Biography

Royce Bouknight has steadily developed as an accomplished Bassist since his mid-teens. His fluent musical influences include Gospel, Contemporary Jazz, Funk and R&B. Royce is a self taught bassist who began playing bass on his father's guitar. Mimicking many of the bass greats of the 70's & 80's, Royce continued to sharpen his skills through long hours of practice and sacrifice. It was in Massachusetts where Royce began playing bass every Sunday morning in church where his father was Pastor. Royce's desire to play drove him to seek out other churches, choirs and groups just for an opportunity to play. While in college he began playing with the Salvation Corporation, a popular Gospel Ensemble in Boston. After a short tenure in the military, Royce returned to Washington, DC, his bithplace, and was introduced to the art of engineering and production. Royce enthusiastically welcomed the new challenges and zealously cultivated his newly acquired skills. He dove head first into the DC music scene where he began to flourish. A quick study on bass and "big ears" in the studio, Royce soon became a highly sought after talent and is currently an engineer and musician at four recording studios in the DC metropolitan area. Royce is constantly recording tracks ranging from Hip-Hop to Gospel, from Jazz to Pop, from Blues to Alternative and almost everything in between. Royce has been heavily involved in Christian music for much of his career. His exposure to many styles of music has afforded him the opportunity to perform a wide range of musical genres. The many influences that have shaped Royce's sound and style will be evident as you listen to the variying flavors of his music. This exposure has been the invaluable catalyst for Royce to perform with, record or produce many recording artists including Richard Smallwood, Dorothy Norwood, Myrna Summers, Joe Jackson, Bunny & El DeBarge, Barbara Roy Gaskins, Lorree Slye, Maurette Brown Clarke, David Griffiths, Kevin Gray, Inspectah Deck of the Wu Tan Clan, Monique Steele, Duane Moody of Three Mo Tenors and many more. More recently Royce anchored a quartet opening for Willy Jolly at a community fund raiser. Winning numerous Billboard awards as well as The Maryland State Arts Council's Individual Artist Award in Music Composition and a standing ovation performance at the world famous Appolo Theatre with his brothers, Royce is a proven well rounded artist and musician. Royce's accomplishments have also been recognized by his peers and are a testament to his dedication to musical excellence.
