"Mt.Allison Radio Review"

Rudy Overtones and Undertones
4/5

Rudy's debut album, Overtones and Undertones, is simply one of the best albums to come out of the Maritimes in recent history. From the first kick of Dale Wilson's drums in "Everything I Ever Wanted" until the last melodic note from lead singer Ryan MacDonald's voice in "Faultline", this album is flawless. Along with Jonathon MacDougall's electric guitar and the solid sounds of Matt Campbell's bass, Rudy has successfully done what every rock band desires to do, and put together four amazing musicians who fit seamlessly at all corners.

Overtones and Undertones was skillfully recorded at Riverfront Studios in Pictou County, NS under the watchful eye of prominent Nova Scotian recording artists Dave Gunning and Fred Lays (a.k.a. George Canyon). Already, Overtones and Undertones has received high acclaim from music industry professionals from all over. The fourth song off the album, "Miss You", has been charting all over the Maritimes for almost a year now and was recently given the Maritime's Best Song award by Maritime Grown, a group of industry professionals who accepted over 400 nominations from bands from all over Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island.

This is a deserving award indeed, as "Miss You" will hook listeners from the start with Ryan's slow acoustic guitar, before he lets his voice take over while you get lost in the words and sounds of this song. While "Miss You" slows down the pace of the album, we can leave it to songs like "Simple", "Photograph", and "Intangible" to kick the tempo up a notch. "Miss You" isn't the only song to have received high accolades from prominent professionals. The sixth song on the album, "Hollywood", also took off to the point where it was amongst "the top five votes all year" on Jack Bonaparte's East Coast Countdown.

Despite all the hype surrounding Overtones and Undertones, the quartet takes great pride in its live show, often crediting it as the band's strongest point. Gaining the attention of audiences everywhere with their high energy, diverse sets and enthusiasm, it leaves audiences buzzing after gigs and wanting more. Don't believe me? See them at George's Roadhouse on Friday, November 26 for only $5. Mount Allison Songwriter's Contest winners Telfer are set to open the night.

"Homegrown Win"

Stellarton-based rock band Rudy had something extra to be thankful about over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The group found out over the holiday that they've won the grand prize of the Maritime Grown Band Competition for their original song Miss You.

The song, written by lead singer Ryan MacDonald, 21, was chosen from over 400 song entries by top industry professionals from coast to coast.

The prize includes a professional recording, distribution of their CDs, guaranteed radio airplay, a professionally-produced music video, a photo shoot, a website for one year, marketing and advertising and a meeting with an arts and recording representative.

In total, the prize is valued at more than $40,000.

"All of those things are things we need," explained MacDonald. "They're the things that if we had the money, we'd be doing anyway. They're smart investments and they're just giving them to us."

The winning song will be produced and engineered at the Sonic Temple Recording Studio in Halifax, which has hosted artists like Joel Plaskett, The Ennis Sisters and Willie King since opening its doors in February 2003.

The award winning song will be featured on the first annual CD, titled Maritime Grown 2004, with the release date scheduled for Nov. 20.

"They'll be flying in two producers from the west coast to work on it with us," MacDonald said. "And they're releasing the CD Nov. 20, they're supposed to be releasing a video then, too. So it's all happening really fast. It's like yesterday we weren't doing anything, and the next, we have everything going for us."

Rudy entered the contest last June and heard the news this weekend.

"We were at a practice, writing a new song, when my mom came in and told us we'd gotten the call," he said. "I don't think our drummer, Dale, even knew what it was all about. We entered so long ago we'd put it out of our minds mostly. We were all just stunned, we didn't expect it at all."

Since then, MacDonald said with a chuckle, they've all been a little dazed.

"It hasn't set in yet, I don't think," he said. "It's just overwhelming and really an eye-opener, a boost of confidence in ourselves when we didn't think we had something like this in us. This might be the beginning of the ride for us, and I hope it all pans out – but still, we're rookies in this. Things change on a dime in this business, so we don't want to pin all our hopes on it."

The song, written by MacDonald, expresses all of the feelings he experienced after his girlfriend headed off to university. "I can remember sitting in my living room four years ago, writing this song," MacDonald said. "I didn't have any idea then it would play this kind of part in my life."

He's also unsure what it was about that song that appealed enough to net Rudy the win in the competition.

"I've been asking myself what it is about that song," MacDonald said. "It's my favourite song that I've ever written, but I can't put my finger on what it is about it. It's just something people can identify with, I suppose."

The CD launch party will be held at Stage-Nine in Halifax next month and will include performances by the winning band and additional artists from the CD.

As well as Rudy's Miss You, the CD will be a compilation of the top 15 songs submitted to the competition, including second place band The Middleclass Pushovers with The Rain in Spain and third place band Real with The Chase.

"MIANS Showcase"

Stellarton-based rock band Rudy has been selected to perform a showcase at Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia's Music Week in November. Several Pictou County groups will be hitting the stage in Halifax to perform showcases at the Music Industry Association of Nova Scotia's Music Week.

