"Sabor de Gràcia. La Cançó ventilada"

What do the classical themes of the canço catalana sound like when played as rumba?
The answer can be found in the album that Sabor de Gràcia recorded, which they will present on Wednesday night at the Auditori de Barcelona. La cançó amb rumba pays homage to the nova cançó by means of symbolic period themes combined with the gipsy beats of the Gràcia quarter. Qualsevol nit pot sortir el sol, Homenatge a Teresa, L'Estaca o Paraules d'amorson are some of the pieces that Gràcia arranged.
Sabor de Gràcia. La Cançó ventilada
Sabor de Gràcia’s third album, Cançó amb rumba (Stress Music / K. Industria Cultural, 2006), is made up of many pieces from la Nova Cançó that were then arranged with Catalan Rumba beats. This album will be introduced at the Auditori de Barcelona and in a tour throughout many Catalonian cities.

"Tonight Sabor de Gràcia is presenting the great combination of Cançó & Rumba at the Auditori"

0,7% of the sales of their new record ‘La Cançó amb Rumba’ will be donated to Amnesty International.

Last October Sabor de Gràcia had an overwhelming success at Gràcia’s Fiesta Mayor. The concert that took place on the stage of Plaza del Sol, in which the band played together with the great masters of rumba is a gathering hard to forget. That evening they presented their latest release at the Auditori de Barcelona. (...)
Tonight we will see the performances of many of those who collaborated on the album: the female singer Mónica Green and the Gospel choirs of Morning Singers in the Fields will perform ‘l'Home del Carrer;’ Els Pets will be singing ‘Ningú compren Ningú;’ La Troba Kung-Fu, will play 'Qualsevol Nit pot sortir el Sol;’ Gertrudis will delight us with ‘l´Home Estàtic;’ Txell Sust with ‘Que et sembla Toti;’, José Ortega (Manzanita jr) will perform ‘Venedor d'amor;’ Angelo (Brazilian gipsy) will be making his debut with A Margalida, Toni Xuclà & Quartet de corda with ‘Alenar;’ and Tere Bautista (regular member of the choir of Rosario, Niña Pastori, Malu, Ketama) will be singing in the choirs.
The record ‘La Cançó amb Rumba’ was released by Stress Music. This record pays tribute to the nova cançó which fully respects and keeps the essence of the original songs while adding some of that Catalan Rumba flavour to them.

Bio

Catalan Rumba is a popular music genre with gipsy roots, which arose in Barcelona in the mid 50’s.
The sprout of Catalan Rumba stems from the confluence of two western music traditions: Flamenco and Afro-Cuban tradition. Catalan gipsies synthesized it into a new urban folk style, assimilating the patterns of Afro-Latin music into their Flamenco music tradition. Catalan Rumba pioneers created a peculiar way of playing the guitar that characterizes the genre a guitar venting to the beat of hand claps and bongos. Using this magic formula ‘Sabor de Gràcia’ emerges as the most modern Catalan Rumba, the one that after being Latinized during the last few years, seeks to find the way back home to the origins of that provocative and hedonic mestizo style that made anyone who listened to it get on their feet and dance.
The former Villa de Gràcia is an authentic gipsy quarter. It is precisely there that the authenticity of Catalan Rumba, represented by Sabor de Gràcia, was found. This band of rumberos (rumba musicians) appears as such in Gràcia in 1994, although some of its main members had already collaborated with other bands and leading artists such as Gato Pérez, Les Estrelles de Gràcia, Ai Ai Ai, Chipén, Ramonet, Moncho, Amalgama, Són d´Aquí, Manzanita and many more.
In 1997 their first record, ‘Tots els colors,’ was released. This included a sensitive version of Serrat’s ‘Me’n vaig a peu’ in rumba clef.
Since then they have shared the lineup with Orquesta Platería, Marina Rosell, Joan Manuel Serrat, Los Manolos, Peret, Salif Kelta, Moncho, Chocolate, Lucrecia, Ketama y Tomeu Penya, among many others.
This is a young but experienced band that knows how to establish rapport with a faithful audience that is ready to dance to the rumba beat.
In 2004 a new album was released EL MUNDO BAILA (K-Industria, 2004) an ambitious project aimed at crossing the borders which paved the way for the rumba of the future.
In addition to presenting their own songs, which show a qualitative change in their music, in this album Sabor de Gràcia recalls and plays covers of some of their distinguished predecessors (“Pescaílla”, Gato Pérez, los Chavos.)
The stirring intensity that stems from the contrast between Sicus’ rumba voice and typical Flamenco beats is especially remarkable.
The result are 12 themes in which the duality of the rumba feelings of these musicians blossoms. The Caribbean rhythms and the Flamenco elf merge to embrace a new popular expression, the Catalan Rumba.
In 2006 Sabor de Gràcia’s third and latest record ‘LA CANÇÓ AMB RUMBA’ (Stress Music) was brought out. This album is a tribute to the ‘Nova Cançó,’ it keeps the essence of the symbolic period songs that when combined with gipsy beats result in the distinctive joyful rhythms of the Catalan Rumba.

This band, beyond the shadow of a doubt, is bound to succeed.
Their secret lies in the mixture of gipsies and payos who found in Catalan Rumba their channel of expression, artistic and emotional expression. These are deeply rooted feelings in the long cultural tradition of Gràcia and the gipsy town of Catalonia.
