Bio

Rupert Blackman is a singer and songwriter, currently living in Utrecht. Originally from London, Rupert moved to Holland in early 2008. Since arriving, his music has been featured on national radio, he has supported Dutch singer Sabrina Starke and the Dutch band Valerius. He has also won a handful of national songwriting contests, been the featured artist on Ongekendtalent.nl as well as being a weekly guest on the Rob Stenders show on 3fm.
Rupert was a solo artist for many years, however in late 2008, he realized he was enjoying living in Holland, so felt the time was right to build a fixed band around him and his music. Jan Schröder (guitar) was the first to show interest in the project. Kees Dijkstra (bass) and Simon Böing-Messing (drums) soon followed. They now join him on record and, for the most part, also live. Their addition brings further energy and colour to the songs as well as their own personal musical influences. The first record Rupert released with the band was the 2009 EP “If You Only Knew”. A blend of singer-songwriter style and soft acoustic pop, it served as a good starting point and led to many live performances (including a 23 show tour of Germany in summer 2010), national and local radio play, several “record deals” from indie labels, in The Netherlands, Germany, UK and US (none signed) and over 3,000 copies sold (mostly at live shows).
Most who have seen Rupert perform live over the years have been captivated by his sound. Including the Dutch singer Anouk, who, after seeing Rupert perform, invited him to support her for all 8 shows of her 2010 theatre tour (later postponed). Rupert has performed hundreds of shows over the last few years, from some of the largest concert venues in the country to some of the smallest brown cafes in the world! As long as Rupert is performing, and there are people to hear him, he is at his most content.
Rupert has independently released two EPs, but has yet to release a full album. This means he also currently lacks a lot of press reviews. However, one only needs to keep an eye on the comments on his website, or indeed his Facebook, to get an indication of the publics enthusiasm toward his music and the buzz it is generating.
As for the elusive album, Rupert has been waiting for all the pieces to be in the right place before recording it. This means, having the right songs, the right producer and the right team behind him before stepping into the studio. To get there it has taken almost a year of writing, rehearsing and promoting but as of February 2011, the puzzle is almost complete. Rupert and the band stepped into the studio, where they recorded their debut 'The Lights of Home' With Martijn Groeneveld. As a prologue for the album, Rupert and PIAS will release the Night and Day EP september 2012.
The album itself will be released by PIAS in january of 2013.
