Biography

'Remember the days when Joni, Jackson, James and Neil lived in the canyon? That's exactly what you get with Rupert Wates. Long may he run' (Tom Semioli, 'Minor 7th Online')
"Imagine the Moody Blues unplugged. That's Wates" (T Mannis, Rogers Park Bench BlogSpot)
Born in London, I've made music the centre of my life ever since I left college. During the 'nineties I wrote songs for myself and for other artists and played the live circuit in Britain and elsewhere in Europe. My debut CD, "Sweet Or Bitter Wine," was released in 2005 on the Mainstem label. Since fall 2006 I've been BASED IN THE USA. Either people have been nice to me or I've been lucky, and in 2007 alone I was nominated for TEN SONGWRITING AWARDS. Six of these were won by my song "After The Rains" (details on the AWARDS page of my website www.rupertwates.com). Other awards have included SECOND PRIZE in the North Carolina Songwriting Contest in October, and GOLD PRIZE n the FOLK/ACOUSTIC category and SECOND PRIZE overall in the Midatlantic Song Contest held in Virginia in December. In May 2008 I was one of TEN FINALISTS in the Wildflower Song Contest in Richardson, Texas, and one of 20 Top Finalists in the Great Lakes Song Contest in Michigan. My second solo album, "Coast To Coast", was recorded in spring 2007 in Tacoma, Washington with master engineer Evan Brubaker (Holly O Reilly, Patty Griffin) and was voted 'Album Of The Month' for October and one of the TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2007 by independent radio programme Britsound Radio, just behind albums by Radiohead and the Arctic Monkeys. In a review of the album, Rob Quicke of Britsound called it 'a delight to listen to' and went on: 'These are songs crafted with care and imbued with sincerity and conviction'. Writing in the Wisconsin journal 'The Badger Herald', critic Michale Merline praised the album's 'complex storytelling' and 'classy melodic sensibility', while in 'The Pacifican' Marty Bormolini wrote: 'Rupert Wates has a great, distinctive voice and shows great control in his ability to project the feeling of traveling across America'. As of February 2008 the album was on LIGHT TO MEDIUM ROTATION on well over 250 COLLEGE RADIO STATIONS all over the USA (see list below under RADIO PLAY). In November and December 2007 I gave two live interviews and performances on WPSC Radio at 88.7FM in New Jersey, which were broadcast to stations in the USA and the UK.
As for other gigs, every year I clock up many thousands of miles on the road. Alone or backed by my quartet, I play shows in every state in America and some in Canada. While on the west coast in 2008 I recorded a third solo album, 'Dear Life', again with Evan Brubaker and featuring internationally reputed bassist Michael Manring. Based on the east coast since fall 2008, I have live gigs booked up to six months ahead. Wherever I play, onstage or in the studio, the sound will be warm, clean, and clear, and the brand of material will be the same: acoustic instruments, lyrics that make you think, tunes that draw you in and stay in your head, keeping alive the flame of outstanding songwriting. This is why the Scottish Herald has called me "a singer who sings like he means it".

After The Rains

Written By: Rupert Wates

After The Rains

The eagle shakes his feathers dry
After the rains are gone
And makes his home the wide blue sky
After the rains are gone

And colours waiting to amaze
Are open to the gentle rays
Of the day to come
After the rains are gone

And we will walk in clearer light
After the rains are gone
And we will see with clearer sight
After the rains are gone

And when the rain dries on our cheeks
To leave us on our mountain peak
Then we will hear our vision speak

After the rains are gone
Far from the thunder's reach
We'll hear a different song
Love calling each to each

And through the mist of joy and pain
The morning bird will sing again
Though the night was long

And if no trace of us remains
To say we walked in love's domain
His will be our song
After the rains are gone

The eagle shakes his feathers dry
After the rains are gone
And makes his home the wide blue sky
After the rains are gone
After the rains are gone

On The Road To Santa Fe

Written By: Rupert Wates

On the road to Santa Fe
Rock and roll plays in my head
And my lover calls me still
Like a river in the hills of burning red
I was dreaming of her eyes
And I woke so far away
But I'll cheat the desert sky
And I'll meet her on the road to Santa Fe

I have been travelling from the coast
Looking for memories laying ghosts
I rented a car in downtown LA
Out on the wild and open plain
Crossing the tracks of cargo trains
Dreaming of Easy Rider
Thinking of Oppenheimer
Watching the eagles gliding away

