"Red Wire Black Wire - Locked Out"

We’ve had our eyes on these Wesleyan grads for a while but this time they bring us a poppier, hook-heavy track, "Locked Out." Who knew being getting fucked up and locked out of your casa could be so inspiring. But evidently it can be, with Red Wire Black Wire spit out cutting lyrics, heavy drums and breezy shoe-gaze guitar in the background. Meanwhile, we’ve had their decidedly darker "Compass" on repeat these days - it’s fuzzed-out bass and twirling synths draw us in while references to "kill the old and pervert the youth" ensures the band never needs to worry about being classified as young and cute.

PS: They are hosting an ‘erotic’ record release party this Thursday @ NY’s Lit Lounge, with bands Armchair and Deleted Scenes.

"A Different Class"

"RWBW are currently turning heads in Brooklyn with their icy Human League-meets-Ladytron electro pop." - NME

"Red Wire Black Wire Compass EP"

Ladies and gentlemen, we have elite in the house. No, not one of that “pseudo Pseudoe” or “wanna-be incognito but writing for fame” knick-knacks. These are elite as a matter of fact. Well, this should be mention and it does. But it shouldn’t be a criterion to get considered by us and it is none.

Instead of that, we still get softened by innovative music and congenial characters (even if we just communicate in bits and bytes with most of them). And that’s what comes by Red Wire Black Wire, an electro-pop band whose members recently graduated from extolled Wesleyan University and then high-tailed it for New York City.

I am really into the uncongested sound this quintet brings into being. The group distinguishes themselves with a penchant for melody and a flair for song craft. Lyrics that straddle the line between macabre humor and sinister love poem.

To cut a long story short, Red Wire Black Wire is a band that has taken everything cool about modern music and boiled it down to its pure pop essence. Their new EP comes out November 25, 2008 on Tough Customer Records. Tours, video, and total world domination to follow. Well then!

Bio

Red Wire Black Wire is a Brooklyn based 5-piece that creates music with the immediacy of a DJ and the subtlety of film score. Formed at Wesleyan University, their music combines dense but precise layers of synths, guitars, strings, and pounding drums. Eschewing irony, singer Doug Walters focuses on the melancholy; critics have compared him to Robert Smith and Frank Miller. Red Wire Black Wire effortlessly fuse electronic and organic counterpoint to create catchy, textured, and revealing compositions.

Armed with synths, drum machines, whiskey, and sleep deprivation, Doug Walters recorded 7 songs in his basement over 2 weeks while on spring break. He returned to school determined to win the school’s battle of the bands with a live version his laptop compositions. Filling the band with music students from Wesleyan, Walters led the band to victory at the battle and was thereby granted the opportunity to open for Andrew W. K. and Talib Kwali at the school’s spring festival. Red Wire Black Wire have since graduated and migrated to Brooklyn, NY where they continue to refine their shiny yet brooding sound.
