Apparently Ruuti means gunpowder in Finnish which seems entirely appropriate given the, ahem, explosive nature of the playing on this their debut disc.
Ruuti’s top flight playing ensures the quality throughout is impeccable but the success also springs from the choice of music and its presentation. Given that Kukka Lehto’s spellbinding violin carries the majority of the tunes, it would have been all to easy and entirely understandable to focus all the attention upon her work.
Yet there’s an equitable division of heavy lifting when it comes to music’s construction. Though Lehto dazzles with her effortless, agile playing, in addition to providing acoustic bass, Ilkka Heinonen composed the majority of the music on the album.
He propels and supports with both a nimble certainty and lyrical sensibility across the record but especially on the beautifully ruminative Routajärvi. At a little over eight minutes, this is the longest track on the album and moves at a significantly slower pace than nearly everything else but it radiates an intense and unforgettable warmth.

Topi Korhonen’s guitar is capable of driven, rippling chord-work, constantly stoking the group’s engines whilst always maintain a tight control in his use of dynamics. His jittery, skittish guitar slides on Marsukka work into brittle but furious jazzy outbursts whilst on Puro his spidery melodies delicately lace themselves between Heinonen’s lilting bass with the utmost precision.
Lehto handles the vocals, adding to the checklist of pluses which seem to grow with each and every play of the album.
Ruuti’s music evokes images that combine both reflective bucolic idyls on the one hand and rousing gatherings on the other. The social, communal experience of exchanging ideas as well as smiles and admiration for each other’s work is beautifully expressed on almost every track of this joyous, uplifting record. - Sid Smith / Sid Smith’s Post Cards From The Yellow Room

The second album comes from a band called Ruuti. This trio exists out of a violinist, guitarist and bassist and they play new compositions in folk style. This is the groups debut album. The thirteen compositions are all very nice, uplifting and well played tunes. The band mixes influences from the Finnish folk with styles from other places of West and Northern Europe. Very nice is Vihtahousu with delicate guitar-play and a dancing violin. In Onneni tähdet violinist Kukka Lehto shows to be blessed with a nice voice. Her earthy way of singing suits this ballad very well. A nice album with friendly acoustic folk, very easy going and therefore suitable for a wide audience.

Das finnische Trio Ruuti war am 14.09.2009 in Frankfurt zu Gast und hat das Frankfurter Publikum gut unterhalten. Die drei Musiker Kukka Lehto, Topi Korhonen und Ilkka Heinonen, die seit 2005 im Folktrio zusammen spielen, präsentierten außergewöhnlich reizvolle Musik voller überraschender Momente. Die Zuhörerinnen und Zuhörer waren begeistert und spendeten reichlich Applaus.

Nach der Vorstellung traf man sich noch im Rotationscafé. Dort tat sich die Gruppe „RUUTI“ spontan mit einer anderen anwesenden Musikgruppe zusammen und boten den Gästen zur späten Stunde noch eine Sondervorstellung.

Was macht ein finnischer Musiker, wenn er in heimischen Wäldern radeln geht? Die meisten geniessen die Natur und erfreuen sich des Lebens. Nicht so Ilkka Heinonen- der begnadete Kontrabassist komponiert, während er in die Pedale tritt. Am Samstagabend trat im Rotationstheater das finnische Trio ‘Ruuti’ auf und bot ein fröhliches Konzert mit eigenen Kompositionen finnischer Folk-Musik. Begleitet von Sängerin Kukka Lehto (Geige) und Gitarrist Topi Korhonen entstand ein Hauch finnischer Heimatgefühle.
Ebenfalls aus der Feder von Ilkka Heinonen stammen die Stücke ‘Veteli’, ‘Puro’ und ‘Marsukka’ (Walzer). Da alle drei Künstler die deutsche Sprache nur gebrochen beherrschen, wurde oft finnisch oder englisch gesprochen. Besonders die Sängerin Kukka Lehto verstand es mit ihrer herzlichen Art, die Zuhörer zu gewinnen. Mit viel Gefühl und Tiefgang spielte sie ihre Geige mit völliger Hingabe. Jedes Musikstück hat eine eigene Geschichte wie z.B. das im Duett gesungene ‘Muuttoauto’, (Umzugswagen) oder ‘Routajärvi’ (Eisscholle) mit langen Solopassagen des Kontrabasses. Neben vielen temporeichen Polkas wurde auch das etwas ruhigere Menuett neu interpretiert. ‘Ruuti’ hat es geschafft, Einblicke in die traditionelle Musik Finnlands zu gewähren und trug damit gewiss zur Förderung der Beziehungen zwischen Finnen und Deutschen bei.

Ganz ohne Frage hatte Kukka Lehto die absolute Dominanz; dank ihrer mitreißenden und faszinierenden Geigenvirtuosität, verstand sie es souverän wohl durchdachte musikalische Akzente zu setzen. Sowohl in folkloristischer als auch in einer dem Swingstil entlehnten Manier, fand sie schwerelos Zugang. Ob in instrumentaler oder vocaler Version, war es ein unbestreitbares Vergnügen, ständige Inspiration konstatieren zu können. Dies gilt insbesonders Topi Korhonen mit seiner Gitarre, als auch Ilkka Heinonen am Kontrabass, die insgesamt kompositorische Arrangements zu setzen wussten.
Beginnend mit "Veteli", einem sehr lebendigen allegro con brio, über dem eher sanftmütigen "Bach" und den "Glücklichen Sternen", vernahm man eine ungezügelte, feurige "Mazurka", sowie einen äußerst beschwingten "Morgenwalzer" und einer gleichfalls dem Polnischen verwandte "Kristallpolska".
Final sei noch die zusätzliche Bemerkung (-oder auch Anregung ?!) gestattet, dass das Ruuti Trio mit Sicherheit auch ganz bravourösen Swing a la Toni Stricker, Svend Assmussen oder Helmut Zacharias zu verkörpern verstünde...

..The trio format is somewhat evocative of the Swedish group Väsen; that's not an easy comparison to live up to, but I wouldn't make it if I didn't feel Ruuti were worthy of it. Their sound is a bit jazzier and less muscular than Väsen's, but they boast a similar combination of fine melodies composed within the tradition and solid, energetic playing..
…Ruuti are a promising trio. Anybody looking for new tradition music from Scandinavia will find plenty to like on their CD.
