Although the island of Bali is well-known as one of Indonesia's most free-thinking and liberal communities, my high school didn't afford me the channels for expression that I found in the world of imported dance music and local pop. I realized music allowed me to say what I was feeling in ways prose and conversation could never, and I particularly identified with the social messages found in songs by Gombloh, my childhood hero. Gombloh's songs cleverly championed the disenfranchised Indonesian minorities with catchy melodies and humor.
