Biography

Ruby Gartenberg is a singer/songwriter/composer and a recent high school graduate from Berkeley, California. Ruby has been involved in rigorous musical training since the age of seven, beginning with classical piano training and vocal technique classes. Being exposed to a wide array of musical genres, she developed a unique vocal sound, incorporating eccentric vocal embellishments influenced by jazz, blues, and opera sounds, into acoustic pop music. Currently, she resides in Berkeley, California, taking musical instruction from piano virtuoso, William Beatty, accomplished jazz pop artist, Stephanie Bruce, and talented bassist and music historian, Fred Randolph, to refine her knowledge of music theory and develop her technique and composition skills. Ruby is also an avid supporter and active member of the San Francisco electronic dance music scene, now expanding her own compositions to include the sounds of house, dubstep, and trip hop. In the future, Ruby plans to attend Point Blank Music College and the Institute of Contemporary Music Performance in London, England and hopes to pursue a career as a recording and performing artist.

A Room With a View

Written By: Ruby Gartenberg

A room with a view
The only thing I see is you
When I shut the blinds
Only you cross my mind

The curtains closed and nobody knows
Touching with eyes closed
The curtains open and you’re exposed
I suppose

Don’t let go so quickly
This is the start of the end
Fight for me, so simply
Never fall from the edge

Deep down, I know
Will you hold me to blame?
Outside, I’ve grown
Will you love me the same?

Witness the darkness at noon
Make love the joke of the cruel
Take chances you’ll seldom regret
Maybe pretend we’ve never met

And even when the sky is falling
I still think of you
And even when my heart is drowning
My soul misses you

Don’t let go, so quickly
This is the start of the end
Fight for me, so simply
Never fall from the edge

Deep down, you know
Will I hold you to blame?
Inside, you’ve grown
Will I love you the same?

The first thing and the last thing I’ll know
Seasons may change but you and I won’t
Nothing can seem to keep us together
But we’ll bear the stormy weather

A room without a view
I no longer can see you
When I open the blinds
You still remain on my mind

Slaves to Heartbreak

Written By: Ruby Gartenberg

I've caught you red handed
I trapped you in a lie
I pretended not to notice but
I promise to make you cry

Nothing you can say can help you right now
All these words I'm hearing I won't allow
Taking bitter feelings into account
I bet you're praying and wishing this won't slip out

Slaves to heartbreak
What a pair they make
Precautions you must take
To truly spot a fake

I spied you together last night
I purposefully denied your presence
I let you catch my eye
I guarantee this won't be pleasant

Everything you do will hurt her somehow
All these things you've said up until now
Taking my revenge into account
I'm waiting, anticipating her sickening doubt

Slaves to heartbreak
What a pair they make
Precautions you must take
To truly spot a fake

And just when you think you've gotten away
I'll catch you and convince you to stay
Just when you believe you've caught a new prey
You better watch out for the games I'll play

Slaves to heartbreak
What a pair they make
Precautions you must take
To truly spot a fake

Identify a fake
Lovely pair they make
Struggle through another heartbreak
This time, it's your heart I'll take

Empire of Light

Written By: Ruby Gartenberg

Nothing short of paradise
Since you came in to this life of mine
Love and I couldn’t see eye to eye
But I knew a soul like yours was hard to come by

Because the sun fell and the shadows came
And it was all so lost until you called my name
Illuminated by the midnight sun
I felt inside my heart, our story just begun

If I asked you if you could be mine
Would you show me the empire of light?
If you held my hand in yours, cured my fears I felt before
Could you shield me in your arms tonight?

You’re the sweetest gift I’ll ever know
Deliver me to a place that feels like home
I’d sworn time and time again, time and time again
You made me believe, you’re my lover and a friend

Under moonlight, only by the night
Not a worry in my mind, your angel smile within my sight
A single moment when every star aligns
I hope you’ll notice the spark in between our eyes

If I asked you if you could be mine
Would you show me the empire of light?
If you held my hand in yours, cured my fears I felt before
Could you shield me in your arms tonight?

And I feel the magic in the air
Hear our music everywhere
And I will look towards the sunrise
Lover’s divine

Nothing short of paradise
Since you came in to this life of mine

Set List

Original compositions such as:
Can't Say No
A Room With a View
Slaves to Heartbreak
After Hours
Sinking Ships
Dream Soldier
The Joker
Blind
Like The Movies
Blackout

+ various covers upon request.

My set list definitely depends on the crowd. If the audience is made up of a younger set, I will typically play more covers of popular music and put my own spin on it. For example, my cover of 'Black and Gold' by Sam Sparro is performed as a swing feel as opposed to the electronic pop sound the original has. For an older crowd, I tend to lean more towards the jazz side of things, mixing in more standards and classics with contemporary pieces. My original songs are usually the only pieces that remain the same in each of my set lists since they are creative and current enough to please the youth but mature and versatile enough to appeal to an older audience. I'll cover anything from Amy Winehouse to 30 Seconds to Mars to Keane to Lady Gaga to Alicia Keys to Kings of Leon but sti
