"Groove Armada's Saint Saviour - Going solo Tonight!"

Groove Armada recently announced the next phase of their career, saying farewell to their full band stage show. It's been a long road, from the early missteps of “I see you baby, shakin' that ass” to their breakthrough album with Richie Havens, up to the present with their last transcendent vocalist, Saint Saviour. Now that Groove Armada have finished their last-ever full band tour, Tom and Andy will have the time to work with Saint Saviour as a solo artist.

Saint Saviour began as Becky Jones, lead singer of an electro band from a few years back called The RGBs. The band shared management with Groove Armada, who took them on tour, and the rest is history.

Her first single debuted earlier this month, and it's a hell of a departure from the pop, electro and dance singles she has previously recorded. “Woman Scorned” is a scathing rock song that has put her high on my list of new artists to watch. The single is out now on iTunes and as a limited 7" vinyl. Here's the video:

It all begins tonight (Oct 23) as Saint Saviour plays her first solo show at Bush Hall in London. If that's anywhere near the place you call home, you can buy tickets for only £8.00 and see history in the making tonight!

Now that you've heard “Woman Scorned”, here's a banging remix to show you what it sounds like when you take Saint Saviour's new style back to her dance/house roots. Plus, I have included Becky's fantastic cover of Depeche Mode's “Enjoy the Silence”.

"GROOVE ARMADA'S SAINT SAVIOUR"

Becky Jones took the summer by storm with her performances
21/10/2010Adrian LarkinSaint Saviour, the current singer for Groove Armada, has been winning the plaudits of many music critics this year, including 6 Music presenter Steve Lamacq and Pet Shop Boys Neil Tennant.

However Saint Saviour, aka Becky Jones, is also a solo artist in her own right, unsigned, but still on the radar of some of Britain's best known indie labels.

Now the singer is on the verge of releasing her first solo single, Woman Scorned is out on the 11 October.

Below you can hear more about her solo work and how she scored a slot with one of the world's biggest dance acts.

"Saint Saviour - WOMAN SCORNED"

Oooh this is really smooth. And it's even nicer to see Saint Saviour, whom we first lauded nearly a year ago to the day when she jumped on board with Groove Armada for the especially spectacular track of theirs, I Won't Kneel. Now that she's taking her distinctive vocals on a solo ride, with single Woman Scorned, it's time to pay closer attention to what makes her Beaston worthy and approved.

Saint Saviour released her first single on October 11 after having spent the last year recording and touring the world with GA, during which Andy Cato described her as "the performer of her generation". Already compared to everyone from Mariah Callas and Antony Hegarty to Karen O and Patti Smith, the singer is writing music that few could reasonably be expected to deliver, but as a former vocal coach and sought after session singer who practiced 10 hours a day at her piano, Saint Saviour is keen to push the limits, both technically and physically.

Woman Scorned covers 3 octaves in its 4 minutes and DUH, I love it. Hear it over at her 'Space, and in the meantime...

...grab the super sultry Evokateur mix of the single. It's a dandy.

Bio

SaintSaviour is a singer, songwriter and performer who takes all three of her jobs very seriously indeed.

As a singer she has, for some time, been one of the most sought after guest and session vocalists in London, recording with Groove Armada, Joe & Will Ask, The Slips and Punks Jump Up this year alone. The versatility of her voice is key to her success, and she has been compared to everything from Maria Callas and Karen O to Kate Bush and Antony Hegarty, a testament to her dedication and rare talent.

As a songwriter she has written dozens of songs in various genres for her full time bands The RGB’s, Groove Armada, Redstar and The Heard (her 50 voice alt choir), with releases on Cooking Vinyl, OM Records, Bacardi Music and Hed Kandi, but it is solo as SaintSaviour that she has really found her voice. Her haunting new-gospel ballads and noir country soul tracks have allowed her to showcase the full range of her abilities as a singer and her power to move people in more ways than one.

As a performer with Groove Armada at the festivals this year she has picked up fans in high places, with Edith Bowman, Neil Tennant, Steve Lamacq, The Quietus and Adrian Larkin all giving high praise to her stage craft and showmanship. Groove Armada’s Andy Cato has even gone as far as to say she is the ‘performer of her generation.’ Once again this is down to hard work, hard rehearsing, years learning her craft with covers bands and hours watching her heroes Patti Smith, David Bowie, Gary Numan, Aretha Franklin and Grace Jones on Youtube.

Despite having released only a single cover and played no gigs, her fanbase has grown from nothing in March this year to 11k friends on Myspace (with 50k plays of her demo songs), 1,500 fans on Facebook and 13k views of her Youtube channel. She also has over 1,000 people on her mailing list.

It is on this bedrock of critical acclaim, hard work and growing online awareness that SaintSaviour released her first single ‘Woman Scorned’ as a limited edition 7” and digital download, via indie label Euphonios Records. This release was accompanied by her first solo headline gig at Bush Hall on October 23rd, which sold out.
