"Local Musician Spotlight: Rudy Love Jr and Bob Henderson"

Local Musician Spotlight: Rudy Love Jr
By Sara Goertz
Wednesday, 20 October 2010

This Thursday may be your last chance to hear Urban Pop artist Rudy Love Jr. performing in Hutch. Over the past 4 years Rudy has been performing solo as well as a member of several Wichita bands such as Rudy Love and the Love Family, Natural Selection and Tony Ngo and the Step Brothers, to name a few. Usually playing keyboard and or lead vocals he creates infectious energy that carries the music to all present.

Depending on his accompaniment and the venue he plays anywhere from all original to all covers but usually keeps it at about a 50/50 ratio. Knowing how to play to the crowd Rudy characterizes his sets as “feel good music that hopefully has something for everyone”.

Next week, Rudy along with fellow musician and friend Waira Njoroge, will be moving to Los Angeles to try their hands at that music scene. To hear Rudy live and wish him luck in California catch him at Third Thursday performing with Tony Ngo at Smith’s Market from 5-8pm then at the Third Thursday Afterglow party at the W from 9pm-12am. *no cover*

Bio

I was born in Denver, CO, and raised in Wichita, KS. I come from a family of musicians. My great grandfather Robert Love, wrote one of the most coverd rock songs of all times,"Good Morning Little School Girl". My own father, Rudy Love, Sr. has recorded, and played with many legends including Ray Charles, Stevie Wonder, and Marvin Gaye, but is likely best known for his many years as musical director for Sly and the Family Stone.

I was heavily influenced by my late grandfather, my grandmother, and of course my father. My grandmother pushed me to learn piano and it opened up a new world of expressing myself through music, and lyrircs. Sly Stone also serves as a mentor, and huge influece on my playing to this day. The first time he heard me play he said "your're pretty good young fella, maybe too good". This is a compliment that didn't go to my head, and I continually use it to motivate, and push myself further everyday.

Musically, I have been the musical director for 7 different successful bands of multiple genres in Wichita, KS, and served as musical director for my fathers band for three years in my late teens which got me out on the road and honed my skills. This eventually led to me deciding it was time to form my own bands, and put my own music in a position to be heard.

I have produced multiple albums for artists, and bands, in Wichita, KS, and the region, including working with Lil Naughty who has produced tracks for Lauryn Hill, and the Wu-Tang Clan. I also have experience playing the keys on multiple albums in the Wichita area, as a session player. I am currently working on my own music, and hope to debut my first full lenght album this year.

Performance wise I have opened for the Ying Yang Twins, Keith Sweat, Omarion, Chamillionaire, Ester Dean, Jaico, and Fishobone. I also had the opportunity to perfom my own set at a private party in Hawaii thrown by Mick Fleetwood. I would estimate I have performed well over 1000, if not 1000's of gigs in the midwest, whether it be solo, duo, trio, or in a whole band scenario.
