Bio

The Salaka Ensemble was formed in Ghana by Master Drummer Tuza. The name Salaka means "sharing", the aim of the group being to share and preserve the rich musical traditions of Ghana.

Learning traditional African rhythms from Ghana’s top troupes and elders, Salaka quickly grew into a professional and exciting display of culture, dominating any stage with their irrepressible energy.

After performing at hundreds of festivals and special events in Accra, including Ghana's 50th anniversary independence celebrations, and a special performance for President Kufuor. Salaka released an album – ‘Maja’ and has become known as a ‘tour de force’ in their community.

After a sell out 3 month tour of Australia in 2008, Salaka will return for their second tour of Oz in 2009, bringing the roots of West African music to the contemporary stage.

Salaka’s Master Drummers and Dancers provide a vibrant and authentic performance of the highest calibre, which captivates audiences, and transports them to the tribal villages of West Africa. Salaka’s traditional costumes, soaring vocal harmonies and contagious rhythms distinguish the group as a truly unique ensemble.

Tuza is the founder of Salaka. A Master Drummer, Dancer, Singer and Percussionist, he began drumming when he was only 9 years old. Over the years he was disciplined in traditional African drumming and dancing where his love for music developed. A gifted musician Tuza brings incredible power to the stage with his magnetic energy.

Alima is a Master Dancer. She began her studies in traditional music at the age of 12, touring Holland twice with the Ghana Junior All-Stars. She joined Salaka in 2005 and has quickly learned the traditional rhythms of the community as well as sharing her own regions traditions. She brings breathtaking performance ability and incredible stage presence to the ensemble.

Sammy is one of Salaka's original members, he has continued to teach and perform with Salaka for the past 15 years. His strength and expertise in his field, and intimate knowledge of his community traditions are valued greatly in the ensemble. He is a dedicated and extremely powerful soloist, with amazing stamina and attention to detail.

Odai began drumming and singing with the Nungua Apostolic Church when he was a child. As a teenager he joined Salaka becoming one of its founding members, he has dedicated himself to the ensemble for the past 15 years. Odai has also worked with the Abladei Group (now based in the UK), and was featured on their Album Mobo Bi.
