Bio

According to Ruby, Summer will always be the yin to her yang. Although the two sisters differ in many ways, there is no denying the harmony they create whenever they open up their hearts and sing. Together, they form Ruby Summer, a salty, beach-pop band bursting with sweet, sweet harmonies.

Ever since Ruby and Summer Spiro can remember, their Southern California home has been filled with music and musicians. This makes sense since both their mother and father are singers, songwriters, musicians, and producers. Summer and Ruby credit their parents, Leslie and Mark, as being their greatest artistic influences. “Our mom was in a band with her sister, Kelly [Bulkin], and their music is incredibly inspirational to us.” “And our father is a brilliant artist and songwriter; he has taught us so much about songwriting, about being honest and truthful in our songs and in our life.”

For years, Ruby and Summer’s dad recorded the girls singing separately in the small recording studio in their garage—a space Summer and Ruby endearingly call the “Little Glitter Box.” But it wasn’t until 2004, after hearing their voices mixed together on a song their dad had recorded, did the two sisters decide to pool their talents and form a band. “When we heard our voices blended and harmonized, it was so cool to us; it just felt right and natural.”

As for songwriting, the girls differ in their approach. Ruby likes to write about real people and actual events in her life. This can be felt clearly in “Breathe,” a slow, thoughtful song about taking a moment to breathe so you don’t lose all control. Summer enjoys writing about fantasy worlds she’d like to live in. For instance, in the upbeat, sun-splashed song “Mermaids and Poets” she sings: “I want to live my life with mermaids and poets/the ones who fly and fall from the stars/‘cause love comes to the people who show it/home is right wherever we are.” It’s within these songs that Ruby and Summer combine their personalities to create music that is both genuine and poetic.

Since Ruby Summer formed in 2004, the girls have shared the stage with large pop acts such as Honor Society and Mitchell Musso. They have also had two songs featured on the soundtrack of the Disney movie Tinker Bell (2008). And on September 3, 2010, the duo signed their first exclusive recording deal with Seany Records. The label hopes to expose the world to the fresh and heartfelt music of Ruby Summer. It’s time to open the Little Glitter Box and let these stars out.
