"RUBEE BLACKRIVER TO RELEASE DEBUT RECORD"

Voice of the people, and according to Chicago Sun Times celebrity columnist Bill Zwecker, “a local light;” these are just a couple of titles bestowed upon spoken word musician, Rubee BlackRiver. The multi-faceted artist is preparing to release his first solo record after years of sharing his words, stories and love of music, from the tour buses, planes, even a camel!

This genre bending talent is no stranger to the entertainment industry. His career as personal tour manager with Grammy award winning hip-hop group Digable Planets, and assistant to actor Keith David & Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding Jr., Wood Harris, has given Rubee the knowledge and passion for the creative arts.

It was in Brooklyn that BlackRiver discovered his love for spoken word and spent many nights performing at the now-infamous Brooklyn Moon Café and Frank’s Place, with the likes of Lauryn Hill, and many other of hip-hop’s greats.

In 2000 BlackRiver composed music for a feature film, “At Face Value,” securing his standing as a professional composer and writer with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers.

BlackRiver’s sound has been compared to the likes of Mutu Baraku, Tracy Chapman, Saul Williams and Bob Dylan, to name a few. His travels and performances in the U.S. and abroad have helped to merge his passion for sound and poetry with his desire of universal change and equality. Armed with his guitar, bass, drums and even a flute, BlackRiver is ready to unleash his story and take listeners on a meaningful adventure.

“I see my music as a way to share my personal stories about my personal journeys and my views of the world,” says BlackRiver.

Born and raised outside of Chicago, IL of West African slave and Cherokee ancestry, BlackRiver had his first taste of music at an early age surrounded by a family of artists. Growing up he was known for his poetry and music, winning a number of prestigious performance artist awards and accolades. His first big leap into the music industry came when he moved to New York City in the early 90s and established a reputation amid the budding Brooklyn underground music scene.

His upcoming debut record, Cowboys, Slaves and Indians will blend spoken word poetry with acoustic folk, blues, and hip-hop sounds to create a soul stirring, unforgettable sound. His vocals and lyrical content speak of universal human struggle and the desire for peace, rooted in current and ancestral value.
