RATING: 4 STARS OUT OF FIVE
How often is Salena Godden, for lack of any better reference, compared to Lily Allen? Probably too many times, and it isn't her fault at all – it is the unimaginative reviewers who rarely pay attention to music that are to blame. A critic hears some reggae or a vocal lilt or a song about a girl drinking and they suddenly tag the sound trademarked to Allen. So let's get this out of the way right now - SaltPeter, despite reggae influences and the occasional vocal lilt (and a lot about drinking) sounds nothing like Lily Allen. If the name is to be used at all (besides the current context) in describing singer Salena Godden it must only be to call Godden Lily's smarter, talented, darker, luxurious, slutty older sister."

"Godden tells it all in bold, beautiful, Bukowskian language, while bandmate Peter Coyte traps her thick, rich voice with incredibly penetrating music in a variety of styles, yet always with panache. There hasn't been this sure a combination since Morrissey and Marr...."

"KERRANG - ALBUM REVIEW"

KERRANG
RATING: THREE K'S OUT OF FIVE
"...This album documents everything The Daily Mail is terrified of, sweet-voiced singer Salena Godden like a smarter, filthier, Lily Allen filled with lust, painting a wincingly unsubtle picture of binge-drinking Britain." - KERRANG

"THE LONDON PAPER - ALBUM REVIEW"

THE LONDON PAPER
RATING: FOUR STARS OUT OF FIVE
NOVEMBER 2007
"Lily Allen has made cheeky lyrics and reggae rhythms fahionable, which is good news for Salena Godden and Peter Coyte, aka Saltpeter, who have crammed both, and more besides onto their brilliantly inventive debut.Highlight Oi Oi Saveloy is beaten with the rhythm stick of Ian Drury to joyous effect...Larky East-End phrasing has never sounded so good". - THE LONDON PAPER

"THE INDEPENDENT - ALBUM REVIEW"

THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY
RATING: OUTSTANDING
"...The Duryesque wordplay is delivered with just the right amount of warmth and throw away cool, and most of the darkly catchy, chorus heavy songs (co-written by band-mate Pater Coyte) could have graced the charts any time during the last 30 years, this is one of this years most promising debuts." - THE INDEPENDENT ON SUNDAY

"WORD - ALBUM REVIEW"

WORD MAGAZINE REVIEW
"There are at least two Salena Godden’s on the London-based poet and singer’s second album with musician Peter Coyte. One exhibits a touching almost painful vulnerability on fragile ballads like Green to Gold, the other gets disproportionately excited about various traditional British foodstuffs (Oi Oi Saveloy) delights in describing veracious sexual encounters (Your Wife) and enjoys rallying her mates for 24-hour benders in the seedier night spots of Soho (Everybody Back To Mine). Both Salenas are equally convincing...Ms Godden has a warm, rich tone to her voice...simultaneously evokes Cassandra Wilson and Ian Dury...So forget the merely cosmetic mockney rhyming of young Miss Allen and try this. Sharp, literate Brit pop for disillusioned romantics and incorrigible sensualists - WORD MAGAZINE

"NUDE - ALBUM REVIEWS"

NUDE MAGAZINE REVIEW
SALTPETER 'HUNGER'S THE BEST SAUCE'

"This is one of the most consumately realised debut albums that i have heard in a long time. It's a flirty, witty, rude and ambitious attempt to capture the highs and lows and 'lovely little aches' of life, love, hard drinking and copious amounts of sex in London town..."

Bio

Combining shared influences of rock, ska, breakbeat, and a passion for film, theatre and poetry there is no way SaltPeter could be anything but a very unusual and very cerebral union.

Receiving praise and support from the likes of LISA STANSFIELD “One of the most inspirational bands of our time” and COLDCUT “This is the most exciting duo this side of Mars”. SaltPeter are now venturing out with the album HUNGER'S THE BEST SAUCE on exciting new label Fred. As the title suggests, the album covers themes of hunger, hunger for sex and excitement, hunger to belong or looking for love in all the wrong places. It is the belly-rumblings of the skint, the scam, and the walk of shame, the morning after the night before and the fear of the night after that....