Stellarton-based rockers Rudy, along with Pictou folk artist Dave Gunning, have been invited to perform during the weekend's festivities, which will be held at the Delta Halifax from Nov. 18–21.

"We're really excited," said Ryan MacDonald, Rudy's lead singer. "From what we hear, we're getting a 20-minute timeslot, so we're going to have to put everything we can into that time. We'll have to pick our best stuff and prepare as best we can."

Rudy, which released its album Overtones and Undertones in August 2003, is hoping that this will be an opportunity to promote their music and get a better foothold in the industry.

"There are people from all over the industry at these showcases," MacDonald said. "It's a really good place to network and meet people."

Also slated to perform showcases are Joel Plaskett, Gordie Sampson, Alma Latina, Amy Campbell, Andrea England, Caledonia, Delores Boudreau, Eric Angus Whyte, Ermine, Jamie Junger, Little Miss Moffat, Madhat, Meaghan Smith, Rose Cousins, The Danny Mainstreet Band and Tyler Messick.

Sharing the stage with such well-established acts is a little intimidating, however, MacDonald said.

"It'll be fun, but it's a little bit of pressure, too," he said. "You've got to play with the big boys."

In conjunction with the event, RendezVous Folk 2004 will be held that weekend as well. Artists selected to showcase as part of RendezVous Folk! 2004 include Al Tuck (PEI), Amelia Curran (NL), Andy Stochansky (ON), Anne Louise Genest (YT), Beolach (NS), Birchmountain Bluegrass Band (NS), Chantal Vitalis (AB), Duane Andrews (NL), El Viento Flamenco (NS), Enoch Kent (ON), Isaac & Blewett (NB), Joel Fafard (SK), La Part du Queteux (PQ), Mary Jane Lamond (NS), Nathan Wiley (PEI), Shtreiml (ON), The Wailin Jennys (MB) and Umanz (PQ).

Bio

After the success of their demo release in 2002 engineered by Dave Gunning, RUDY returned to Riverfront Studios in 2003 and over a six month period recorded their debut album "Overtones and Undertones" with producer and engineer Fred Lays, aka Universal Records, George Canyon. Canyon, a mentor of the bands, contributed greatly to shape the RUDY songs into another dimension and truly helped to bring the band to another level of musicianship and professionalism.

Since launching their debut album "Overtones and Undertones", Pictou County, Nova Scotia based rock band RUDY have embarked on a workmanlike effort, steadily touring the Maritimes since the albums release. With an invitation from ESP Productions RUDY played at the 2004 Alexander Keith's Halifax Summerfest, playing the festival with such acts as Crush, Joel Plaskett & The Trews. The band has also had the honor of playing at the 2003 and 2004 award winning New Glasgow Riverfront Jubilee infront of their hometown crowd. Playing on the same stage as Wide Mouth Mason, Harry Manx, Crush and Joel Plaskett. RUDY was also selected to play at a showcase for the 2004 MIANS Nova Scotia Music Week and was featured on the NSMW Compilation CD with "Intangible".

In the fall of 2004 it was announced that RUDY's single "Miss You" had won the Maritime Grown Competition being selected from over 400 song entries by top industry professionals from coast to coast.

With a growing fan base in HRM and beyond and the type of buzz that accompanies a young and hard working rock and roll band on the move, RUDY is attracting industry attention, receiving airplay nation-wide with singles "Miss You", "Hollywood" and "Simple" on major radio stations such as CHUM'S C100, Q104, The East Coast Countdown and topping charts in sales as well as a number one spot on the East Coast Kitchen Racket, voted by the public. An amazing six out of the eleven recorded tracks have all had major radio airplay, the album is truly a favorite among music/program directors, hosts and music fans.

RUDY combines the talents of singer/guitarist Ryan MacDonald, guitarist Jonathan MacDougall, bassist Matt Campbell and drummer Dale Wilson. The quartet takes great pride in it's live show often crediting it as the bands strongest point. Gaining the attention of audiences everywhere with their high-energy, diverse sets and enthusiasm, leaving audiences buzzing after gigs and wanting more.

The band remains independent at this point and continue to work hard at achieving their goals and succeeding in the music industry.

"Rudy's debut CD is nothing short of impressive. The songs are well-written, the production first-rate and over-all the material is far more mature than any out-of-the-gate recording deserves to be. Every song on the CD deserves to be heard on the radio and could work on any number of formats. It's the CD that has been in my player for the past week."

"Rudy is a band to watch! Overtones and Undertones is one of the best CD's I've received this year. Their single Hollywood was in the top five for overall votes received for our countdown this year!"
- Jack Bonaparte

"Rudy have done the almost un-thinkable for an up and coming band on their debut disc...broken through to the notoriously tight playlists of Halifax radio! Catchy songwriting and great hooks add up to an act that we'll be hearing a lot from in the future!"
