The Walking Dead

Written By: Russ Shipton

THE WALKING DEAD (Words & Music by Russ Shipton)

Now who are these shadows that creep through this town
No chatter, no laughter, no usual human sound
Just an unearthly silence as they pass on by
Their will has been broken, you won’t catch their eye.

After eons of dreamtime with their own joys and fears
We brought them a nightmare for three hundred years
Oh this land may be hot, this land may be dry
But it’s their land and for their land, it’s no surprise they cry.

And they shuffle their feet, and they bow their heads
These strangers in their own land, the truth must be said
We’ve polluted their water, we’ve poisoned their bread
And we’ve crushed their souls, they’re the walking dead.

We sit in our palaces of gluttony and greed
Consuming so much more than we ever really need
Oh we come here to look, but most will never see
What’s under their noses, the pain and misery.

Uluru and King’s Canyon, we give money for the show
But our dollars won’t repay the kind of debt that we owe
We gather our images, then we’re quick to leave
For we have no interest in the reasons why they grieve.

Oh it’s easy to ignore all these shadows moving round
When just two days have passed in this tourist town
Oh we gaze at their art, we invade their holy sites
Our wealth and collusion have given us the right.

Alice has no use for these sad, soulless poor
But Katherine with the elders, they try to find a cure
Oh there’s hope for the future, for the road we all tread
If we can restore the souls of the walking dead.

Silver Butterfly

SILVER BUTTERFLY (Words & Music by Russ Shipton)

Your name comes up so often in conversation
And in my mind each day is your sweet smile
At home or work or any situation
I hear your voice, in that soft Dakotan style.

It’s been five years since the day that you left us
And I’ve been trying to live the way you’d want me to
It’s hard to believe there’s a God with any mercy
‘Cause our lives are so much poorer without you.

And as I travel round this crazy world we live in
Those final words you said come back to me
You told me to be strong and not to give in
But you didn’t say how hard it was going to be.

I know you’d be embarrassed by these thoughts of mine
‘Cause you never brought attention to yourself
And never courted recognition for your good deeds
Always much too busy helping someone else.

And as I travel round this crazy world we live in
I wish that you could tell me what you think somehow
If there’s a God, well only he knows where we’re heading
But it’s hard to believe things are any better now.

Do you recall that silver butterfly I bought you
‘Cause like a butterfly you’d rush from place to place
And you’d always have a constant stream of good ideas
That you gave away with a smile upon your face.

And as I travel round this crazy world we live in
I see your guiding light shine on the road ahead
I’m trying to be strong and not to give in
But to be like you, and give something back instead.

Now this is just a simple, little love song
But my carefully chosen words should ring true
‘Cause I wrote it for a very special person
To say sweet Therese, I still remember you.

That Somethin' Else

Written By: Russ Shipton

THAT SOMETHIN’ ELSE (Words & Music by Russ Shipton)

I’ve known some girls, yeah one or two
Come to think about it, I’ve enjoyed the company of more than a few
And they’ve been sweet, really nice
The kind any warm-blooded man would look over at least once or twice.

But I stayed single, no one could light that spark
To make togetherness more than just a frolic in the dark
No magic ingredient to make my heart melt
No special someone, no girl with that somethin’ else.

When would I ever find a lady who could make my head spin
And at the same time keep my rovin’ eyes from their usual wanderin’
Someone who could breach my defences, then make me walk tall?
Yeah I guess I was waitin’ for the girl who’s got it all.

Then along came this dream, no, not just another girl
‘Cause I knew right from the start, she would change my view of the world
She’s got that magic, the key to my heart
We’re almost strangers, but already I know we’ll never part.

She smiles at me, and my cold heart melts
Yes, she’s the girl, I’ve found the girl, she’s got it all
She’s the one with that somethin’ else.

What Are We Going to Tell the Children

Written By: Russ Shipton

WHAT ARE WE GOING TELL THE CHILDREN? (Words & Music by Russ Shipton)

Our eyes can see but we act like we’re blind
We hear the truth but we close our minds
We ignore those doom-mongers, and all they have to say
‘Cause we wanna go on and on in our own sweet way.

The ice caps are melting, they say the sea will rise
But it may never happen, and the numbers could be lies
No it’s not urgent, we should wait and see
And it’s all happened before, you’ve just gotta look back in history.

But what are we going tell the children
When they ask us why, why we did nothing
Why we didn’t even try
What are we going to tell the children
In their schoolbooks they’ll want to learn/They have the right to know
All the reasons we let it happen
Why we went beyond the point of no return/Why we had the chance and let it go.

We plunder the earth, we take much more than we need
We poison the atmosphere to satisfy our greed
We kill off species, we destroy the land
Will the future generations forgive us, I wonder, will they understand?

Our heads are buried in the sand, but the sands of time
Will reveal big problems and the fault will be yours and mine
If we don’t do something, then something’s sure to give
The world may go on turning, but what kind of place will it be to live?
