The soul-pop genre is so over-abundant now, that describing your music as such can almost act as a deterrent. As someone who listens to submissions on the daily, when I see a new artist’s sound described as soulful pop, I almost feel frustrated because I see that so often. Like damn, where’s that jazz/death metal/hip-hop fusion hiding? But then you listen to something as impressive as Rumours’ new single “I Do It All” and it reminds of two very important things: why that genre is so popular and how moving it can be when it’s truly done right.

The group is made up of Marion, Fede, and Mark, hailing from Norway and Italy (respectfully). Fede and Mark were childhood friends who began making music together until in 2013 they merged with vocalist Marion to create Rumours. Together, the trio is making a sound that weaves together touches of electronic beats, ambient piano riffs, and melodic vocals. Rumours is the UK trio behind dark, moody, and beautifully executed music. They skillfully blend opposing elements to create thoughtful and catchy soul-infused pop music.

They balance highs and lows, organic and electronic, simple and saturated. This interplay between opposites is especially appropriate given the theme of the song as well. In it's most distilled form, "So Bad" is about relationships.

Electronic trio Rumours, with members from the UK, Norway and Italy, bring a type of electronic pop that transcends geographical boundary and could, in fact, have come from any one of those countries. On "So Bad", the first track from their debut EP Shapes, Marion, Fede and Mark craft light pop melodies by way of Marion and Mark's dueling vocals with deep electro grooves for a track that works just as well in tinny ear buds as it does blaring out of a high end speaker system. When pressed on the meaning behind "So Bad", the band explained that it's "fairly simple: it's about the relationship between two people."
