"Roy Powell’s Solace"

four stars) Roy Powell’s Solace (Nagel Heyer) works the angles of a song’s potential, this time with even more emphasis on the tone, mood and space,The title track, a slow-as-molasses melody that combines thick lines with fluid ones, is pretty without being syrupy. With sensitive support from bassist Terje Gewelt and drummer Jarle Vespestad. Powell’s set of nine originals resists the bebop urge to blow, instead remaining as calm as an easygoing river. Some may find the tempos and the sometimes cloying expressions maddening if not indulgent. Powell’s long form melodics and seeming waywardness is most creative and refreshing on tunes like “Another Time Another Place”, “ Loves’s Circles” and the relatively uptempo , Latin flavoured “My Beatrice”

"All About Jazz"

Solace came in through the mail slot with two strikes against it: an unfamiliar leader and a program of all originals. Too often, this turns out to be a bad combination – an ego fest of little musical interest – but for once, it was a happy surprise. Pianist/composer Roy Powell is better-known in Europe; born in England in 1965, he was trained there and later moved to Oslo. Powell has worked with Anthony Braxton, Art Farmer, and Vince Mendoza, has written for the ballet, and has led his own groups since 1995; he cites his major influences as Keith Jarrett, Chick Coreea, and Bud Powell. His web site hints at his eclecticism, listing recordings of free and electric jazz, as well as compositions for the ballet; his North by Northwest was hailed as the Best Jazz CD of 2001 by amazon.co.uk.
Solace is Powell's fourth CD under his own name, with a stated mission to ”bring hope in a time of pain and grief. It is my belief,” Powell writes, ”that in such times as these, the need for beauty is greater than ever. The quiet, simple voice speaks loudly...” All very true, and again, in other hands this might turn into a noble excuse for aimless noodling. Solace is dreamy but not drifting: there's structure, melody and dynamic flow to its nine lovely compositions, starting with the title track, where bassist Terje Gewelt's use of spaces adds to the sensation of gentle rocking. The repeating left-hand figures in “Love's Circles” express its hopeful continuity, while “Rendezvous” has just a hint of salsa in its relaxed swing. There's a classical/impressionistic feel to much of Solace, especially on the lovely solo piece “Nymphs.”
The CD closes on a hopeful note with a medium bossa and some hand drumming from the fine and subtle Jarle Vespestad. Apart from some over-bassing here and there (mostly on tracks 2 and 3), this is a very soothing CD – an ideal soundtrack for a rainy Sunday afternoon, or after a hard day at work. Solace: exactly.

This is music from the heart and it encourages contemplation and finer thoughts in the listener. It’s also refreshing to hear such simple affecting playing from one so young.

"HENRY’S JAZZ CELLAR, EDINBURGH"

ROY POWELL ****
HENRY’S JAZZ CELLAR, EDINBURGH

WHERE would this city be without Henry’s? The management’s commitment to bringing diverse and challenging performers to our attention paid dividends again with this night of sublime subterranean jazz from Oslo-based Roy Powell.

What do you get when you cross an Englishman, a Scotsman and a Norwegian? A curious blend of muted melodies and a tonal diversity that highlights the trio’s European roots. Powell’s classical training was evident in his controlled phrasing in Nymphs, a mellifluous paean to those mythological figures that didn’t drown in sentiment.

In bassist Frode Berg, Nordic jazz’s great white hope, we witnessed a true rising talent, his finger gymnastics on the appropriately titled Seat Of Your Pants leaving the crowd frazzled, while at the same time bringing out the best in local boy Stuart Ritchie, whose drumming kept things ticking over with solo flourishes that moved seamlessly from the bombastic to the tender.

On piano, Powell had all the confidence you look for in the lead role, yet he never let his undoubted prowess carry him down esoteric avenues, nor did he feel the need to rein in his cohorts (though on the evidence of their performances I doubt he could have). The only thing that detracted from the evening was the turn-out, as this kind of work really did deserve a much better showing.

Bio

This new trio comprises of an Englishman, a Norwegian and a Bulgarian who have so far played Hønefoss Jazz festival, local gigs in Oslo and a gig in Tours, France. The band marks a return to Jazz-Rock roots for Powell with the vintage sound of Fender Rhodes electric piano, Moog analog synthesizer and clavinet together with fonky bass and drums. Featuring original tunes by Powell the trio produces a varied soundscape of electric and lesser used acoustic instruments such as acoustic bass guitar, melodica etc. Powell often uses three or more keyboard instruments sometimes simultaneously.