On the road to Santa Fe (etc)

I met a full blood Navaho
On his way up from Mexico
Heading for Vegas tables to play
Others would come to mining towns
Hunting their treasure underground
Maybe the desert checked them
Maybe the desert kept them
Maybe the desert swept them away

On the road to Santa Fe (etc)

Prisoner Of The Open Road

Written By: Rupert Wates

Prisoner Of The Open Road

We have touched the misty mountains
Whiter than the halo of a winter moon
We have heard the desert wanderers
Calling to their caravans from dune to dune
We have seen the eagles gliding
Learned the secrets hiding in the sand and snow
And you know the path I'm riding
I was born to be a prisoner of the open road

We have slept beneath the starlight
While the restless ocean whispered broken lullabies
I have woken to your heartbeat and a love as warm as morning glowing in your eyes
We have watched an empire tumble
Climbed the walls that crumble
Where the kings once strode
And you held me when I stumbled
Blinded by the winding of the open road

We have tasted milk and honey
Drunk the juice of bitter berries from a secret vine
We have put on veils of mourning
And walked barefoot on the marble of forgotten shrines
And I will long to feel you with me
Think of how you kissed me when the wild wind blows
And I pray that you'll forgive me
But I'm born to be a prisoner of the open road

I will dream that you're beside me
Waiting there to guide me where the fire still glows
But I'm bound to keep on riding
I was born to be a prisoner of the open road
And you know the path I'm riding
You and I are prisoners of the open road

I'm The Guy

Written By: Rupert Wates

I'm The Guy

You may think you've seen it all well here's the big surprise
You ain't seen nothing babe like me just look into my eyes
The other guys were yesterday today belongs to me
You better learn to like it or you'll be history

'Cos I own the military the CIA and the FBI
And I ain't just anybody baby I'm the guy

You don't know me but I know all about you I can wiretap your phone
Check numbers in your bank account put surveillance on your home
My private dicks and dirty tricksters have got you on their files
You take me on I say bring it on you'll only make me smile

I will ram my secret weapon good and hard between your thighs
If you want some shock and awe babe try me out for size

'Cos I'm the guy who'll raise your taxes so you work until you drop
I'm the guy who gives your money to my buddies at the top
I'm the guy who stole the nation and sold it for a lie
My my baby who am I
Baby I'm the guy

Now all the TV networks they're just puppets on my string
I pick and choose the breaking news the stories that they spin
No matter what your crime these days there ain't no wrong or right
And the truth is just what plays the best that's how you fix the fight

So I keep my balls well covered as I watch the missilies fly
And when the war is over
If it's ever over
I'll still be the guy

I'm the guy in the jumpsuit with a bullhorn at my lips
I'm the guy who plays the hero and shoots straight from the hip
I'm the guy who sends your sons and your daughters off to die
Bye bye baby ooh bye bye
Baby I'm the guy

Cry cry baby you know why
Cos baby baby I'm the guy

Goodbye To The Old School

Written By: Rupert Wates

Goodbye To The Old School

Say goodbye to the old school
And all the people we knew
We can never get back there you know the change is in me and you

As you walk inside
Through the old familiar door the polished floor still smells the same
And in the case of glass
The revolutionary soldier still mounts guard
Oh remember the day
The boy from second grade first held your hand in history class
Oh remember the night
When you played the lead in Annie Get Your Gun and After The Fall
In the memorial hall

Say goodbye to the old school
And all the pictures we drew
Let go of the dreams that never came true
Say goodbye to the old rules
And all the records we played
And the nights we were lonely
While our friends were out getting laid

And back in '99
Another small town high school day had just got under way
When the morning broke
To the sound of gunfire answered by a scream
Oh lord
Bullet holes are scored along the walls of our minds
Oh my lord
The candles have burned down around the names on the shrine
They're yours and they're mine

Say goodbye to the old school
As they lower the flag
No reciting the pledge now our voices will snag
Say goodbye to the old school
And all the trophies we won
The long summer is over and a whole new world has begun

Say goodbye to the old school
And the lessons we learned
They've broken the mould now the books are all burned
Say goodbye to the old rules
And all we wanted to be
We can never get back there you know the change is in you and me

We can never get back there the change is in you and me

And The Wave Will Sing

Written By: Rupert Wates

And The Wave Will Sing

Travelling on an open highway watching the world flashing by
From the cradle to the tombstone in the blink of an eye
And the road leads forever
To the wide and empty sky

