"Singer Songwriter: Ryan Gay"

Ryan Gay traces his inspiration back to the poets and folksingers who inspired Bob Dylan.

"Recently, folk has made a comeback, but when I started there wasn't a lot out there," he said. "I got interested when Dylan played here, and read that to write like Dylan, you don't listen to Dylan, you listen to what Dylan listened to."

That led Mr. Gay back to early folk, particularly Woody Guthrie, and writers from the Beat movement.
"I read a lot of poetry," he said. "Sonnets, Shakespeare and people like that. Also (Jack) Kerouac and (Allen) Ginsberg."

Mr. Gay said he sees parallels in Ginsberg's approach to poetry and his own approach to writing.

"I like songs where a very small part might make a lot of sense," he said. "Allen Ginsberg's poetry doesn't always tell a great story, but a couple of lines can mean a lot."
