Bio

Salt and Blue is the moniker of Michael Clements, a folk singer and multi instrumentalist based in Fort Collins, Colorado. By cautiously mixing elements of old world Folk music and modern pop songwriting sensibilities, Clements creates a cohesive and unique brand of Americana that is all his own. The lyrical complexity of his songs and the intricate simplicity of the musical compositions combine seamlessly to create a style of musical storytelling rarely found in modern music. Clements is a multi-instrumentalist mainly preferring guitar and singing but also playing piano, bass, banjo, mandolin, drums, and harmonica. He often records and layers each individual part of his songs using multi-track recording in his small home studio. He writes all of his songs on acoustic guitar then develops them further during the recording process, allowing the track to evolve freely as he discovers it.
The name is a reference to the natural elements of the sea and it serves as a metaphor comparing the steady, rhythmic movements of the ocean and the similar characteristics of Clements’ unique brand of Americana Folk music. The title was born from a fascination with the natural rhythms created by the ebb and flow of the ocean and is also in homage to the intimidating and vastly unknown nature shared by both the sea and the relentless pursuit of a passion for music.
Clements began creating music at a young age after his uncle taught him a few chords on his grandfather’s old acoustic guitar. Artists like Bob Dylan, James Taylor, and The Beatles sparked his passion for music when his father would play their albums and sing along on frequent road trips. His musical abilities and songwriting talent developed throughout his school years as he further honed his skills on guitar and taught himself to play other instruments such as piano, drums, bass, mandolin, banjo, and harmonica. He played in several bands of various genres before eventually following his heart by beginning a solo career writing and recording folk music and adopting the title “Salt and Blue”.
