Bio

"Magic Happens" is her motto, and her voice backs it up, every time she opens her mouth to sing. There is an otherworldly quality about Salakida, a multi-talented singer/songwriter/entertainer. When in her presence, you instantly sense that there is more to her than meets the eye. Born and raised in Oakland, CA, she currently claims both L.A. and Atlanta as her second and third homes, where she is quickly building buzz around the album project "Stone Mecca" . Her song -stories are a glimpse into the next new wave to emerge from the underground, a soulful hybrid of R&B, hip hop, alternative and pop that she calls “Blippie Funk“ or Black Hippie Funk. In a market saturated with girl singers, Salakida is a refreshing change, an artist that is equal parts talent, sensuality and uncompromising creativity.
Salakida started showcasing her talent as a vocalist the early age of 5 years old, amazing audiences even to this day who wonder how such a big voice could come out of such a tiny and delicate looking body. Listening to Alanis Morrissette, & Me’shell Ndege O’cello in high school (two female singers who wrote and performed their own songs) inspired her to expand her craft and learn her favorite instrument, the guitar. Most of her songs are biographical, drawn from love stories and other adventures she’s either heard about or lived.
The last few years have been extremely blessed for this rising talent; in 2001 she was selected to perform in Magic Johnson's A Mid-Summer Nights Dream as the first place winner of the Coca Cola True Talent Competition; In 2002 her song "Diversity" was used nation wide for AT&T's diversity training program and web site. In 2003 she was able to add "World Traveler" to her passport profile by traveling to South Africa with hip hop group Blackalicious. With the focus, determination, and natural talent this young lady has, I know we can expect even greater growth in 2004.
