Biography

Quit Wasting Tape, the debut album from Rutherford Rock Project (RRP), is an eclectic blend of intelligent lyrics articulated through smooth, emotional vocals, complemented by catchy guitar riffs, soothing bass melodies, and inventive percussions. The album was written, recorded, and produced by RRP, a four-piece acoustic rock ensemble from St. Louis, Missouri. Originally formed as a husband-and-wife acoustic rock project by guitarist Jason Rutherford and vocalist/guitarist Rebecca Rutherford in 2006, RRP recently evolved to include Jerry Haines on bass and Kevin Dager on drums.

At first listen, RRP offers a throw-back folk sound, evident in songs like “The Limit,” “The Other Half,” and “For Awhile.” While these songs provide the ethereal anchor for Quit Wasting Tape, RRP dusted off the amp, plugged in the Les Paul and created “Circumstance,” “Apathy & Envy,” and “Fast Track.”

A natural writer, Rebecca designed many song lyrics around poems she crafted over the years. Quit Wasting Tape captures her simple yet intricate guitar styling, reflecting her admiration for artists like Ray LaMontagne, Jack Johnson, and Mason Jennings.

After playing in and out of bands for nine years, Jason turned to Rebecca’s soulful sound to front a new endeavor. Jason draws ideas from creatively diverse artists, including Death Cab for Cutie, Weezer, and Roger Clyne.

Kevin has been playing drums for over 25 years in various genres from rock to jam to jazz. Several influences have shaped Kevin's performance, from individuals like Vinnie Colaiuta, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Gadd, and Dave Weckl, to groups like Primus, The Police and Steely Dan.

A seasoned veteran with 27 years on bass, Jerry draws his inspiration from bassist Paul McCartney, James Jamerson, and Larry Graham. Jerry’s inclination toward comforting bass tones sets Quit Wasting Tape on solid ground.

Lyrics

The Limit

Written By: Rebecca Rutherford

Touch and sight aren’t what they seem
We all dream of better things
Live excessive with the best of
Almost everything
We are better off unseen

The limit’s not the sky
Shut as you might this idea
From your simple eyes
Infinite reasons to be
Deemed unsatisfied
But in later places
Faces were just outside

We’re afraid to be ourselves
Living like there’s no one else
We’re so hurried and so worried
To get through it all
Can’t remember how it felt

The limit’s not the sky
Shut as you might this idea
From your simple eyes
Infinite reasons to be
Deemed unsatisfied
But in later places
Faces were just outside

Apathy & Envy

Written By: Rebecca Rutherford

So there I was with regular anchors
Walking the world with significant strangers
Minds on a goal few ever achieve, and
Faith in a soul I could never believe in

Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that now
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that now
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that

Stop your veins until they are frozen
Find out what remains at the bottom
Run this drill until it is broken
I would help but it’s not my problem

Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that now
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that now
Someone should do somethin’ ‘bout that

There’s something new that shines in your eye now
A message you’ve left that I cannot reply to
And I see faces that feel just like I do
Maybe it’s not just our friends that we lie to
You can’t write by yourself the song
And the words won’t make sense but you’ll sing along
I care a lot more than I try to
Maybe it’s not just our friends that we lie to

And I’ll make mistakes twice
And be everything but nice
Your friends are more like fiction
You may be your own addiction

Nothing’s been safe since envy turned pink
And I feel the same way that I know you must think
You can’t be held hostage by choices you make
I don’t know how much more pink I can take
And nothing’s been fine since your mind fell away
To the clone that’s combined with the phrases they say
And your nonchalant ways that are more than opaque
I don’t know how much more pink I can take

There’s something old that tries to resurface
A feeling that maybe you’ve done this on purpose
It makes me sick to think this is what I do
Maybe it’s not just myself that I lie to
I’m not saying I’m in the clear
I’ll come clean and I’ll disappear
I care a lot more than I try to
Maybe it’s not just myself that I lie to

And I’ll make mistakes twice
And be everything but nice
My friends are more like fiction
I may be my own addiction

Nothing’s been safe since envy turned pink
And I feel the same way that I know you must think
You can’t be held hostage by choices you make
I don’t know how much more pink I can take
And nothing’s been fine since your mind fell away
To the clone that’s combined with the phrases they say
And your nonchalant ways that are more than opaque
I don’t know how much more pink I can take

God of Nothing

Written By: Rebecca Rutherford

On the sidewalk
Under stairs, in a
Canopy of trees
I’ll do as I please
In a prison
Walls of bed sheets
Paper friends I made
I am not afraid

Ooh, I am the god of nothing
But heaven’s in my hands

Endless secrets
When the heat went from
Infiniti to cool
Oceans in the pool
In a circus
Thrown on purpose at the
Cars that cross the street
I will fall asleep

Ooh, I am the god of nothing
But heaven’s in my hands

There’s something in my mind
That stays fixed upon that time
Where fate exists unrefined
And I am alive
There’s nowhere I would go
To take away all I know
To feel myself fading slow
And I am alive

Ooh, I am the god
Ooh, I am the god
Ooh, I am the god of nothing
But heaven’s in my hands

Anyway

Written By: Rebecca Rutherford

It’s a week away from autumn
I’m floating to the bottom
And falling through a fate I can’t control
It feels I’m contemplating
Or somehow slowly waiting
For sensations to reside inside my soul
I’m alive but I’m not breathing
I look up as you are leaving
All I’m seeing are desires in a daze
I will gaze with wishful eyes
Only then I realize
What I wanted was never there anyway

Well I’d like to say I’m lucky, man
But I just don’t think you understand
It takes more time to contemplate
But some things just don’t want to wait

It’s funny but I’m feeling
You don’t like the hand I’m dealing
‘Cause you’re looking at me like I have no head
I’ve thought about denying
Everything but I’d be lying
And I think that I’ll just suck it up instead
Well I’m faithful but I’m crazy
I’ll stay around but maybe
I will hit the road after a couple days
You’ve been boring me for minutes
And I just don’t think you’re with it
I guess I never was right for you anyway

Well I’d like to say I’m lucky, man
But I just don’t think you understand
It takes more time to contemplate
But some things just don’t want to wait

It’s a week away from autumn
I’m floating to the bottom
And falling through a fate I can’t control
It feels I’m contemplating
Or somehow slowly waiting
For sensations to reside inside my soul

For Awhile

Written By: Rebecca Rutherford

I wish that I could captivate
Your eyes for awhile
I want to know the secrets
Hiding quiet behind your smile
Life has had its seasons
These people have changed
I want to be the reason
Your life’s rearranged

And I will tremble
At your touch
And say the things that
Mean so much
I will master
Any trial
Just for the chance to be yours
For awhile

I wish that I could memorize
Your mind for a minute
I want to be surprised and mesmerized
By what’s within it
Time is just a measure
Of what I have to give
I want to be your rhyme and
Your reason to live

And I will tremble
At your touch
And say the things that
Mean so much
I will master
Any trial
Just for the chance to be yours
For awhile
