"Interview with Ruby Randall"

Christmas Eve calls for something special, even if I don't really care about this evening and it's mostly just Saturday night. It's pretty much impossible not to make Christmas a little special these days and I don't mind spending my next two days with family & good friends, so it's all good. Just like the EP "Untill The Dust Settles" Ruby Randall released this year, it's all good. Although I'm planning on posting my Best EPs of 2011-list somewhere this weekend, I don't mind spreading the word on that number one spot that Ruby Randall has had for most of the year. She has written 4 extremely relaxing songs that'll suit any moment of the day, night, week, month or year. This is one of those albums that doesn't ask for a moment to fit into, it creates that moment. Without a doubt the finest EP i've heard this year & that makes it extra special to have a little interview with Ruby Randall about what the previous year has brought her.

If you had to name one moment, what would you consider your highlight of 2011?

Firstly, just having the courage to get up and play my music for people. Prior to this year, i'd sang harmonies with friends of mine live, but was always too afraid to play any of my own stuff.

Also - meeting with Scott and Jeff at the Second Cup in Guelph for the first time. They told me that they wanted to record me, and have me join the othersongs family. I felt really good about both of them, and knew that I wanted to make music with them, too. After we finished the recording process, Scott took me for a drive in his car, and we listened to the EP. Definitely a highlight for me. I felt both humbled and grateful that everything in my life had lined up just so, leading me to that moment.

What are you doing at the moment (november 2011)?

Currently, I am hanging out in Tapotzlan, Mexico - studying yoga with a few friends of mine. Heading home in a short 5 days!

Which great band or artist did you discover yourself in 2011?

Discovered this year, and fell in love with Austra, Qauntic and The Boom Boom's.

Any favourite albums?

Currently have Feist's new album on repeat. Also the soundtrack from Brother Where Art Thou.

How will you celebrate New Year’s Eve?

Not sure yet. Would love to be at my cottage, with family and friends - drinking wine in a tealight-lit snowfort.

What are your plans for the new year?

Planning to move to Toronto in January and am hoping to be playing shows with friends in the new year. Have written a few new songs over the past 6 months, while hanging out on the West Coast and in Mexico. Am excited to see how they evolve. Ideally, i'd like to be playing as many live shows as possible, lots of collaborating, and perhaps exploring other sides to my musical personality, beyond folk. - Plug in Baby

"Ruby Randall - Until the Dust Settles"

This just oozes candlelight. Ruby Randall has a very special, melancholic voice and the gentle songs she has crafted for her debut-EP are pure and beautiful. It's not easy to stand out in the 1000s of girls playing guitar singing your own songs, but for some reason Ruby does stand out. Usually those girls end up as Jewel-wannabees or try and fail, but Ruby Randall has succesfully dodged that bullet and has made a 4-track EP that sticks. That left me wanting more, because it is thát good! - Plug In Baby

"Ruby Randall - Until the Dust Settles"

Translated from German to English:

The Canadian singer-songwriter Ruby Randall released her debut EP titled 'Until The Dust Settles' last month. The songs are beautiful folk pieces, which take you to a Country field. The magnificent voice on this EP makes it especially lovable. Four tracks that could not be more beautiful. Published on one of my personal favorite labels: Other Songs Music Co.

This EP really makes you want more, and has an indescribable charm. Comparable to Cat power & for all those who like it quiet.

There is a video below of the song 'Where To Go,' that last piece of the EP, recorded live off the floor. Great song. Who can not fall in love with it! Get your handkerchiefs out! - Der Impuls

Bio

Ruby Randall - an enchanting songstress with a voice smooth as hell.

Ruby and her band blend elements of folk, soul and pop - creating infectious hooks with undeniable groove. Signed to Othersongs Music Co. in 2011; she released her debut Ep 'Until the Dust Settles' to international acclaim. Netherlands-based music blog, Plug in Baby, named it the number one Ep of 2011; saying: "A very special melancholic voice. The gentle songs she has crafted for her debut-EP are pure and beautiful." German blog, Der Impuls, wrote: "This Ep has an indescribable charm," and compares Ruby to one of her own influences: Cat Power.

Ruby has spent a lifetime engulfed in the musicians' lifestyle. Aside from becoming a seasoned performer from a young age, she's also explored musical directions off-stage. She gained unique insight into the industry with an internship at Toronto renowned label Arts & Crafts. She also enjoyed working as a member of the Hillside Music Festival staff in 2009 and 2010.

Having been surrounded by a musical community all her life, collaboration has always been an important aspect of her musical ideology. The band recently teamed up with producer Liam Sanagan (LUM), - member of Pitchfork touted group First Rate People. The initial recording process for their debut LP is underway, and a video for the single "Don't Sweat it" is set for release in summer 2013.
