"Performance Review from Executive Director, Northern Scene"

"I had high hopes for the new production of Tulugak – Inuit Raven Stories at Northern Scene - the actors and storytellers involved were world-class. But I was not prepared to be so completely won-over by the musicians of the project. Saali’s wonderfully haunting vocals moved me to tears – his music was story, setting, staging, lighting and magic all in one, delivered with such simple honesty and filled with meaning. Saali’s music is music from the heart – period."

"Music and fun galore at Iqaluit’s 2012 Alianait Arts Festival"

The action starts Friday night with a 7 p.m. ticketed opening concert in Nakasuk School that features Esther Powell and the Rough Cuts, a Rankin Inlet band in Iqaluit for the first time, that’s known for its mix of blues, Inuit rock and gospel.

Alianait’s opener also includes Ann Vriend, a singer and pianist from Edmonton, Nunavik singer-songwriter Saali (Charlie Keelan), and Iqaluit’s Jerry Cans, who play Inuktitut and English rock and say they’re “working hard to make sure awesome music by artists like Uvagut Band and Jimmy Ekho are embraced by the next generation of Nunavummiut.” - Nunatsiaq News

"This Is My Time (Everyday)"

Raven persuades a mad scientist to abandon time and leads him on an adventure through the cosmos, toward self-discovery.

Director’s statement

“When I first listened to Charles’ song, I was struck by the lyrics. I was interested in the idea of time, both as a single moment and as a force that cannot be halted. I like the concept that all humanity is beholden to time yet we all possess the free will to choose how we spend the time we have in our lives.

By embracing our inner child, we become more present and mindful within a moment. When we are present, there is only that single instant of awareness, a place where time ceases to exist, where we are asked to acknowledge our relationship to the larger universe.

Charles’ song seems to suggest that this state of being is something to be cherished and celebrated, and I wanted to explore cinematically what that would look like by creating a fantasy world to illustrate these ideas.”

Bio

Saali is a new Canadian-Indie band based out of Montreal, Quebec, led by Inuk singer/songwriter Charles Saali Keelan (AKA Chucky). The band performs all original music with lyrics in both Inuktitut and English languages. Their musical style is versatile and can be classified as Aboriginal, Alternative, Folk and World.

Saali was born on Baffin Island in Iqaluit, Nunavut and spent most of his childhood in Killinik and later Quaqtaq, Quebec, a small northern village of 350 people. He is a multi-instrumentalist who plays the guitar, keyboard, drums, harmonica and Jaw Harp. Saali began his musical career in the late 90s as a drummer for the Beatrice Deer Band. He wrote the music and co-wrote lyrics for both the debut album Just Bea (2005), won Best Inuit/Culture Album at the Canadian Aboriginal Music Awards, and Beatrice Deer (2010).

In 2006, he released his debut self-titled album Chucky, produced with a well-known northern metal band Angava. His second album titled Chucky? (2010) was produced with TJ Plenty of the Asexuals, and was nominated Best Rock Album of the Year at the 2012 Aboriginal Peoples Choice Music Awards.

Saali formed in fall 2012. The band is made up of talented and well known musicians from Montreal.

Over the years, Saalis music has evolved from metal and hard rock, to alternative, and now to the multi-genre sound of Saali and the Ravenhearts. Saalis journey of learning to find his own voice within his music has allowed him to freely write his life out in song. His music carries strength and beauty, often influenced from the peaceful surroundings of the Arctic and Inuit culture.
