"Club News"

Zeitlosigkeit und Dub beinhaltet auch Deadbeat and Paul St. Hilaire's „The Infinity Dub Sessions" [blkrtz].

I wanted to create an artifact that felt freshly unearthed.".

The Power & The Glory" [perc trax].

Toll! - Doppelpunkt

"Wild Beasts, Skaters, Sabota, Neil Finn: CD Reviews Feb. 18, 2014"

SABOTA: Sabota (Hybridity Music)
The combined forces of Max Ulis and bandmember Robbie Slade (Humans) are Sabota. The duo’s self-titled debut went through some hoops to get released but it really was worth the wait. Not dance, not pop and comfortable in that place, tracks vary from the glitch-out opener Don’t Ask to the pure lite indie dance pop of Stumble and points in between. What never lags is the appreciation for grooves, typically rendered as minimally as possible. Next Time is one of my fave jams so far this year. Another super solid release from the so far completely right notes all the time Hybridity label.

"In Reality - Sabota"

We have recently witnessed some exciting things happen within the world of Canadian electronic music, and without a shadow of a doubt, one of them has been the success of Sabota. Since their emergence into the local Vancouver music scene a little over a year ago, they have quickly risen to the top, sending their melodic vibrations across the country, down through the States and over to Europe. With the release of their self-titled debut album, the duo, Max Ulis and Robbie Slade, have received nothing but rave reviews from some of today’s leading music magazines, news sources and forerunners of electronic music. Even U.K. dubstep legend Skream was spotted online giving props to Ulis and Slade through the social media grapevine.

Both Ulis and Slade are filled with nothing but gratitude that Sabota EP’s varying ideas, moods and textures have translated and been accepted by a wide listenership. “It’s very exciting and people have been going out of their way to personally tell me they really like it,” reflects Ulis. “It’s definitely had the biggest reaction media wise, on one hand, but also just friends coming up and letting Robbie and I both know that they enjoy it. Everyone seems to have different favourite songs so that’s even more exciting.”

“[However], most exciting [part] of the whole thing for me is getting a double vinyl record into my little paws,” Ulis enthuses about the joys of holding a physical copy of the album itself.

With their recent success, one only wonders what the future holds for the two. When asked about what Sabota are hoping to get out of 2014 and beyond, Ulis states, “Hopefully, lots of shows and touring. We have a pretty exciting live set up now.” As with any new project, there are unexpected trials to be had and obstacles to overcome. Yet Sabota continuously move forward, expanding the structure of their operation in order to make their music more accessible to the masses. “The trick with electronic acts is making it interesting for the audience which can be a challenge. So just expanding our live set and making it more exciting.”

Since Sabota’s development, we’ve been happily grooving to their rhythms both on dancefloors and now, with the release of their successful debut album, in the comfort of our own homes. The best part is, however, it’s still only the beginning. - Freq Mag

- Thump/Vice

"Sabota"

Though distinct in sound, those acquainted with the Hybridity label and their roster, particularly Humans, will find a familiarity in newcomers Sabota and their self-titled debut full-length. Composed of Robbie Slade and Max Ulis, two staples in the Vancouver music scene, Sabota capitalizes on a sound that sees the fusing of Slade's vocals and pop-synth output with Ulis' modest exploration of house.

Sabota revels in atmosphere with Slade's gravel-tinged vocals, while a strong foothold in supple house often diffuses the arching pop momentum an album such as this can easily swing by. First single "Next Time," featuring Charlie Damara, demonstrates the perfect balance the duo achieve, with a percussion-heavy build that halts mid song just as Slade steps in to bridge the rise and fall.

It's almost as if Sabota has taken the breakdowns found in Humans' tracks and filled in the gaps, thickening and lengthening the sound with a douse of grit. With a nod to their prior and current musical endeavors, Sabota are carving a new spot in the West Coast scene.

"Sabota – Sabota (Hybridity Music)"

- Techno Disco

"ELECTRONIC QUARTET FOUR BRAND NEW HUGO TRACKS - Sabota “Stumble”"

Sabota “Stumble”
Starting off with some afro-beat percussion, Vancouver based duo Sabota soon stumbles straight into irresistibly catchy house territory. Despite the fact that they’re from Canada, these two manage to convey the beauty of an eternal summer in their music. This mood is especially thanks to the magnificently dreamy vocals, that are sometimes reminiscent of Metronomy. “Stumble” is taken from Sabota’s self-titled debut album, which was released at the end of February. - HUGO Boss eMag

"10 Vancouver Artists to Get High to"

It’s the afternoon and the struggle is real. You’ve got it all—the blunts, the bitches, the snacks, but something’s missing. Your iPod is as barren and desolate as a dubstep weekly at a college bar, and you start to panic. With only a few minutes left, you turn your browser to THUMP and are rewarded with the perfect playlist to smoke, toke, and lay out to. Here are my top 10 Vancouver artists to get high to:

3. Sabota first popped up on my radar when I saw them open for Nosaj Thing at Venue mid-way through 2013. Since then, they’ve put out several stunning tracks through Hybridity and Scion Sessions that are welcome companions at any evening session. - Vice/Thump

"First Listen - Sabota "Jean""

