Biography

Ryan Andrews is a multi-talented instrumentalist, composer and arranger from Kalamazoo, MI. While finishing his degree in Jazz Studies at Western Michigan University, Ryan released his first collection of recorded compositions entitled 'Requiem'. To release the album, Ryan enlisted the talents of at select handful of highly talented musicians, each with their own extensive musical history and background.

John Knific is a prominent Cleveland-based jazz pianist who has been playing with Ryan in various projects since high school. Chris Beckstrom, also a long-time Ryan Andrews collaborator, is a highly accomplished composer and multi-instrumentalist whose resumé grows daily. Marc Plotkin and Ben Jacobs are founding members of the New York pop group Miles. Besides being incredible musicians they are both outstanding audio engineers as well. Taylor O'Donnell's voice has wooed audiences across the US in a wide variety of musical situations--from vocal jazz to opera to pop and rock music.

Ryan's music draws from an open mind towards all types of music and is especially hard to categorize. The album 'Requiem' takes the listener on a musical journey: beginning with the driving rhythms of "African 6/8" through the jazz-trio ballad "December", continuing to the soaring structure of "Requiem" to the string quartet arrangement in "Half Gone". An avant-garde contemporary jazz piece ("The Unknown") and an acoustic number ("Okay") round out the eclectic mix. However, no matter the genre, the music keeps an underlying unifying vibe--making this collection of diverse selections a singular musical entity.

Combine these compositions with the musical mastery and unique interpretation that each band member contributes, and the end result is downright spectacular. It's music that moves people--physically, emotionally, physiologically, ideologically…it's music for the mind and body. It's not just another "rock" group, not another "jazz" group, not another "world" or "fusion" group. It's music doing what music should do: move you.

Love Waits

Written By: Ryan Andrews

We were then, in a different place.
Why did I let you go?
I thought that it was the only way,
but now I just don't know.

You still come through to me,
through the evidence,
but we'll never see,
what it could be like.
What do I do to you?
Would I be surprised?
I'll never see...

But I, feel,
so alive,
and you, know,
what's kept me here.

We were such a beautiful thing,
not that we'd ever know.
Oh too shy, until it's too late,
and leaving room to grow.
You're coming down on me,
through the evidence,
but how could we see
what it could be like?
Can I get close to you?
The fear in your eyes,
we'll never see...

But I, feel,
so alive,
and you, know...

Love is waiting here for you,
and what we'll never know.
It hurts, it stings me seeing you.

Love is waiting here for you,
love we'll never see.
It's gone, we've missed the big chance.

You still come through to me.
You make a mess of me.
Can I still prove to you?
For you to see...

But I, feel,
so alive,
and you, know...

Love is waiting here for you,
and what we'll never know.
It hurts, it stings me watching you.

Love is waiting here for you,
love we'll never see.
It's gone, we've missed our big chance.

Love is waiting here for you,
and here inside is home.
For you, but you'll never come inside.

Some say that things are the way they are
cause you got away with murder.
It's no stretch of the memory,
to know the day, to know the hour.
Some say nothing is gonna change,
and I'll get away with murder.
But I say if we just look inside,
we can get away, we can get away.

A hundred times I can sing this song,
and you'll get away with murder.
A hundred times I'll still be wrong,
'til you pass away, you'll pass away.
Counting corners in a round,
it's how we get away with murder.
Keep them in the dark is all,
nothing more you need, no more you need.

Sometimes it's alright,
to walk away without
time ever drawing near.
Someday we'll look back,
on all we did and say,
how could we?

Standing hands in my pockets-full,
you'll get away with murder.
Listening, hearing not a sound,
we'll get away, we'll get away.
Some kind of benefit is coming 'round,
so I'll get away with murder.
Here I am sticking to my ground,
not this again, not this again.

Sometimes it's alright,
to walk away without
time ever drawing near.
Someday we'll look back,
on all we did and say,
how could we?

Okay

Written By: Ryan Andrews

I'm outside looking in
on this mess you're living in
and I want to be close to you
holding your hand

make you feel strong, strong enough to understand
the world can't touch you, you're beyond it all

we're looking at you
and can't help but fall

it's all okay,
it's all okay.

I'm listening to you now
hear the soft, silent sounds
but I don't want to speak to you
holding you close
let my actions tell you what
you should already know
you're beyond any words
I could say to you
just feel my heart beating
as I lay here with you

yeah, we'll be okay,
we'll be okay.

In Transition

Written By: Ryan Andrews

hey
don't get excited
you play it, I'll lay it down.
hey
i feel kinda slighted
no wonder i'm living downtown.

say
you look for answers
while steppin' on the wise man's toes.
no
you can't look farther
when your life goes so slow.

tumbling into this is yesterday.

i watched you go,
i needed to.
i saw the things you did
and then i walked away.

hey
you paint a picture
symmetric and lying down.
so
it's a f***ing picture
there's no life, no blood, no sound.

hey
i put upon it
a note telling you to wake yourself.
you
you threw up on it
no lessons learned that i could tell.

falling farther into yesteryear.

i watched you go,
i needed to.
i saw the things you did
and then i walked away.

hey
you need some answers
well come here and f***ing get em.
you
you squabble for them
like a chicken swimming in the sea.

what
you have some questions
and all i do is listen to you speak.
you
you have the morals
the abilities to find what you seek.

falling into another yesterday...

Requiem

Written By: Ryan Andrews

Fall down the well.
Falling down again...

Is it enough to know that I'll be there?
Sweating and tired and broken down.
Would you believe when I say I really care?
I'm not sure, I'm not sure, I'm too scared...

Looking back again onto lies,
They told us and they beat us until we couldn't see.
But there up ahead there's something bright,
let's hold on tight, keep holding on, through today...

Requiem aeternam
dona eis, Domine
et lux perpetua
luceat eis.

[Let eternal rest grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them]

It's too much to say that we are lost,
but losing more every day is what we are.
Turning 'round again to something real,
let's light our hope and let us go not silently...

Requiem aeternam
dona eis, Domine
et lux perpetua
luceat eis.

[Let eternal rest grant them, O Lord, and let perpetual light shine on them]

Kyrie eleison.
Christe eleison.
Kyrie
eleison...

{Lord, have mercy. Christ, have mercy. Lord, have mercy...]

Fall down the well...
Fall down again...

Pie Jesu Domine
dona eis requiem
requiem sempiternam

Kyrie eleison...

[Merciful Lord Jesus, grant them rest, rest everlasting. Lord, have mercy...]

Set List

A typical setlist varies depending on the venue, audience and musical situation. While mostly performing original songs, covers such as Radiohead's "Pyramid Song", Dave Matthews Band's "Granny", Zero 7's "Home" or Johnny Cash's "Ring of Fire" also sneak onto the band's setlists. Intimate acoustic sets are a common staple for when the situation allows.
