Sincerity in songwriting, easy-road-bound guitaring, and country-arranged simplicity seem to take over at any given moment.

Bible by the Bed

Written By: Russ Michaels

Bible by the Bed © November 2007 by Russ Michaels

i packed an old suitcase with a few mistakes
and i hit the road for a place i didn't know
i left my family safe behind me
but put my life of crime beside me so i'm not alone
in a stolen car where i sold my soul
the devil's got me runnin' empty on both
& this exit's motel bed will rest my head...
...cuz i gotta hard time tellin' what the fires of hell and heaven are lookin' for anymore.

But there's a bible by the bed... i don't think it's been open yet... and i've heard a preacher say: "if you read it once a day, you can find your way."

the mornin' whistle came from an old freight train
that's when i pulled a gun, now i'm on the run from that bank
i scored a couple thousand dollars
but i hear the law a hollarin' that "i'm out of luck"
& those handcuffs were all i had
when they slammed the gate and the officer said:
"son, you better straighten out your head... looks like...
...you've had hard time tellin' what the fires of hell and heaven are lookin' for anymore...

...so we put a bible by your bed, i don't think it's been open yet...& i heard a preacher say: 'if you read it once a day, you can find your way'..."

i had all the time to wait so i finally prayed
for all my highs and lows...and then i hit parole
and i was hopin' i'd be free then
but my fate's up to the warden... that's when he said:
"just give me one good reason and without a doubt i'll release ya, (your kids) could use a daddy back at home...(they) gotta hard time tellin' what the fires of hell and heaven are lookin' for anymore"...

i looked up and said: "sir my bible's by my bed... and i haven't closed it yet... ask Jesus, he would say: 'i've come a long way... since i left that day'..."

Pickin' Em Up

Written By: Russ Michaels

Pickin' Em Up © November 2007 by Russ Michaels

when she got married she thought she was feelin'
all the fairytales we all believe in
then he left her, and all their kids were screamin' & her heart broke into pieces
pickin' em up is the highlight of that day

now she's a single mom with kids and she keeps prayin'
the good lord grants her strength and all the patience
to teach her little ones even while they're playin' and all the toys are layin'... layin' around
that pickin' em up is the highlight of that day

she's wakin' em up and makin' em all eat breakfast
then they're off to school & she goes off to workin'
& when the day is done and her body's achin'... the smiles are right there waitin'
and pickin' em up is the highlight of that day

oh she always says she ain't got time for datin'
i just think she's afraid to make another mistake
but she's the sweetest thing and her kids are great so i picked 'em up at eight
and pickin' em up is the highlight of that day

when we got married she knew she was feelin'
all the fairytales she once believed in
she's got a lovin' man and a second chance & she picked up the final piece
the father they need

Ninety Miles Down

Written By: Russ Michaels

Ninety Miles Down ©2007 by Russ Michaels

I'm growin' older, a little bolder, but I'm losing ground
with a battered mind & two dark eyes, i'm gonna give up the crown & throw this towel
so i pack my bags but not too heavy
and wave a flag to new yok city

The wait is over, I throw it over my shoulder, then i'm sinkin' down
to the southern line, the bible-beltway rises to Georgia's 85, sweetly on my mind
to grab a beer with my old buddy
prayin' music lies below Montgomery

he's talkin' bout steering life
down a gulfcoast drive in the wheels of grace
on the heels of finding space

another 90 miles down
through the fields of the unincorporate towns
there's a "welcome" 'round but it don't make a sound
my best friend in town is the shadow on the ground
the moon shining down is the only light around
everything's become my home now...another 90 miles down

the Texas line, the Beaumont side, i read a sign
"don't mess with us", we're serious...you've got 12 hours to drive 'til you see the other side
i see it's 6 o'clock now in the mornin
as i hear an outlaw's music warnin'

he's talkin' bout steering life
down an Austin drive in the wheels of grace
on the heels of finding space

another 90 miles down
through the fields of the unincorporate towns
there's a "welcome" 'round but it don't make a sound
my best friend in town is the shadow on the ground
the moon shining down is the only light around
everything's become my home now...another 90 miles down

the rocky mountain deserts say that life moves better on the other side
so i rush to get her...blowin' towns for better weather
and it comes as no surprise...49er ways are nice
yep my western race to California's done
the goldest coin is their setting sun

talkin' bout steering life
down the ocean drives on the wheels of grace
in the golden state...finding space.

another 90 miles down
through the fields of the unincorporate towns
there's a "welcome" 'round but it don't make a sound
my best friend in town is the shadow on the ground
the moon shining down is the only light around
everything's become my home now...another 90 miles down