Next month, Canadian producers Max Ulis and Robbie Slade will release their first collaborative LP as Sabota via Vancouver's Hybridity label. To preview the project, the pair has sent along "Jeans," a brightly introspective house number that accurately reflects the vibe of the street after which the collaboration was named: "Sabota Road... an infamous area in southern Canada where kids sneak out to congregate, smoke weed, and watch the sun come up." In that spirit, "Jeans" tastefully incorporates sunsoaked textures into its run, balancing melodic themes with an energetic bounce that seems fitting of a place utilized for both early-morning reflection and substance-induced decompression. Ulis' and Slade's self-titled debut full-length as Sabota will see a full release on February 21. - XLR8R

"Prefix Premiere: Sabota "Stumble" (Stream)"

From Vancouver, Canada, Sabota are made up of Max Ulis and Robbie Slade. The two full-time music collaborators have been making ethereal goodness inspired by Sabota road in Nelson, British Columbia. Myth states that many of the youth has used the grounds as a place to unleash their youthful dreams and embrace their freedom.

Sabota’s newest track “Stumble” is the perfect track that gives this adventurous journey of growth an audio theme. The duo creates a somber mood that fills the youthful events that go on with a yearning sensation for the horizon to come washing away the previous day. The bumbling synths and beats harmonize together filling your ears with a whimsical wonderment. And lyrically, the duo’s words capture what the youth go through on a day to day basis going through hardships and the friendships that lift them up.

The track will be featured on their forthcoming full-length album.

"Humans' Robbie Slade Teams with Max Ulis for Debut Album as Sabota"

"Sabota – Next Time feat Charlie Damara"

Been listening to a new new track from two guys from Vancouver, (one of them is from a band called Humans, the other is Max Ulis from Max Ulis). One of the best tracks for me this week. This new project is called Sabota and they were nice enough to agree on sharing the new track with you guys. They will enable download for the track on Soundcloud for one week so be quick and grab it while it’s free. It will be released on the new label Hybridity later this spring. - Discobelle

"INTERVIEW: SABOTA & OAKNYC – GET TO KNOW & THE MIX"

Get to know our new friends from Vancouver, Sabota. They will be covering s SXSW for Oak & they also made us a sick mix. Check it out and stay tuned in. below is their interview with Alicia.

Why did you guys decide to start Sabota? What is it adding to your music lives creatively? Give us a lil Robbie and Max history breakdown.
We looked in to eachothers eyes and… actually Max did a remix for my other band and I knew we had to make tunes together. Listen to it here

Describe the Vancouver music scene you are involved in.
Vancouver’s music scene is complex! It’s kind of hard to dance after a certain hour in the ‘no fun city‘ so a lot of different genres and groups of people get lumped into the we-wanna-stay-up-late category. We both like to stay up late and dance! That basically defines the underground scene in Vancouver. Except that Sabota for the most part is the music you listen to when things are winding down…

What are some of your favorite things about sxsw?
Our favorite things about SXSW are also our least favorite things about SXSW — the walking, the beer, the music haha. But seriously — Robbie’s favorite thing about SXSW last year was club called Rhonda & DJ Harvey, East Austin and Matthew Dear’s full live band setup.

Favorite piece of clothing you own?
Max – paper plane necklace from Eugene Choo Vancouver
Robbie – my simple endovanera scoop neck that is now threadbare! But the holes add to the garment. You know something is good when wear makes it even more wearable…

Favorite thing in music in 2013 so far?
Hmm, the year is still young! But almost everything that Turbo Records has put out this year has really tickled our fancy. Also keep an eye on Grenier … the remix he did for us is in the mix.

When is your ep coming out?
We’re going to usher in Fall 2k13

Space, mountains or ocean?
“Space is the place” But we come from the forest

Oysters, bacon or artichokes?
All. Of. The. Above.

In the crowd or on the stage?
Sometimes on the stage and a lot of the time at the back haha. We both like spotlight but more often than not we avoid it when we can.

Drop or skinny?
Both! Denim is skinny /// cotton is drop
Sure denim is coton but you know what we mean. –drop chino–

Night or day?
Beach! so, day. - OAK Blog

"New #YVR Sabota: A Bro Band"

"Max Ulis and Robbie Slade debut as Sabota"

Max Ulis and Humans singer Robbie Slade have teamed up as Sabota.

The Vancouver artists' first collaboration hit at the beginning of the year in the form of "Next Time", which saw Slade singing over one of Ulis' chunky house beats. The latter is a longtime pillar of the Vancouver electronic scene, known for his role in the mid-2000s dubstep boom as well as a more recent move into house and techno. Slade, meanwhile, is vocalist for local synth pop band Humans, who released their first album last year.

After "Next Time" their partnership took off, and the two spent most of the year crafting their full-length, which is self-titled and will be released on Vancouver label Hybridity (also home to Humans) on January 27th. It's a ten-track affair that sees Ulis and Slade exploring the poppier sides of their personalities, and includes additional vocal spots from The Belle Game's Andrea Lo and local singer Chantelle Upshaw.

Listen to the duo's next single, "Stumble," here.

Bio

Sabota Road is an infamous area in Southern Canada, where kids are known to congregate, hang out, and watch the sun come up. Max Ulis and Robbie Slade both have (if somewhat indirect) roots in the area; it was a fitting name for their collaboration.

Since, Ulis and Slade both have full time career's playing music at midnight, Sabota's sounds are more vaguely geared towards the deeper night or sunrise.
