Russell Sawler

Russell Sawler

BandFolkSinger/Songwriter

A true entertainer, with a stage presence that oozes charisma and personality, Sawler draws his audience into his world with his truly unique and colorful lyrical prowess.

Biography

You can't fight genetics. Sawler, son of highly respected East coast based banjo player/songwriter Russell Sawler Sr, never took to music until relatively late in life. But, at the age of 23, he picked up his first guitar and found it difficult to put it down. Thus unleashed the floodgates of two decades plus worth of pent up creativity, and the songs simply flowed out.

A natural extrovert and all round fun loving guy, southern New Brunswick based Sawler immediately felt at home performing live. He establishes an instant rapport with his audience, with his colorful personality and sense of humor nicely complimenting his distinct and innovative songs by liberally dispersing amusing anecdotes and stories. After seeing a Russell Sawler show, one leaves not only thoroughly entertained, but feeling as if they have come to know him.

Sawler quite obviously takes great pains to be a true original. You'll find no cliche writing in his lyrics. Quite often light hearted, his songs are clever, witty, occasionally outrageous, and certainly full of surprises. Just when you think you have him figured out he somehow manages to pull the rug out from under you. Top it all off with Sawler's very tasty fingerstyle playing and you have a combination that's very pleasing to the ears.

2010 Highlight performances;
Kempt Shore Acoustic Festival
AmpFest

With a new album due out next year, Sawler will be out and about with a vengeance in 2011. Look for Sawler at festivals around the Maritimes, songwriter's venues and of course the ECMAs. For booking information phone Russell Sawler at (506)-456-3226, or email at rsawler@nbnet.nb.ca

Lyrics

Cheesecake

Written By: Russell Sawler

I rarely send my girl roses
Or write her poetry and love letters
But hey man you know I'm takin' care of mine
I buy my girlfriend cheesecake all the time

My bud says his gal's losing weight
He can't remember when she looked so great
I'm sorry but I don't share your excitement my friend
Losing weight is hard to do
You think she's really doing that for you?
I think things might be coming to an end
If she's shopping for a smaller dress size
She might also be shopping for a new guy
It's not all that very hard to see
While she's getting intimate with a new man
You'll be stuck with only your hand
So friend you could take a lesson off of me

CHORUS

If she starts dropping off the pounds
You might not have long to be around
It's likely much too late to change your ways
Yeah if her ass is getting smaller
You might want to start saving a couple of dollars
Cause you could soon be looking for a place to stay

CHORUS

If you think you need her
Man, take the time to feed her
And if you really love her
Make sure she's got a little blubber

CHORUS

Horse No Man Could Tame

Written By: Russell Sawler

My old mare had her new colt, died that very night
Can't say that I blame her, she must've known what he'd be like
And as he grew up, he grew all the harder to handle
He wouldn't take the yoke, and he wouldn't wear a saddle
Tried the hard hand and the gentle but we couldn't make him change
You know I ain't got much use for that horse no man could tame

Don't waste your time on that one boy
We gave up on him years ago
He's as wild as the pouring rain
He's just another horse no man could tame
He's just another horse no man could tame

The glue works up in Brampton offered twenty cents on the pound
But it'd cost more than that just to bring him into town
So I guess he ain't worth killing, and he ain't worth keeping alive
So I let him wander my back fields, I allow him to survive
He's always busting my fences and eating the other horses grain
You know I ain't got much use for that horse no man could tame

Don't waste your time on that one boy
We gave up on him years ago
He's as wild as the pouring rain
He's just another horse no man could tame
He's just another horse no man could tame
Yeah that one ain't no good for nothing now boy
Gave up on him so long ago
He's as wild as the pouring rain
He's just another horse no man could tame
He's just another horse no man could tame

I Once Was a Mountain

Written By: Russell Sawler

I once was a mountain
But now I'm a stone
The clouds and the eagles
Once sat on my throne
All down through the ages
Determined to stay
But the winds and the waters
They wore me away

A long time ago when my form was complete
The trees in the valleys, they sat at my feet
My shadows would cast for a mile down below
And wrapped round my shoulders, a blanket of snow

CHORUS

Down here on the ground, looking up at the sky
Where once I did stand so proud and so high
Where once I could see near and far 'cross the land
But now I am destined to turn into sand

CHORUS

Great Antitheses

Written By: Russell Sawler

Young and old
Hot and cold
Lower and higher
Sun and rain
Pleasure and pain
Common sense and desire

Wet and dry
Dead and alive
Truth teller and a liar
Dark and light
Wrong and right
Common sense and desire

Go and stop
Bottom and top
Seller and buyer
Wild and tame
Pride and shame
Common sense and desire

Peace and war
Less and more
Water and fire
Sorrow and joy
A girl and a boy
Common sense and desire
Common sense...

Tell Me What I Want

Written By: Russell Sawler

That's the tenth time today I've heard that song on the radio
It doesn't sound all that great to me, but what do I know?
There must be millions out there who think that it's a hit
Otherwise why would I have to constantly listen to it?

Paid $180 bucks for my new pair of jeans
But they're the coolest you can get from what I've seen
Hey if you wanna stay in style you gotta pay for the best
Even if it means you have to pay more to get less

Tell me what to wear, tell me what to watch
Tell me what to eat, tell me where I should go
Tell me what to think, tell me what to dream
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know

They're fighting a war in some country
And people's starving in a different one
There's people crying, and people dying
Every time you turn the news on
Bout you know all that stuff don't mean that much to me
It's just wasting time I could be watching reality tv

Tell me what to wear, tell me what to watch
Tell me what to eat, tell me where I should go
Tell me what to think, tell me what to dream
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know

The line starts over there for jumping off the bridge
Hey don't worry about nothing man,
Everybody's doing it

Tell me what to wear, tell me what to watch
Tell me what to eat, tell me where I should go
Tell me what to feel, tell me what I believe
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know
Tell me what I want, cause I don't know
