that's because it used to be Sickboy. After tiring of dealing with international mindless psychobabble over the name and a number of bands coating the name, Mark Spence rebranded his band Royal Chant. For identity's sake, that's got to be good news for Mark and band mates Andrew Green and Matt Hoare. But the real good news is for those of us that know their music which won't change. It's still awesome music described by the band as "songs that are equal parts truth, lies, garbage, and heart, sounding like pop put through a fuzzbox blender". Still possessing some of the best guitar that will dive down your ears, Royal Chant's music draws up comparisons to some R.E.M., Sonic Youth and maybe even a little Nirvana. But this band truly has their own identity in their music, and no matter the name as long as they continue to pump out music like this, people will know who they are. For your listening pleasure, pre- and post-Sickboy music. - Local Vertical Music Blog (USA)

Bio

What doesn’t kill us takes a long time to make us stronger. It’s a statement that the four individuals from the mid-north coast of New South Wales who comprise Royal Chant bid you consider well, through the ten tracks of their debut album RAISE YOUR GLASS & COLLAPSE.

The album has been a labour of love for Royal Chant. Like a fine wine, the songs (and sometimes the band) required a lot of beating, stomping-on and being kept in the dark to mature, but the result is an impressive collection of tracks, indicative of the human condition – barbaric, sometimes chaotic, but mostly beautiful. Though framed in intelligent and skillful sounds, the songs are subtle and simple in substance. They are an invitation to be vulnerable; to share love, doubt, anger, loss, resignation, being human, and being less-than human – as complicated or straightforward as you want them to be.

The first track from the album is ‘Ghosts’. Indicative of the band’s exceptional indie rock sensibilities, the song is sharp and to the point, driven by writer/lead vocalist Mark Spence’s raspy vocals and arcane lyrics. Shot at THE VANGUARD in Newtown, Sydney, on a limited budget with a whole lot of imagination, the video for ‘Ghosts’ is a triumph of creativity over tight wallets and a testament to the band’s determination to deliver substance with style.

Following a string of East Coast dates throughout January including a support slot with You Am I, Royal Chant will hit the road this February to a number of shows in Melbourne, Sydney and Port Macquarie, including a 3 week residency at Sydney’s Oxford Arts Factory.

Listen to Royal Chant now! And see them live in February.