Over highlands to the lowlands and through joy and misery
We are following the river that returns to the sea
Of all we remember
And all that is to be

And the wave will sing
And the wind will call
And the weight will fall from our hands
Lighter than shadows on a sunny wall

We have prayed to the idols in the west and the east
We have traded our ambitions for a measure of peace
And the day is always coming
When we will be released

And the wave will sing (etc)

Oh over the hill the morning is breaking
And down in the dust the shadows are waking
Oh no matter where your spirit flies
Love is burning in your eyes
And I believe it never will die

Travelling on an open highway watching the world flashing by
From the cradle to the tombstone in the blink of an eye
And the road leads forever
To the wide and empty sky

And the wave will sing
And the wind will call
And the weight will fall from our hands
Lighter than shadows on a sunny wall
And the bough will break
The eagle will soar
And the road will carry us on
Light will be shining through the open door
And the road will carry us on
The ship will set sail for some other shore

Over and over
Over and over again

(When I Get Over To) California

Written By: Rupert Wates/Matt Wates

When I get over to California
I'm gonna head for the golden beach
Taking the time for all the things I ever wanted
Beautiful dreams always out of reach

I'm gonna leave for the rolling vineyards
Drowning in sweet California wine
Riding my board down where the waves unfurl forever
I'm going to find me some peace of mind

I'd fly to the moon
If they would only loan me a spacecraft
I'd sail to the pole
If I was sure of finding the sun
I'd go anywhere
If I could leave my memories behind me
And the wrongs that I've done

Some day I'll make it to California
I'm gonna walk through that open door
Maybe I'll find it isn't half the things they promised
Maybe I'll find it's all that and more

Maybe I'll find what I'm living for

Endless Revolution

Written By: Rupert Wates

Everybody wants to find their place
Everybody wants to force the pace
In endless revolution we all come and go
Some of us are busy agitating
Some of us are busy celebrating
Endless revolution while the river flows

And I believe in the light
I believe in the world to come
I won't grieve for my rights
I won't bleed for the wrong you've done

I know that the day is gonna come the sun will rise again
Because the endless revolution has begun
The day when I am yours and you are mine again
In the endless revolution we are one
We are one

Everybody's dream is made to last
Everybody's dream is fading fast
In endless revolution numbers one to ten
Some of us are given airs and graces
Everybody's busy changing places
Endless revolution makes us one again

And I believe in the light (etc)

I know that the day is gonna come the sun will rise again (etc)

(Instrumental)

The day is gonna come the sun will rise again
Because the endless revolution has begun
The day when I am yours and you are mine again
In the endless revolution we are one

We are one

Genevieve

Written By: Rupert Wates

Genevieve
The early morning sun is shining through the trees
The frosty air makes silver plumes each time you breathe
So close to me
Genevieve
A winter wind is shaking the autumn leaves
This world is harder than you ever could believe
Genevieve

Genevieve
Remember how the river sang its song to me
The rock of ages never felt so strong to me
How can I lose what never did belong to me
Genevieve
So many times I've wished that I could change the way
I run away from those who try to make me stay
It's hard to leave
Genevieve

In your eyes
I see ancient cobbled streets I recognize
Where to the music of the rain we'd harmonize
Side by side
All around
I hear the earth breaking with a gentle sound
And in the ocean filling up your eyes of brown
Let me drown

Genevieve (etc)

Genevieve
When the edges have begun to fray upon my sleeve
I'll draw the warmth around me that you weave
So don't you grieve
But Genevieve
The bell has rung the time has come for me to leave
And follow where the new horizon beckons me
Genevieve

Genevieve
Remember how the river sang its song to us
The rock of ages never seemed so strong to us
How can we lose what never did belong to us
Genevieve
The winter wind is blowing through the autumn leaves
This world is lovelier than you can conceive
It's hard to leave
Genevieve

How hard it is
How very hard to leave
Genevieve

Time

Written By: Rupert Wates

Time
Give me back what you owe to me
What you stole from me
Time
You attack all I hold most dear
You alone I fear

Once we were young
And the world that we saw would shine
But you, you took the sun
Leaving only the passing bell to chime

Time cruel time
Tell me you were kidding
Show me where you’ve hidden what was ours
Blind fool time
For every joy you steal
And every wound you deal
You heal the scars

Then kind cruel time
Give me grace to forgive your crime
As others have forgiven me mine
And all things are forgotten in time
